Risperidone for adhd children

Common Questions and Answers about Risperidone for adhd children

risperdal

Avatar f tn First, I can find no indication that risperdal is indicated for ADHD. " In 2006, the FDA approved risperidone for the treatment of irritability in children and adolescents with autism.[6] The FDA's decision was based in part on a study of autistic people with severe and enduring problems of violent meltdowns, aggression, and self-injury; risperidone is not recommended for autistic people with mild aggression and explosive behavior without an enduring pattern.

Avatar f tn She has been on risperidone for many years. Recently we have tried other drugs and her symptoms of aggression have increased. She is currently on Strattera, serequel, and hydroxizine (to help her sleep). She has only been on the serequel 2 days and it is not helping. The risperidone was stopped immediately because of weight gain. I need some suggestions on what we can do. HELP!
Avatar f tn The standard for any child with ADHD is a very regulated schedule and I think that this should also go for bathroom visits. By the way, I am also the CL on the ADHD forum - http://www.medhelp.org/forums/ADD---ADHD/show/175 feel free to post any questions there too. In term of this tantrums, etc. You might want to check out the book, called "Raising Lions", by Joe Newman. If you go to his web site and subscribe to his newsletter you can get $3.00 off the book.
Avatar f tn She was on risperidone for many years but stopped abruptly for weight gain?? Hm. Well if that class of antipsychotic medication worked to control her symptoms, there are others in the class. I'd try that. And weight gain---- well, in the area of managing a difficult patient's symptoms, most physicians look at benefits verses cons. If the benefits are greater often a medication is continued even if it has an unwanted side effect.
Avatar n tn what are withdrawl effects on children age 9year old female coming off risperidone? dosages was 0.5mg of rispiradone in the morning with 72 mg of concerta for ADHD. AND A 0.

573297 tn?1304709140 Yeah, his present psychiatrist keeps saying he still needs to take his ADHD meds....All the ADHD meds have had this effect on him though! That is why they gave him rx for risperidone. Last night he was SO off!!! I was really worried about him and kept waking up in the night with these urges to go check on him for fear of the worst. He was fine and hopefully will have a better day today.

713780 tn?1229724775 m sorry maybe i should have clarified a bit better My son goes to a special needs school there is doctor- psychiatrist-psychologist-and a nurse due to my son high anxiety level he is unable to attend a regular elementary school due to the fact that my son is unable to function in heavy populated environment also due to his adhd and mood disorder it could be disruptive at times he also has vocal tics and we all know how cruel other children could be so this school is a more appropriate setting fo
Avatar f tn While I'm not a big advocate for medicating children, sometimes it is necessary for some of the toughest cases. However, I do agree that you may want to get a second opinion in regards to what to do with your child. Have you tried food changes? Vitamins like Omega 3, I take the chewable ones from Costco. Or liquid vitamins that you can mix with juice? Look into the gluten/wheat/yeast free diets as well.
Avatar m tn Since then we found out that Risperidone is know for side effects such as tardive dyskinesia. We are seriously concerned now. Will this be permanent ? What is the best way to examine this problem ? Thanks for any suggestions !
1554218 tn?1295646775 I also read that Resperidone (an anti-psychotic medication) is used for ADHD and pediatric schizophrenia. Co-incidentally, children who suffer from "no pain" often suffer from schizophrenia. Not to scare you - but I think I would address these questions to your family doctor/psychologist/psychiatrist. ODD is a very serious diagnosis and often is used by the mental health field to "cover" areas where the suspected diagnosis cannot be given until the person is an adult.
Avatar m tn I am NOT at all a fan of giving young children heavy duty psych meds. Actually, treating children for psych disorders is TRICKY tricky business. The assessment process is very very difficult and often leads to misdiagnosis. It's very hard to assess a young child who hasn't grown, matured and even really begun learning. There are many doctors who won't really even acknowledge the validity of a child psych diagnosis, because of the above reasons I mentioned.
2067929 tn?1331241754 Hello. My 7 year old son has been diagnosed with ADHD and possibly PDD or Aspergers. We are currently managing him on Concerta, methylphenidate (short acting), risperidone and Prozac. There's a very fine balance and if they are not in synch we see behavior issues. Now, at school he's great because he's in a program that's more like a boot camp but he's done SO well since being put in it. But....at afterschool program we see hitting and kicking etc.
Avatar f tn The problem with really intelligent kids is that they problem solve so fast. And the problem with 4 year olds is that they don't have alot of self control. Put it together and ya - you've got problems. Throw the possibility of ADHD into the mix and everything gets a lot worse. I really don't know if he has ADHD. How long ago did the doctors see him and what kind of a doctor saw him?
Avatar m tn I then got hospitalised for aggression. I was on the drug Risperidone(Risperdal) for two months and also on Zuclopentixol (Clopixol) injections. And I developed social anxiety, poor attention and zero social skills. After getting off the clinic, I self medicated to Risperidone(Risperdal), Clonazepam (Rivotril) and Mirtazapine (Remeron) at recommended dosage (And Zuclopentixol (Clopixol) injection) and feel good, and developed social skills, and social anxiety is less.
1447814 tn?1284735457 Your son is in an early developmental stage. He is too young for such a diagnosis and Vyvanse is a dangerous drug (look on the ADD/ADHD forum for horrifying info). Find another doctor, or sit back and wait for your child to grow up .Get him involved in anything that requires a lot of activity. Does he have a bicycle? Or a tricycle? He needs to be active. And try to get cooperation and help from the school, instead of criticism. Also look to your own parenting.
1689981 tn?1305843987 Risperidone is used to treat schizophrenia (including adolescent schizophrenia). Neither of these are approved for 4 year old children. What kind of a doctor prescribed this? The second question is what did you do after the diagnosis - not taking the recommended meds was a great idea - but did the doctor give you ( or did you research) any information on ADHD?
Avatar n tn I must disagree with the other poster. Risperdal was approved by the FDA for use in children on the spectrum in 2006 to treat *repeated* bouts of aggression and irritability as are other anti-psychotics. My son was diagnosed with Asperger's when he was 3 and has been taking Risperidone (Risperdal) for 4 years in varying dosages. Without it he could not have attended mainstream schooling as his aggressive outbursts were a danger to himself, other children and adults.
597354 tn?1227197932 The doctor was very concerned then about my grandson who is almost 5 and said we need to keep an eye on him. He has been diagnosed already with ADHD and is on meds for it (i hate that). My question is - do children have thyroid problems that young or is it usually later in life? It may sound like a stupid question to some people but I really don't know and I haven't had time to research it. I didn't really even consider that he could have a problem at such a young age.
Avatar f tn I know there are behavioral treatments for children, so there must be ones for adults. See what you can find on the internet.
Avatar f tn The duration and intensity of physical outbursts and temper tantrums differs in the two disorders. Children who are ADHD usually calm down in twenty to thirty minutes, whereas children who are bipolar may continue to feel and act angry for up to four hours. 3. The degree of “regression” during angry episodes is typically more severe for children who are bipolar.
