I mean, I know Oxycontin is slow release, but percocet is Oxycodone and how is that different from the Oxycontin? I thought they were the same only, one was slow release and one was not, but there must be another difference... Right?

She was suspicious why some patients only wanted oxycontin or oxycodone for their pain, as well as patients claiming it's the only drug(s) that helped their pain. I believe that oxycodone is the generic name for Roxicodone, which is also obviously percocet without the tylenol. Oxycontin and oxycodone are the same thing, EXCEPT oxycodone is a quick release tablet, and oxycontin is a slow release of the same med. Hydrocodone is the ingredient in Vicodin and Lortab. Although they are all narcotics, vicodin and lortab are lesser strength than the oxy's and morphine.

I dont see how it could show up different, since the active drug in both oxycodone and oxycontin is the same drug, oxycodone. On 10/13, I had total knee replacement. They put me on lots of pain meds including morphine, percocet and oxycontin. I am home and have to go to PT twice weekly which is quite painful. I went to my surgeon on 11/2 and he said to wean off of oxycontin and oxycodone. He didn't explain how to go about that. My husband cut the oxycontin in half and I took that once at night and once in the morning for 3 days.

You should be taking the OxyContin for persistent pain and the Percocet for breakthrough pain. Since OxyContin is a 12 hour extended-release formulation of oxycodone it can probably be reduced to just twice daily initially since there's only 24 hours in one day. Of course Percocet is an immediate release formulation of oxycodone and thus has a shorter half-life than the OxyContin. I'm not sure of your question and the answer you're looking for but I'll try. Oxycontin is the extended release form of Oxycodone. It should last up to 12 hrs. opposed to 4-6 hrs. with the Oxycodone. I don'rt feel that there is any difference between the two as far as pain management goes. Why do you ask?

My question is about tolerance. Up until recently, my oxycodone/acetaminophen in conjunction with the Oxycontin had been a lifesaver. I believe I have grown tolerant of the Oxycodone/Acetaminophen 5/325. Do you think asking my doctor to up my mg on the Oxycodone/Acetaminophen would be too much with the Oxycontin? 7.5? Maybe. Hope all makes sense, and anyone willing to give me some input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

To my knowledge the answer to your question is yes 20mgs of oxycodone/percocet is the same amount of oxycodone that is in a 20mg oxycontin, its just in an extended release formula. I was pretty heavily into methadone and oxycontin(various other opiates) and I still dont know if this answer is correct or not. Why dont you ask your doctor or pharmacist, they would be able to provide you with the info your looking for.

I'm on so much medicine for my chronic pain and they are always changing it. A lot of times, I end up cutting my dose in half if I think I don't need as much but still need something. Okay, right now, before I had my coffee, I made a mistake. I cut 1/2 my oxycontin 40 mg. in half thinking it was my 30 mg, oxycodone. I had already taken my 40 mg. oxycontin at around 6 am like I'm supposed to. Went back to sleep and woke up to take my break through and accidently broke the 40 mg.

They are the same. Roxicodone is just a brand name for oxycodone. The oxycontin is extended release so it helps keep your pain level and then when you have breakthrough pain the instant release oxycodone will hit it hard and fast to get it under control. Only taking the instant release can be bad because you can have a lot of ups and downs, like during sleep it will wear off and you will wake up in a ton of pain and probably in withdrawals, with the ER it will keep you level through the night.

m trying to find out if I can do my OxyContin instead of oxycodone with the patch, but I would only do 20mg . 2) I put the patch on at 8am this morning and I can't really feel a difference......will it start or does it need more time?
