Common Questions and Answers about Safety equipment in chemistry lab

safety

Avatar f tn Hello, I am a female in my late 20s. I work in a lab with chemicals such as acetonitrile and methanol on a daily basis. I tried avoiding it but I smell them all the time, do you think there will be any short term and long term effects?? Thanks a lot.
427265 tn?1444076436 I am scheduled to have weekly cbc's run each Friday morning before injection night during the first month of tx because of the higher dosing I am doing. I've read that infrequently tx can stress the liver, expecially for those of us with cirrhosis, pushing it from compensated to decompensated quickly in some cases. I am wondering if LFT's should be run as well, or how they would catch something like this in the early stages?
192291 tn?1345400135 I took chemistry while pregnant. I had to wear gloves every day in lab and the instructor said we weren't going to be working on anything I couldn't do. But if you're worried talk to the chem department at your school and find out if your chem labs are different.
Avatar m tn This isn't homework. These are my lab results.
Avatar m tn Hello, First, I will not be able to provide a definitely answer as to whether is is "safe" to work in your lab. As you would know from working in the laboratory environment, there are many potential hazards and laboratories have unique features (potential exposures, ventilation, etc). In general, you should follow the usual practice recommended by the laboratory and material safety data sheets (MSDSs) that are available to you.
Avatar m tn Third, almost all phlebotomy and injection equipment are now manufactured to be a ONE use only item, with safety features that actually render the equipment unable to be used a second time. If you cannot accept this, then get yourself some professional help.
Avatar m tn Minimally, your employer should have provided you with educational materials about bloodborne pathogens which would have provided the information you received from the good folks here. In a lab setting, familiarity with common pathogens, their risk factors, and safety measures will not only prevent lab hazards and error, it will help protect your health and that of your co-workers. Best wishes.
Avatar m tn What safety measures do labs such as LabCorp take in order to prevent mixing blood specimens? Is it possible for such a lab to misplace a sample and then not contact the agency that requested the test?
Avatar m tn The article you reference makes no mention of HIV - that is because HIV cannot be transmitted that way. If you have other questions about the safety of using dental equipment, we suggest visiting the Dental Health forum, as this forum is HIV specific.
Avatar m tn No tattoo artist is going to reuse a needle on you. Believe me. They have been trained on safety precautions. They can't be an artist without passing tests and courses- these include bloodborne pathogen safety protocols. No one reused a needle on you. This can't even happen by accident. No one is going to leave a used needle laying around, pick it up, then use it on the next customer. This DOES NOT happen. Doing something like this places the artist at way more risk than the customer.
Avatar n tn Power-generating equipment, arc welding equipment and powerful magnets (as in medical devices, heavy equipment or motors) can inhibit pulse generators. Patients who work with or near such equipment should know that their pacemakers may not work properly in those conditions. Cellphonelphones available in the United States (less than 3 watts) don't seem to damage pulse generators or affect how the pacemaker works.
Avatar m tn the question is whether we can rely on labs or we should be checking equipment manufacturer and quality as it is not required in devloped world. People who never been to africa may think that there are no chances of sub standard processes but being here we know the facts. We have John Hopkins Hospital Here ..shall I go for ELISA test there?
572651 tn?1530999357 If you saw my email inbox you might be surprised at some of the mail I receive. I have signed up on distribution lists for many medical sites, including Nursing Times from the UK. I received an announcement today about an upcoming convention in LONDON, that may be of interest to some of you. This convention/conference is September 29-30 and the registration is FREE. I wish I could go, but its a bit far to commute. Some of you who live in the UK may be interested, though.
Avatar m tn m sure I had something that resembled gonorrhea (burned when I peed - discharge, and antibiotics got rid of it) and neither of them had symptoms or positive test results. However, I work for a company that builds lab equipment that tests for both strep and gonorrhea and a week or two before I showed symptoms a machine was returned from a lab that may not have been decontaminated. So, is it possible I acquired it through that? Or that I had something else and had a FP result?
Avatar f tn I am so scared:) I was at a discount store and poked my hand with a safety pin that was taken apart, basically mangled. It looked like somebody had twisted it. It was on top of a clothing rack. It drew blood on me. The store had just opened and I am wondering if someone had purposely placed it there. Can I get hiv fro it and if not can you explain why? Thank you I am so scared!!!!
Avatar m tn I am a college student and I recently was conducting some chemistry work in a lab with wastewater from a sewage/wastewater treatment plant. We were advised to wear gloves throughout the whole process, but I stupidely chose to handle some of the wastewater without gloves, and spilled some on my hand, perhaps more than once.
Avatar f tn I spoke with my specialist (the old one, dec 5th I meet with new one) briefly on the phone today and asked her when and what the lab tests r. She told me the viral load is Wk 4, 12 and then at the end if I'm UND at week 12. If I'm detected at all at wk 12 the treatment stops. She said I get my CBC every 2 weeks for the first 2mos and then monthly after that. This all doesn't seem right.
Avatar n tn m a 28 yr old female, and have had pains in my legs for almost 10 years now. The pain is a constant ache which has gotten progressively worse over the last few years in particular, and is no pretty unbearable, and makes it impossible for me to concentrate or do work. It is worse in my lower legs and around me knees. When they started off they were infrequent and I thought I had restless leg syndrome.
Avatar m tn Not all facilities are equipped with this technology and not all physicians have been trained to use it, and it is not appropriate in all patients in all cases, but the preliminary study results show that this type of equipment not only cuts radiation exposure, but (in the right hands used on the right patients) may reduce other risk factors associated with EP studies and ablation as well.
Avatar n tn A lot depends on what tests were done and if they had to send the blood work to a lab in another part of the country to be analyzed. I do know that my viral load test results take a little less than 1 week to get back because they have to send the blood to some other place, but simple tests like surface antigen can be done in my regular doctors office and the results are ready the same day.
475300 tn?1312423126 s a tiny cup , and as I fill it from the squeeze bottle of ink, the tip comes in contact with the residual ink in the cup, and in that split second everything that's in your blood gets sucked back into the tip of the ink bottle. If you have the HepC virus in your system, the next person to be tattooed will, too. And the next, and the next...well, you get it. Even the cleanest shop can be a Typhoid Mary for HepC. Now think of all the tattoo shops in the U.S.
Avatar m tn Hi, some days ago i tested negative for hiv by Ab and Ag methods 15 weeks after possible exposure. I was really panicked at the moment of testing and cannot remember a lot, but Before drawing my blood, the nurse asked me to clench my fist, then touched my arm to find the vein, BUT: When the nurse was drawing my blood i preferred not to look, so i remember that i only felt a very very slight and short time needle pain in my arm.
Avatar m tn "So wire swab and small blade with the infected fluid is not infectious when exposed to air?" This assumes that the doctor's office didn't sterilize it. Get real; that's an irrational assumption. But I already said that even if they didn't, there would be no risk. I haven't changed my mind in the past coupel of yours. "Can i get on with my life and get married?" Of course you can, as related to any potential risks in the doctor's office.
