i have been taking tri-cor and simvastatin (40mg) for several years. Over the last 8 months i stopped taking the tri-cor because insurance no longer covered it and I decreased my simvastatin to 20mg. At the same time in increased my fiber significantly (metemucil and high fiber cereal daily) and began taking one 1000mg of fish oil each day. Lost a few pounds as well, I'm 41, 5'10" and 173lbs non-smoker.

I am drinking more water but not peeing anymore than normal..dizzy tho.and sometimes short of breath, especially when walking or talking..

There is only one interaction that would be of any concern. Treatment with both simvastatin and niacin may result in muscle pain or tenderness or muscle weakness. Using simvastatin together with niacin is usually not recommended, but may be required in some cases. My HDL levels without Gemfibrozil has been tested at 938and ranges around 800's to 900's. With Gemfibrozil it has been lowered into the high 200's. My LDL levels are always in the 40's, so it is okay. I cannot find anything on the causes or the dilemmas of such seriously high HDL levels and need answers. Can someone explain what, if any, evidence there for a switch from simvastatin to pravastatin? My husband's doctor said there is new evidence that simvastatin may be detrimental. I have been taking simvastatin for three weeks since having a Tia but have also had a flu like cold for ten days , I am still having aching flu like pains which I would have thought would have passed by now . Crestor is an atypical statin in that it raises the HDL by 5-10%, but more importantly decreases through pleomorphic effects the crp level, There is some data that increasing HDL with Niaspan and gemfibrozil in men decreases mortallity if their initial HDL is below 35-40. I would probably start a statin, and see what happens to your ldl and hdl. If the hdl remains low, then I would add gemfibrozil to raise it ( since Niaspan did not work).
