Has your son been over to Iraq or Afghanistan? Stress and anxiety are very prevelent in the services today, and if he was perscribed Prozac, I would say trust the doctors. I came back from my second deployment and was put on a different SSRI like Prozac, but I believe the most important thing is that he is seeing a therapist. This combination for me really helped me.

Hi I was put on prozac in mach the dr at that time played so much with my doses i was all over the place ,same way with adderall i was put on it for refractory depression,it was to give me energy LOL I have no energy..got a new dr in may cause old one retired he had me try to up prozac and trouble with that so his asso.
Hello Christine, I read in your post that you "found out" prozac can cause lack of sex drive and weight gain. I didn't hear you mention that you were now actually experiencing lack of sex drive and weight gain.
Did you find out, or are you actually having these side effects right now from the Prozac?

You have a valid concern. Please take a moment to read some of Dr. Peter Breggin's work - just google him. He's a highly respected psychiatrist who is also an advocate for children. Certainly, slow growth could be your concern, but there are far more serious potential adverse effects that can occur. I'm sure you are aware of the newer labeling changes that the FDA has required regarding the usage of SSRI's on children under eighteen.
re feeling is withdrawal, a return of what drove you to be on meds in the first place, or side effects of the new drug. Prozac is sometimes used at low dosage at the end of a difficult taper off a med to get you off the old med and onto Prozac because Prozac stays in the body longer than other SSRIs and is for that reason thought to have fewer withdrawal problems.
Are you prescribed Zantac? Or, are you talking about the OTC preparation? Zantac is a very safe medication, it probably wouldn't be an issue for you to try it...run it by your doc first.
These meds can cause all kinds of GI Upset, so it could very well be the Prozac. Have you ever been diagnosed with GERD? Have you ever just tried taking a few Tums? That may work also. Tums can be very effective, and they are completely safe.
Make sure you are taking the Prozac as prescribed.
Usually when Psychiatrist refer to "maximum dose" they are refering to the maximum effective dose at which any more of the drug is simply never going to produce further theriputic results.
I know it sound as if it means "max dose" as in "that's the most you can take before the danger level" but that's not usually the case.
For example if the maximum effective dose of Effexor is shown to be 350Mgs a day.
I had to stop taking the strattera because it gave me the hot flashes.I stopped Strattera in Feb of 07. In November of 2008, I tapered off Prozac. I was ok for about 9 months. Then, in August of 09, I started having anxiety issues.. Not really mental anxiety, but physical anxiety.. My insides felt like they were running on overdrive, kind of like an engine at high idle. So in October of 08, I went back on Prozac (10mg) About 1 week into treatment, I started having chest pain..
Its not the Wellbutrin, it's probably the Prozac.
I completely understand. I also was addicted to hydrocodone. And, when I went through the withdrawals I was extremely depressed for a long time. I am finally on the other side of the depression. It took quite awhile for me. Just hang in there - I promise it will get better and so whatever you do do NOT give up! I have so much more energy now, feel human and have a clear head to boot! I'm happy for the first time in a long time! I know it will seem like forever.
After heaps of research I found that prozac increases cortisol levels initially in the body and then I found out that fish oil blunts the effect of cortisol in the body and by golly I use the two together THANK GOODNESS it works beautifully- I feel awake, alert and energetic from the prozac but am calm and anxiety free from the fish oil- ALSO have done this for 2 days in a row and slept for the first time ALL the way through the night with no drugs for the first time in 7 weeks.
Paxil is really hard to stop taking, so the theory is that if you can get the person hooked on Prozac doing similar things to serotonin that Paxil was doing the withdrawal will be controlled. Because Prozac stays in the body much longer than any other ssri (about a month compared to a matter of hours) there are far fewer complaints about withdrawal with Prozac than other ssris or snris.
My dr didnt send me for no blood work because when he told me about the water in the kidney he also asked me if i wanted to get blood work done to see if my baby had downsyndrome and told him no. God is sending me my baby the way he feels is right. So like i said when i went 7 weeks later my baby was fine.
