Avatar f tn Patients were put on a cholesterol-lowering diet and given one of the medications. After 18 weeks, patients given simvastatin had significantly lower total cholesterol, lower LDL, lower triglycerides, and higher HDL cholesterol levels than those who took pravastatin. The study found that the patients on simvastatin achieved the target LDL level of less than 130, more than those on pravastatin (65 percent on simvastatin versus 35 percent on pravastatin).
1423357 tn?1511085442 There is no evidence that your cholesterol med Simvastatin [Zocor] raises glucose levels nor does it cause diabetes. Your doctor is correct. Poor diet/nutrition is a major contributor to your high cholesterol, your rising glucose levels and will lead to full blown diabetes. Other contributing factors are being a "bit overweight" and lack of exercise. "..could they point me to an authoritative source that I could direct him to?" Point him to?
Avatar m tn A lot depends on current health status and associated drugs/medicines currently taken as some drugs cause interactions with other drugs which can raise glucose levels. GIYF - Google Is Your Friend - use it to locate specific drug interactions and/or contraindications.
Avatar f tn “If you are unaware that a patient is on simvastatin and you give either boceprevir or telaprevir, the simvastatin level in the blood can go high and patients can develop muscle breakdown,” said Dr. Jensen. http://www.idse.net//ViewArticle.aspx?
Avatar f tn (I was on HCTZ, however, it caused me to have a skin reaction from the sun so my doctor switched me to Spironolactone), Simvastatin 10 mg. and Synthroid 50 mcg. Grandmother had angina; sister has CAD partly due to poor lifestyle (very high triglycerides, poor diet, lack of exercise). My doctor gave me a new sophisticated blood test and based on those results he wants to add 150 mg Lipofen to my regimen.
1273125 tn?1365077526 My cholesterol went down a little to about 215, and my blood glucose began to rise dramatically. Then I tried a statin, a low dose 20mg. daily of Simvastatin. Today, my total cholesterol is around 135, I live on a Paleo diet, and my A1C is 5.7, down from a high of 7.2. I take it without any noticeable side effects. I might be getting "up there", but as you can see by the pictures on my page, I'm pretty active for an old guy. Are statins for everybody? Perhaps not.

Avatar f tn My endocrinologist prescribed me Atorvastatin 40mg in place of the simvastatin but it has since given my major chest pain and muscle weakness in my fingers and legs; so I was advised by the pharmacist to stop that and I have only taken the new statin twice and tonight was the second time taking it. Is simvastatin something that can be eased up to a higher dose to do the exact same thing atorvastatin does for the bad cholesterol?
Avatar f tn Meds are Lotrel 5/20, Spironolactone 25 mg, Synthroid 50 mcg, Simvastatin 20 mg, daily aspirin 81 mg. Family history of diabetes, digestive cancer, CAD. My last lipid test results: Total cholesterol 179, Tri 45, HDL 88, LDL (Direct) 92, LDL-P 926. Last year I cut out starchy foods and simple carbs because my A1c was 5.9, which brought it down to 5.5.
