I could eat a plate of pasta, such as a casserole, and if there is 1 ounce of tuna in the dish, my urine will smell of tuna for the next couple of hours. No big deal. Also, I'm male so it's not my vagina or a UTI. It's just tuna. You are what you eat. A.H.

My 88 year old father has a very very strong ammonia smell to his urine. We know he has kidney stone (that can't be remove due to health issues). I hate to take him to the doctor's for nothing, but could this be an infection?

I can smell it on his jowls, the top of his head/neck, and comng from his mouth. Urinary bladder infection and kidney infections do produce strong smelling urine. Another reason is dehydration. Strong ammonia smell is due to protein breakdown. A routine urine examination along with a urine culture will be able to detect the problem. Drink plenty of fluids and water and see if that helps. Also if you are on crash diets etc then protein breakdown can cause an ammonia smell. Also diet rich in protein can be the cause.

The smell of your urine doesnt have to do with the pregnancy . If your urine smells like that you should get it checked out it might be an infection.

Usually when urine is smelly, apart from obvious foods, it is due to lack of water intake or a bacterial infection. I suspect it is the lack of water intake. Up your fluid intake, not just coffee! You should smell a change in few days. If it continues, go see a doctor.

I drank more liquids and the smell went away. Its usually first morning urine that smells bad.... We are snowed in, so going to the doctor is kind of an issue right now.
