Common Questions and Answers about Plavix and heart attacks

plavix

Avatar m tn I have both DES and drug eluting stents and have had heart attacks, and took Plavix for several years. About a year ago I went off Plavix and have not experienced a heart attack or restinosis. I remain on 81mg aspirin. While still taking Plavix, I had the misfortune of developing a bowel obstruction which required emergency surgery. The fact that I was was taking Plavix was a major concern, and the surgery took place expecting bleeding problems.
Avatar n tn Some doctors recommend 6 months to a year on Plavix and some recommend for life. Plavix will help to avoid having heart attacks and strokes. The blood in your mouth is most likely because of the Plavix along with the bruising. It is the side effects. The circulation is from your heart medication and heart medication makes you tired. You need the heart medication and Plavix and it would be risking to stop the Plavix.
Avatar n tn I hope I can shed some light on this for you from my personal experience, it was a concern of mine as well. I'm also 67 years old but try to stay young physically and mentally. When I started getting blockages, they came regular intervals over a three year period, and have eight of them, along with several heart attacks. As a result, I took Plavix for four years, along with 81mg of aspirin.
Avatar n tn I recently got off plavix, (2 1/2) weeks ago and yesterday I experienced severe chest pain, so severe I screamed several times. The pain started on the right side of my chest when I had bent over and then I had to sit down because the pain continued. The pain then shifted over to the left side and all throughout my chest. I called my cardiologist and he told me to go to the hospital, which I did. They evaluated me over night and only did some blood tests.

739632 tn?1454261272 I'm very worried about my stepfather. He's had two heart attacks within two years.... the last one was about 1 1/2 years ago. He's 52 and VERY unhealthy, in fact , I feel hes close to death. He took his plavix very shortly after the 2nd heart attack, but stopped. He got stints put in the last time. He is about 100 lbs overweight, he sleeps at least 16 hours a day (not kidding), he smokes a pack a day, and eats anything he wants...fast food, anything!
255163 tn?1376869746 My heart Dr will not let me go off the plavix and my surgeon will not do the surgery while on plavix. What happens in a situation like this?. I am between a rock and a hard place. If neither Dr gives in what do I do? If I have an attack and end up in the ER wouldn't they have to do emergency sugery?. Does this mean that anyone on plavix can never have surgery unless it's an ermergency. What is your opinion on going off plavix temporarily for surgery. I would welcome anyones advice.
Avatar f tn my mother was asked to stop taking plavix by her cardiologist and since then has had severe headaches and increased blood pressure. She is already taking 2 blood pressure medications to control blood pressure, micardis and nifedipine xl. Do you think her increased bp is due to her coming off of plavix? She does have a pace maker and stints.

Avatar n tn Until your doctor prescribes you something different to treat this, you should not discontinue use of this as this affects one of your most important organs. Aspirin is used for long term prevention of heart attacks, and is not intended for doing what Plavix does. Book an appointment with your doctor or surgeon and tell them that you are experiencing symptoms.
Avatar n tn I had angioplasty in 2001 and had a stent implant. My cardiologist prescribed Plavix and 81 mg aspirin daily among the other medications (beta blocker, ACE inhibitor, statin). I have recently moved to a new city and have not found a new cardiologist yet but family physician suggested that Plavix could be discontinued as the guidelines have changed and no long recommended after 12 months post stent implant. Suggestions please?
Avatar n tn After several heart attacks and cardiac caths, I would prefer dealing with any potential side effects. Yet, if they were too bothersome, I would discuss them with my cardiologists. There are several treatment options available. Yet, all will have the potential for some side effects. I wish you well!

Avatar m tn The mixture of Metroprolol, Ezitrol, Lipitor, Ramipril, Isordil, Plavix, Nexium and Aspro and now Coralan leaves me feeling quite week and lathargic and always very tired. My BP is steady at around 100/60, my cholesterol is below 4. I did used to walk about 2km a day before I started Coralan even though I got angina, but now I feel I just dont have the energy to do the walk to see if I still get angina. Not sure what yer answer might be but thought Id write this down anyway.
214864 tn?1229715239 My GI doctor JUST called and said that he did not think that I should have the gallbladder surgery, even though my HIDA scan showed my GB ejection fraction to be only 10%. This is the "gold standard" for determining the function or lack of, the GB. He said, believe it or not, that I should not have to stop Plavix for that long; that my symptoms were not typical of GB disease, and that he has seen low EF's and no disease, high ef's and much GB disease.
Avatar f tn I am on Plavix for my Heart Attack and my husband is on Coumadin for a blood clot he had 3 years ago 1 month after he had broken his ankle and had to have surgery. I say he should be off the Coumadin already. He went back to work full time after the broken ankle and also lost 60 lbs. He says the Plavix is just as bad.
Avatar n tn On 3d catherization in 9 years, 2 stents placed end to end in LAD. Placed on 10mg Effient; after 5 weeks changed over to 75 mg Plavix (also take 30 mg Isosorbide monitrate along w/0.81 mg aspirin. For first 4+ weeks heaviness in chest w/periodic angina. Notice with excitement or now-a propensity to become angrier easier, have chest pains for awhile. I have always been very healthy and full of energy-that is, until this year.
Avatar m tn I have a problem with thin skin that will tear easily, my cholesterol is under control and he suggests I simply eat salmon at least once a week, easy to to where I live. Both Plavix and fish oil have been withdrawn. I try and eat salmon I catch or wild, troll-caught salmon, and avoid farm-raised salmon.
Avatar n tn I have read so often that you should not take Plavix and aspirin, but it seems to also be common to prescribe both plavix and aspirin in certain situations. I am worried and confused. Thanks.
Avatar n tn Husband quit taking plavix now he may be in trouble. On October 28Th,2007, my husband at the age of 54 had a heart attack, He had mentioned that he was overheated due to mowing the lawn however I noticed that he did not look hot at all. He was real pale. He jumped in the shower. I went and checked on him and asked him I thought you were going to take a shower? He said I did. I felt his pulse and just the feel of his skin I knew he was in trouble so I brought him two aspirins and said take these.
Avatar n tn If you are referring to Plavix (clopidogrel) and Aspirin, I would take them for life. The general rule used to be aspirin for life, plavix for a year. However, more and more cases of forming clots in stents were appearing when plavix was stopped, so now the general trend is changing towards life.
Avatar n tn The American Dental Association has agreed with the American Heart Association and the AMA, that there are no dental procedures that require the patient to stop Plavix. I read this yesterday, and the article mentioned that much to their dismay, cardiologist were still hearing from their patients that some nutty dentists were still asking them to stop Plavix for a procedure.
