On 3d catherization in 9 years, 2 stents placed end to end in LAD. Placed on 10mg Effient; after 5 weeks changed over to 75 mg Plavix (also take 30 mg Isosorbide monitrate along w/0.81 mg aspirin. For first 4+ weeks heaviness in chest w/periodic angina. Notice with excitement or now-a propensity to become angrier easier, have chest pains for awhile. I have always been very healthy and full of energy-that is, until this year.
I am on Plavix for my Heart Attack and my husband is on Coumadin for a blood clot he had 3 years ago 1 month after he had broken his ankle and had to have surgery. I say he should be off the Coumadin already. He went back to work full time after the broken ankle and also lost 60 lbs. He says the Plavix is just as bad.
If you are referring to Plavix (clopidogrel) and Aspirin, I would take them for life. The general rule used to be aspirin for life, plavix for a year. However, more and more cases of forming clots in stents were appearing when plavix was stopped, so now the general trend is changing towards life.
My mother is 91 years old. The doctor told her she has an enlarged heart, and was bleeding both inside and outside. Just what does that mean? I've never heard that before.
She takes plavix, which the doctor had her discontinue use.
Is this a common thing?
My husband had his first heart attack in November 2006 and took plavix for one year. At that time the doctor took him off plavix and then just four short months later he suffered another heart attack with much heart damage. We questioned this as he had placed two stents at the time of his first heart attack, but he said the new thinking was to stop the plavix after one year. He did no further testing or anything.

I hope I can shed some light on this for you from my personal experience, it was a concern of mine as well. I'm also 67 years old but try to stay young physically and mentally. When I started getting blockages, they came regular intervals over a three year period, and have eight of them, along with several heart attacks. As a result, I took Plavix for four years, along with 81mg of aspirin.
My husband had his first heart attack at age 49. He had 4 stents put in. He was on Plavix for a year - then his cardio took him off. 5 months later he had another heart attack. He is doing fine, but they are now telling us that he will probably be on Plavix for the rest of this life. That is fine with us - I would hate to worry about another clot forming. All of his stents are the medicated ones.
Some doctors recommend plavix for a lifetime if one has had a heart attack, and about a year after DES. DES sites may be vulnerable to blood clots, and stats show there is little risk after a year for clots. I discontinued plavix after 13 months about 5 years ago subsequent to DES implant
Prior to an intervention such as colonscopy, there may be a period of 6 days without the medication to prevent the risk of uncontrolled bleeding in the event of polyp removal.
Taking Plavix alone after a heart attack offers small but significant extra protection from cardiovascular problems compared with aspirin. If an individual has had a heart attack two or three years ago, and if everything is fine, one probably doesn't need this medication.....also up to about 1 year with DES implant then discontinue.

Severe joint and back pain usually is not a side effect of Plavix. Coumadin is more powerful than Plavix. The Plavix is important to take especially if you have coated stents. You may want to be checked for arthritis that may be flaring up. Coumadin is not to be used in persons with high cholesterol.
The circulation is from your heart medication and heart medication makes you tired. You need the heart medication and Plavix and it would be risking to stop the Plavix. Lipitor is good for studies have shown that it has helped reduce cholesterol buildup in the arteries. The studies showed that 40mg was just as good as 80mg and that 80mg did not help reduce the cholesterol buildup any more than the 40mg. One question I have, is the nitro patch. Are you having chest pains?
I had a second cath to look at my heart because of the chest pain and the heart was said to be fine. Having a hard time sleeping at night and anxiety is building because of the pain. Anyone else have these issues? Also, is there a blood test that can be given to see if the Plavix even works for my gene make-up?
Did you have a heart attack in 07 or how did you happen to get on 2 plavix a day? Did your doctor determine that you risk was so high that he wanted you on Plavix long term, these are the only circumstances that using Plavix long term would be.
My cardiologist would not let my dentist allow me to stop taking Plavix for even 5 days to alleviate my pain due to a cavity .The dentist is bent upon my discontinuing Plavix to enable filling of the cavity or do root canal to solve the problem.
