605939 tn?1226281272 Nuts, fish and other foods containing omega-3 fatty acids are other good choices for improving your LDL cholesterol to HDL cholesterol ratio. Drink alcohol only in moderation. In some studies, moderate use of alcohol has been linked with higher levels of HDL cholesterol — but the benefits aren't strong enough to recommend alcohol for anyone who doesn't drink already. If you choose to drink alcohol, do so in moderation.
15 woman5 There are several ways that you can get omega 3s in your daily routine. Eating fish that contain high amounts of omega -3 (refer to the chart at the bottom of the omega-3 page in your lab report). You can also take an omega-3 supplement. Always check with your provider on the correct amount for you and if they prefer a specific brand. When you are looking for a supplement - pay attention to the amount of omega-3 listed on the label. Avoid ones that have "other fish oil" listed.
Avatar f tn I've purchased galic and parsley tablets as well as Omega 3-6-9 tablets in the hope of getting my colesterol levels to a normal numbering. But today I read that Omega 6 isn't that good as it could counter the effect of Omega 3 and induce inflammation. Now I"m wondering if I just spent 30$ for nothing. What do you think?

Avatar m tn Well aerobic exercise, losing weight, avoiding saturated fats and taking mono-unsaturated fats helps raise HDL levels. Other than this omega-3 fatty acid supplements and niacin can also help raise the HDL levels but ask your doctor before starting this. Take care! The medical advice given should not be considered a substitute for medical care provided by a doctor who can examine you.
Avatar n tn I'm betting you have absolutely nothing to worry about. Hdl levels increase with aerobic exercise, and also Omega 3 fish oil will raise hdl levels as well.
720228 tn?1377748631 How much omega 3, 6, 9? just had my cholestrol checked and it was 255. I am also starting prevastation. I know that you can not be pregnant while on this medication but if you happen to become pregnant while taking it I know to stop it immediately. What if any are the risks of taking this medication during the first two to three weeks of pregnancy since it takes that long to find out that you are pregnant?
Avatar m tn The reason I'm putting this on here is because I take Barleans Flax Oil caps (four a day, not very many), and Nordic Naturals Omega 3 caps (7 per day). The high HDL would seem to indicate these are being assimilated, which is the hardest part of taking supplements -- finding a brand that actually is absorbed well. So just wanted to let everyone know. Also wanted to comment on PSA testing, or Prostate Specific Antigen.

Avatar f tn As stated on the previous comment you can try olive oil and diets that are high in mono unsaturated and poly unsaturated fats these are commonly found in in olive oil, flax oils, nuts, fish and other foods containing omega-3 fatty acids(you may try taking Omega 3 supplement to improve your LDL cholesterol to HDL cholesterol ratio.
Avatar m tn Supplementing with cranberry juice (also comes in capsule form) and Omega-3 (fish oil or flaxseed) helps. If you or your doctor wants to raise the HDL faster by using prescription medications, niacin would be the drug to use. It has it's own side effects though and I don't know if it would be compatable with your A-fib. BTW, your A-fib itself might present a greater stroke risk than plague formation. A-fib allows blood to stagnate in the atria and form tiny clots.
Avatar f tn The most important for the heart is EFA, which is found in largest amounts in fish oil, but flax and hemp oil are also very high in omega 3 oils. But omega 3 oils don't do the same thing as statins. Statins lower LDL cholesterol, the bad kind, whereas omega 3 oils provide the good kind of cholesterol, HDL. If you raise HDL, that will be more preventive of future heart disease than lowering LDL unless you're LDL was sky high.
317787 tn?1473362051 Krill oil is a source of certain types of Omega 3 oils. There are different ones. Fish oil contains two types, and flax seed oil and hemp seed oil, for example, supply some as well. Now, I have a personal objection to krill oil, which is, krill are being killed off to get this oil and they are the food supply for most of what lives in the ocean, especially the larger creatures. Krill are tiny crustaceans and so it takes millions and millions of them to make some oil.
Avatar n tn 211 I was recently denied preferred life insurance due to an imbalance in my ratio (6.3) I have been advised to cut out fast food, and take omega 3 caps. Of course a little exercise wouldn't hurt. Any other ideas?
Avatar n tn (I suggest Nature's Plus Herbal Actives Red Yeast Rice Extended Release 600 mg) Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil and vitamin B3 (niacin), remain the champions of the supplements. Both fish oil and niacin boost HDL, plump up LDL particles, and reduce inflammation. flaxseed contains three ingredients that aid in maintaining heart health.
422924 tn?1331767919 Your numbers are perfect, I don't think you should go any lower on your LDL unless you have heart disease or some major risk factors. Also, your HDL is great as well. You can increase it with Omega 3 fatty acids like fish oil. Also, staying natural with fruits and veggies and staying away from processed foods will help your LDL if you do need to lower it. Overall, I think your numbers are great, nice job!
