Avatar n tn Most uncomplicated UTIs can be treated with oral antibiotics such as trimethoprim, cephalosporins, nitrofurantoin, or a fluoroquinolone (e.g., ciprofloxacin or levofloxacin). Trimethoprim is probably the most widely used antibiotic for UTIs and is usually taken for 7 days. It is often recommended that trimethoprim be taken at night to ensure maximal urinary concentrations and increase its effectiveness.
Avatar f tn If you get recurrent urinary tract infections or if the infection gets into your kidneys, your caregiver may recommend taking nitrofurantoin (trade name Macrodantin or Macrobid) for the rest of your pregnancy to prevent another infection. You should stop taking this drug at about 36 weeks (or immediately if you go into preterm labor) because there's a very small risk that it will destroy some of your baby's red blood cells if you take it within several days of delivery.
Avatar f tn My ultra sound was normal, as well as the urinalysis (taken when no symptoms of a uti were present). I then started taking Nitrofurantoin Macrocrystal (a daily antibiotic or taken after sex, also called Macrodantin). The UTIs went away during this time. However, my prescription has expired and the UTIs are back. Does anyone have experience with long term antibiotic treatments? How long does typical treatment for chronic UTIs last? I am worried about taking antibiotics for more than a year.
Avatar m tn I have just got to 3 days on nitrofurantoin for uti, dizziness and headache got too bad as side effects. And now I'm losing my hearing too, no wax. It's inside and pain all over my face. Still dizzy, hearing been getting worse all day. Very quick. It's definitely the nitrofurantoin. I wondered as it says it can swell the salivary glands, cause sore throats and constant cold if it's to do with thst or a part of the nerve damage side effect? Did it resolve for you?
Avatar m tn Hi , Gabapin (Gabapentin also called Neurontin) is a neurologic drug probably given for the tingling. But the Nitrofurantoin has tingling as a less common side affect. So it will probably go away when you stop the antibiotic. If it is working she can stay on it until it is finished then the tingling will go away and she can get off the Gabapin too. Gabapin causes sleepiness or tireness as well.
1279758 tn?1282813393 If the highest sensitivity is to nitrofurantoin then you can take these tablets, 50 to 100 mg thrice or 4 times a day. If you get the longer acting versions then you can take 100 mg twice a day. There are several brands available: brand names; Macrobid, Furadantin, Macrodantin, Nitro Macro and Urantoin. A full course is seven days. Otherwise you will have to take a combination of antibiotics of lower sensitivity as prescribed. Nitrofurantoin is contraindicated if you have kidney problems.
Avatar f tn There is always a risk for side effects, interactions or allergic reactions, so please make sure both meds are suitable for you by asking a physician.
Avatar f tn I understand your concern. Nitrofurantoin can indeed result to neuropathies as one of its side effects. This can happen anytime during or post treatment. It varies in severity and very uncommonly may become irreversible. I suggest that you have this looked at by your doctor or a neurologist to assess for other causes. Tests may be in order such as nerve conduction velocity or electromyography to pinpoint the cause. Also report to your doctor any changes in symptoms or progression.
966938 tn?1371104029 I'm on anti tubercular treatment since last 17 mths..another month for ATT and then antiepileptic shall continue for another 3 mths. I've had many many side effects all these months and nausea has become a permanent part of my stomach now but since last almost 2 mths, its just unbearable. I had a bad c-root wisdom tooth which had to be extracted but was being delayed due to my ATT but 2 mths back it caused a severe cheek bite and had to be extracted.
Avatar f tn Recently I have started several different medications: -omeprazol for gastritis -nitrofurantoin for a uti -adderall for adhd, but i've taken it in the past and never had headaches or nausea My brief online research indicates that omeprazol can cause headaches, but my headaches/nausea started after I began nitrofurantoin. I haven't seen anything indicating that headaches are a common side effect, but nausea is.
Avatar f tn m in my first trimester and I have a urinary track infection, and a doctor at a hospital prescribed me Nitrofurantoin 100 mg , 4 times a day, of course the side effects are worse in me, I guess because of my pregnancy, but I need to know if it's really safe for my baby, I'm not having any problems in my pregnancy, and I don't have any spotting, thanks God. But I had a miscarriage before and I'm very concerned about any pills doctors make me take.
Avatar f tn Hello, I am a 37 year old woman and I have had Tourette's since I was about 7. I would say that I have a mild case. I have a lot of facial ticking and arms, mostly upper body, but also lower once in a while. My ticking involves a lot of squeezing and tensing up in my arms and neck and I have injured myself in the past by my ticking. I have had arm pain and have pulled my neck in the past. I do have neck pain frequently.

Avatar m tn 9 days ago Nitrofurantoin (200g a day for 5 days) was taken and daily birth control (Qlaira). Both are known to decrease levels of haptoglobin but nothing about complete depletion. Could this be an extended effect from Nitrofurantoin? When should the test be repeated ?
Avatar m tn This usally happens when we have frequent sex (a couple of times daily) or prolong vaginal sex. I use to take macrodantin and cipro and I would clear. Now the macrodantin is not effective and I needed to take cipro with doxy for 21 days and that seemed to finally clear. I have had a test for gc or ngu and it was negative. I do not have pain when i urinate so I feel that it may not be a UTI but PID. Any idea's on what to do?
11649518 tn?1425144060 s Holiday Time, there is NO getting a hold of a Dr. about it. I have some Macrodantin 50mg (Nitrofurantoin 50mg is the generic) that I was supposed to take 1 every day to stop the infection. But, I haven't been taking them because of the Harvoni. I have the antispasm pills (the ones that turn your pee orange) and I am trying to drink cranberry juice, but it is not helping much. Does anyone have any suggestions ? I'd really appreciate any help.
