Niaspan increase hdl

Common Questions and Answers about Niaspan increase hdl

niaspan

Avatar m tn t help me, though. I was able to raise my HDL from 32 to 50 with 2000 mg of Niaspan. The niaspan also lowered my triglycerides and my LDL as well. It is interesting that your triglycerides are going up. Are you eating things like bread? Last year, I had to cut back on my carbs to lower my blood sugar. It also lower my triglycerides and I also lost weight as well (30 lbs over 9 months). I had to avoid certain vegetables like corn and potatoes.
Avatar n tn Crestor is an atypical statin in that it raises the HDL by 5-10%, but more importantly decreases through pleomorphic effects the crp level, There is some data that increasing HDL with Niaspan and gemfibrozil in men decreases mortallity if their initial HDL is below 35-40. I would probably start a statin, and see what happens to your ldl and hdl. If the hdl remains low, then I would add gemfibrozil to raise it ( since Niaspan did not work).
475570 tn?1280941363 Here is the basis of what they found. They were able to produce additional HDL particles, however the new particles are smaller in size and do not have a protective property against CAD. The naturally occurring HDL in your body is better at doing it's job than the artificially produced HDL. The reason the trial was stopped was because they were not seeing any reduction in cardiac events between the Niacin control group and the placebo control group.
Avatar n tn 3/07/08: blood work (non-fasting) : CRP 5.16, CHOL 194, HDL 44, LDL 120, triglyceride 179 9/20/05: blood work (fasting): CHOL 188, HDL 65, LDL 109, triglyceride 68 6/30/04: blood work (fasting): CRP < 1.0, CHOL 188, HDL 65, LDL 106, triglyceride 65 I do not like the trends I am seeing. My new PCP doctor (endocrinologist) is specifically concerned about CRP reading in conjunction w/history of heart disease in my family.
Avatar m tn I cannot find any literature on the matter. Niaspan will certainly address the low HDL. However, can you clarify whether (1) Niaspan would treat fatty liver and (2) is Niaspan's use contradicted with those diagnosed with fatty liver disease?
Avatar n tn In an effort to increase my HDL, I take Niaspan & Zocor.....Recently my MD upped the Zocor from 5mgl. to 10mgl.... Last couple weeks, have had more trouble sleeping, usually waking up after a dream (not nightmares, but somewhat vivid dreams)...I've checked out few sites, & saw that statins can cause sleep problems....Have others here had sleep problems while taking a statin?........
Avatar m tn You may want to try the Niacin (Niaspan is Niacin), it will definitely increase your HDL. I'm told that if you take it with aspirin it lessens the effect of the facial flushing. Also, a fatty liver is common in overweight individuals, the doctors I volunteer with have no issues prescribing cholesterol meds to individuals with fatty livers. It is very important, however, that you get your blood panel checked every 6 months or so to watch out for changes in your liver function.
Avatar f tn In order to see an improvement from exercise, you need to be meeting the AHA recommended levels of 30 mins of moderate activity most days of the week. This will increase your HDL, but you should not start an increased exercise program without first speaking to your doctor for his OK. Also, ask him about Niacin, it can increase HDL by over 20%, but has some side effects so please don't start without discussing it with him as well. I don't know about pranayams and what effect they have.
Avatar n tn Just read that Metoprolol can lower HDL. Sometimes my HDL will get in the upper 30's which is below the normal 40 that is suggested. Worries me because I have two people I know that have had heart attacks and their LDL was in the 60's. Their HDL was low (below 30) which doctor told them that this allow caused their buildup. I want to get HDL up and I exercise daily, eat fish twice a week, take Niaspan, and Krill oil. Thinking the Metoprolol is the issue.
7052683 tn?1392938795 He was also on Niaspan and only gets the flushing. But he had to go down to every other day on Niaspan. So, you may have to do something like that. If you are on a very high dose of Niaspan then less common side effects can be fever, diarrhea, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, headache and rash. But my husband is on 500mg with no problem. I don't know what they consider a high dose. The Niaspan is only really for lowering your Triglycerides not the cholesterol.
Avatar n tn In the last 4 months, I have begun to experience increase in shortness of breath and exercise-induced angina (stable). I take Plavix, Lipitor, Niaspan (just recently), Atenelol, and aspirin. Should I seek a second opinion or is this blockage anything I should be overly concerned with?
Avatar n tn I am a 44 year old male and take 2000mg of Niaspan every day and my HDL is up from 29 to 43..my LDL is down to 66 and my trigs are 82. Niacin plus a good diet can give you good numbers. I already had heart disease before I got serious so I know how it feels to have a time bomb in your heart and I am doing my best to reverse or stop the plaque from progressing.