Avatar f tn Most of the time it is hereditary. Do you have siblings? Do you know their HDL levels? Dark chocolate and salmon raise HDL along with fish oil. Processed meats are the worse thing to eat i.e. deli meat, hotdogs, brats. Smoked meats are not good either which includes ham. Stay away from any organ meat, which is in a lot of the processed meats. Look for labels stating Omega 3 when buying food. You may think that you are eating healthy, when you may not be strict enough with your diet.
Avatar f tn Ask your doctor about taking Omega 3 fatty acids and niacin, both can help increase HDL.
Avatar n tn Then it went to the low 30's, where it has stayed. I have read and tried a variety of things. The hdl remains lower and is slowly going lower. Today in a screening it was 23. I have been very overweight but have lost 25 pounds. I exercise regularly. (I have NASH, GERD and sleep apnea.) I have never smoked as such. My internist and cardiologist are concerned about my hdl; however, they are at a loss to deal with it, especially without taking meds that will further compromise my liver.
Avatar f tn The ratio of your LDL and HDL is wonderful, the HDL is pushing the LDL out of your arteries, and I'm betting your arteries are clean. I'd mix in a gram of Omega 3 fish oils, a gram twice a day, and I'm betting you will see your Tri's go lower. Diabetes should be, in my opinion, your biggest worry. Diabetes and heart disease go hand in hand. Keep us informed.
152159 tn?1200086054 nothing just HDL getting lower and lower. i researched and started taking fish oil with omega 3. in 6 months taking it everyday with my morning juice. my LDL went from 138 to 114, my HDL from 28 to 38, my TCh 184 to 168 and my ratio went from 6.6 to 4.3. i realize my situation is not as serious as yours, however my mother is a 85 lb toothpick and eats very little, yet her cholesterol too is a little over.
Avatar n tn If there is no improvement, you should ask your doctor about cholesterol lowering drugs such as statins. Salmon, dark chocolate, fish oil raises HDL in most people. Look for foods with Omega 3. Read labels on all the food you buy. You will be surprised how much salt is in the foods you buy. Hope you can get your blood work turned back in the right direction. Take care.
523927 tn?1257022304 The only prescription I take is Atenolol for PAC's/PVC's 25 mg. It seems that this can possibly reduce HDL levels. I take CoQ10 and fish oil everyday (good brands). I am considering adding more vitamin C, zinc, and tribulus terrestris to my supplements, as these appear to help with testosterone and HDL. Obviously, make sure I get exercise, have a good diet, and maybe have some red wine daily. I don't eat much fast food and I plan on cutting out more sugar and carbs from my diet.
Avatar n tn What else can I do to raise the levels of hdl? They say fish has the omega 3 fatty acids and are a good source as well as red wine. Also, why does the doctor start someone at 500 mg a day and then up it over the next few months? They say mine is abnormally low for a 44 year old female, so why not the 2000 mg. a day from the start? I worry about getting the levels up before menopause as a womans risk of heart disease increases at that time as well.
Avatar f tn Avoid foods that contain saturated and Trans fats as they raise LDL cholesterol and damage your blood vessels. Nuts, fish and other foods containing omega-3 fatty acids are helpful in changing your LDL cholesterol to HDL cholesterol ratio. Adopt lifestyle changes. Exercise daily and avoid smoking and alcohol ingestion. These all will help. Do keep me posted. Best luck and regards!
Avatar m tn These are found in things like olive oil, peanut butter, avocado oil. Cranberry juice increases HDL as does omega 3 fatty acids, found in fish and some other foods. Don't listen to any remarks regarding calcium supplements because this doesn't seem to improve HDL in men or post menopausal women. I hope that's given some help.
Avatar n tn Salmon, dark chocolate raise HDL levels. Look for Omega 3 in your foods. For men the HDL is lower than for women. You should try to get your HDL at least in the thirties if not higher. You can ask your doctor about fish oil also. A good multi-B vitamin is good for the heart and nervous system.
1310757 tn?1273649028 Ed is correct, Tri's can be reduced with Omega 3's and by cutting out the empty carbs such as breads, sugars and pastas. Also, anything that metabolizes as sugar such as alcohol.
Avatar m tn Your HDL can be raised further by consuming fish with omega-3 fatty acids (such as salmon), consuming moderate amounts of red wine or increasing your aerobic exercise.
Avatar n tn You need to speak with your doctor for clarification. Zocor and Crestor are both used to reduce LDL cholesterol and triglycercides not raise HDL levels. Also ask your doctor for an A1c [hemoglobin A1c] test to see how well you are controlling your glucose levels and whether your lifestyle has made you a candidate for diabetes.
