my son, 9 , was taking risperidone 1mg BID. he has missed his doses for 2 days and now came home from summercamp with signs of tardive dyskinesia. Is this because of stopping the risperidone or has the risperidone been masking the tardive dyskinesia ?
She also gets up at night and looks for things or wanders around. The consultant has prescribed risperidone, although we were hoping for Aricept. I am very concerned about this as internet research suggests it is for aggressive behaviour and will result in oversedation even drooling. I don't want my mum to be a zombie - I'd just like her to be more like her old self. Does anyone have any experience of this drug at all? I'm not going to give it to her until I learn more.
My four year old grandchild/fosterchild has been to the doctor and now take meds for ADHD. Frist was riddelen that did not work at all. New medication is Risperidone. No change has been noticed. This child before meds was pooping and peeing on her bedroom floor and even after meds. Im at my end and dont understand this kind of behavior.
My Pdoc had suggested an extremely slow tapering of risperidone over 10-12 weeks but I tapered it over 6 weeks and only had minimal withdrawl symptoms.I am yet to go and see him.I am stable on tegretol 1000 mg with no side effects.Hope it stays good.
While yes, weight gain appears to lesser of the problems she is facing, I cannot suggest whether going back to the drug risperidone will help or not. What I can suggest is that in cases with ADHD, explosive disorders and autism it is often helpful to seek therapy. Along with drugs individual therapy often helps deal with thoughts and emotions. I suggest you talk to your daughter's doctor and find out other options available. Take care!
Take him to his doctor and stay on the Risperidal-risperidone. Have him tested for diabetes. The sugar craving is also from risperidone-other people on antipschotics report the same things. You might try joining a support group, such as NAMI.org, for the families of mentally ill.

I am writing for answers for my 15 Year old son with Autism. He has been on Risperdal for about 5 years now and was taking 4mg x 2 daily, HIGH, I KNOW. He is 5'10" 165 lbs. For about the past 6 months he has started with some new behaviors. I relayed these to his Psychiatrist and she has had no comment on them. I researched them myself and found they mimic Tardive dyskinesia in many ways. I have found a new Psychiatrist but can not get in to see her for approx 2 more weeks.
Risperdal (the brand name for risperidone) is not a veterinary drug, however studies have been done on Beagles for the drug. Overdose symptoms include lethargy, weakness, muscle tremors, ataxia and seizures. It is too late at this point to induce vomiting, so if you absolutely will not take him to a vet, you need to watch him closely for any of the symptoms I listed above. If you see them, you need to not eat for a week if necessary, but you MUST take him to a vet or you will lose him.
he has had all of the classic signs of toxicity from this drug. he was treated in our local ER (2 days later) with benedryl and adavan and he seemed fine following the treatment. but the dystonic reactions, disorganized thinking, anxiety, all symptoms continue. it's the weekend, i can't get a doctor to call me back, he has never had any other treatment prior to this and I am scared. please help. i want my son back!!! how long does it take to get this drug out of his system?
i wasnt sure where to post this message, my brother died with a inquest of open verdict he was 37 he was taking risperidone for 3 yrs and diphenhydramine, he had high blood pressure although an ECG has never been done, he was over weight, tinnitus and was diagnosed with delusional disorder and schizophrenia. because he was'nt found until the 7th day of death post mortem was difficult no blood samples could be taken and eyes and brain had liquified..
Doctor tried to up the dosage for Solian, it made me feel constricted again like the Risperidone and doctor suggested I try Risperidone again. This time, the same dosage as the last year, 2 mg Risperidone, made me feel okay and I began a new period, with a new job...I was also switched on Prozac(fluoxetine) 20mg and it worked fine for a while. I did a stupid thing, took 5 pills of Prozac because I was bored, wanted to use them sort of as drugs and I ended up hospitalized again...
I must disagree with the other poster. Risperdal was approved by the FDA for use in children on the spectrum in 2006 to treat *repeated* bouts of aggression and irritability as are other anti-psychotics. My son was diagnosed with Asperger's when he was 3 and has been taking Risperidone (Risperdal) for 4 years in varying dosages. Without it he could not have attended mainstream schooling as his aggressive outbursts were a danger to himself, other children and adults.
I made a mistake and put myself on Risperidone. 0.5g for 3 weeks and I ended up having an allergic reaction that made me discontinue the drug. I have been off it for 3 days now, but I am experiencing severe insomnia and I cannot feel tiredness or happiness. I didn't taper myself off it, because my throat was swelling up to the point I couldn't eat at all. I would love for someone to offer me a little support, as I'm now scared of dying this way.

In the past eight months i have developed about 30 new (what appear to be) melanocytic nevi. These new lesions coincided with the discontinuation of the anti physcotic drug risperidone after four years use. I have seen two different dermotolgists and had a total of four biopsies since february of this year. They have come back as a compund nevus, a junctional nevus, seborriac keratoses and an irritated nevus.
We just got my stepson for the summer and most of the fall and his mother has him on .5mg of risperidone twice daily. she says he has crazy outbursts and sensitory issues but any time we have had him even before the start of the medication there was never a problem. It seems his behavior is only when he is with his mother.
The Sizodon is Risperidone used for mood disorders and the clonil is for OCD. Did you google the side effects of each drug? Did the doc say why he/she was putting you on Sizodon and clonil together?
He gave me risperidone and benztropine.. Now my questions is is my problem from all of my drug and alcohol problems that im haveing such a hard time with the paranoia or is the adderal.. Or is it the fact that im an addict and im wanting to find something that gives the same feelings of the drugs and alcohol??
She has been on risperidone for many years. Recently we have tried other drugs and her symptoms of aggression have increased. She is currently on Strattera, serequel, and hydroxizine (to help her sleep). She has only been on the serequel 2 days and it is not helping. The risperidone was stopped immediately because of weight gain. I need some suggestions on what we can do. HELP!
I am on a tapering from Risperidone and am currently at 0.5 mg per day and have 6 days left to stop it on advice of my Psychiatrist but I am finding the withdrawal syndrome extremely difficult and am experiencing lots of anxiety.I would want to know if anyone has experienced similar withdrawal syndrome from Risperidone or similar such anti psychotics and about how long could this withdrawal syndrome last after stopping this medicine as I am very distressed with this anxiety.
How do you manage withstand side effects of both Risperidone and Seroquel.I found even 1mg of Risperidone made me edgy,nervous and anxious.My hypomanic episode resolved in July and my Pdoc was a month late in tapering Risperidone.He started tapering process in September.In future I shall keep far away from these antipsychotics as possible.A most distasteful experience.