Avatar n tn Lipitor can increase HDL by approx 15% which would help. I would think twice about Niaspan as the most recent data suggests that the HDL that is artificially created by Niacin is not as effective against LDL as naturally occurring HDL. If you're healthy, you can increase HDL with exercise, just speak to your doctor first. Lipitor is a very safe and effective drug. In addition to the cholesterol lower properties, statins are also being proven to lower inflammation which is huge.
Avatar m tn To raise HDL, 1) increase aerobic exercise 2) lose weight if overweight 3) cut down on refined carbohydrates (sugars, white flour) 4) reduce saturated fat/increase monounsaturated fats intake. From what I have read, as far as niacin goes, only high-dose niacin (such as prescription Niaspan) will have an effect on HDL and you must be monitored with blood tests to make sure there is no ensuing liver damage. Good luck... I have the HDL same problem.
Avatar n tn s cholesterol sounds about right considering the medication she is on. I take 20 mg of Lipitor a night and 2000 mg of Niaspan. My total cholesterol is 101, HDL 52, LDL 41, Tri are 42. I have had one heart attack. At the time of the MI, my total cholesterol was 198, HDL 32, LDL 139 and triglyceride were 123. For people with existing heart disease, the Optimal LDL is <100 but most Drs now believe that <70 is best. About 30 years, the Drs thought a Total cholesterol of <300 was normal.
Avatar m tn 25mg coreg BID, 10 mg lisinopril QD, lipitor 40mg QD, zetia 5mg QD, Plavix 75mg QD, asprin 325mg QD, Pristique 50mg QD, 100mg co-q10 BID, fish oil 2500mg BID, Niaspan 2000 mg QD bedtime after asprin. HDL RX 2 tabs Bid. Cardilogist wants to gradually bring up coreg to 25mg BID and lisinopril 20mg QD. Cholesterol numbers are 110 total, 44 HDL and 58 LDL, Triglycerides are 86. As we increase will have weekly blood test for creatinine and potassium levels, also doing BP daily and recording.
Avatar n tn There are different forms of HDL. HDL 2 is more powerful than HDL 3. So, if you HDL 2 is in range, you may be worrying for no reason. HDL can only be readily raised by losing weight, controling diabetes or prediabetes, or by taking niacin. Avoiding execessive carbohydrates even in people with normal glucose control may be helpful as well. How much fish oil can I safely take? Look at the AHA website. They give recommendations as to intake of fish oil.
Avatar m tn Hi, can any one give me some tips of how i can increase my HDL level coz it is on the borderline (1.00) form my last blood test. Thanks.
Avatar n tn November 3, 2009 issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC), Dr Justin MS Lee (University of Oxford, UK) and colleagues report that 2 g of modified-release nicotinic acid (Niaspan, Abbott Laboratories) daily, on top of statins, resulted in a 1.64 mm2 reduction in carotid wall area on MRI, compared with placebo, in patients with vascular disease and low HDL.
Avatar m tn re in the boarder line high range. Your HDL is okay but could be better, higher. HDL is the one that pushes up the total Cholesterol count, your 200 is okay, but suppose 210 would be better if the extra 10 was in HDL... strange world. In any case, nothing worrisome in your numbers, but working to better them is always good advice.
Avatar m tn Total Chol about 120 or lower Triglycerides about 115 or lower HDL fairly steady at about 35. has always been low. Last monday TG rose to 204 and HDL dropped to 29. Total Chol was 115 and LDL direct was 55. My change was dropping lisinopril due to a couch and increasing Coreg from 3.125 mg 2x/d to 6.25 mg 2x/d this has shifted my cardiac disease risk in the wrong direction. Does it make sense that the lipid change is due to coreg dose this small?
Avatar f tn Howeverk, Crestor was shown to reduce plaque and had better results in clinical studies. Also, with the Niaspan, it is known to raise HDL level but HDL is not necessarily protective as they thought. But that study may be skewed because it was done on all cardiac patients. You may want to read about Vytorin there was a problem with it and I can't remember all the details.
Avatar n tn FYI, High HDL is a good thing, it's the LDL that needs to be kept under 130. HDL is a good cholesterol that binds with LDL to remove it from your blood. An HDL over 55 is a very good number. Also, it is not uncommon to experience a cardiac event after a normal EKG. Normally, an EKG can only detect a heart attack while it's happening or if there is some problem with the electricle impulses of the heart. It will pick up a previous MI but is not a good indicator of future cardiac events.
159619 tn?1707018272 I do think that maintaining a recommended ldl profile is important, but HDL and the ratio of hdl to total cholesterol are also important. I think that they have known this since the 50's, but not exactly why. I just look at coronary plaques as scaring from zits that you get on the inside of your arteries that start out about the same as what you would get on your face. We all know that cleaning the oils, which are basically cholesterol, from your face will prevent these from forming.
Tbd Hello and welcome to the forum. HDL or good cholesterol will increase as you want it to not only through diet but especially through exercise. Getting active is number one on the list and losing weight is number two for how to improve your HDL number. https://www.webmd.com/heart/how-to-boost-your-good-cholesterol. They also recommend choose 'better' fats in your diet, drink alcohol sparingly and to stop smoking if you do.
