Niaspan and hdl

Common Questions and Answers about Niaspan and hdl

niaspan

Avatar n tn I cycle quite a bit now after finding out about the heart disease. Total Cholestrol 121, LDL 61, HDL fluctuates between 36 and 45. Medications on: Metroprolol 25MG to control tachycardia, Lipitor 20MG, Niaspan 1000MG, Nexium 40MG, 81MG aspirin every three days because once a day caused petechia, Krill oil, Depakote 125MG and Klonopin .5MG at bedtime. Had calcium score done a few months ago and score went from 20 (two years ago) to 19 (now).
Avatar n tn I would probably start a statin, and see what happens to your ldl and hdl. If the hdl remains low, then I would add gemfibrozil to raise it ( since Niaspan did not work).
Avatar m tn Recently, my doctor suggested that he has successfully treated and eliminated fatty liver with Niaspan. I cannot find any literature on the matter. Niaspan will certainly address the low HDL. However, can you clarify whether (1) Niaspan would treat fatty liver and (2) is Niaspan's use contradicted with those diagnosed with fatty liver disease?
Avatar m tn LDL 65, 26, and 16mg. Triglycerides 183, 29, and 36mg. HDL 47, 53, and 34mg. These were dramatic improvements, except for the HDL. I am advised the 'good' cholesterol range is 50-200mg. If mine goes below 50mg in the next test do I have a problem? After the last test, doctor reduced my Lipitor prescription from 40 to 20mg. On my own decision I have now reduced the niacin from 1,500 to 1,000mg.
7052683 tn?1392938795 He was also on Niaspan and only gets the flushing. But he had to go down to every other day on Niaspan. So, you may have to do something like that. If you are on a very high dose of Niaspan then less common side effects can be fever, diarrhea, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, headache and rash. But my husband is on 500mg with no problem. I don't know what they consider a high dose. The Niaspan is only really for lowering your Triglycerides not the cholesterol.
Avatar n tn I am a 44 year old male and take 2000mg of Niaspan every day and my HDL is up from 29 to 43..my LDL is down to 66 and my trigs are 82. Niacin plus a good diet can give you good numbers. I already had heart disease before I got serious so I know how it feels to have a time bomb in your heart and I am doing my best to reverse or stop the plaque from progressing.
Avatar m tn ”) in a week or so. I read what the side effects are on Niaspan and they are not good at all and I don’t need to go through all that now. He was about to add a new statin to that until he realized that he was giving me too much all at once-as he said later. New Statin down the road (A big Maybe on that one)? I am going to do exactly what I did the last time 2 years ago-sans the impastation-take fish oil omega 3 over the counter-the Dr.
475570 tn?1280941363 I just want to add that this was a study of Niaspan - the time release version of Niacin - and not Niacin.
Avatar m tn t help me, though. I was able to raise my HDL from 32 to 50 with 2000 mg of Niaspan. The niaspan also lowered my triglycerides and my LDL as well. It is interesting that your triglycerides are going up. Are you eating things like bread? Last year, I had to cut back on my carbs to lower my blood sugar. It also lower my triglycerides and I also lost weight as well (30 lbs over 9 months). I had to avoid certain vegetables like corn and potatoes.
Avatar n tn s cholesterol sounds about right considering the medication she is on. I take 20 mg of Lipitor a night and 2000 mg of Niaspan. My total cholesterol is 101, HDL 52, LDL 41, Tri are 42. I have had one heart attack. At the time of the MI, my total cholesterol was 198, HDL 32, LDL 139 and triglyceride were 123. For people with existing heart disease, the Optimal LDL is <100 but most Drs now believe that <70 is best. About 30 years, the Drs thought a Total cholesterol of <300 was normal.
Avatar n tn In an effort to increase my HDL, I take Niaspan & Zocor.....Recently my MD upped the Zocor from 5mgl. to 10mgl.... Last couple weeks, have had more trouble sleeping, usually waking up after a dream (not nightmares, but somewhat vivid dreams)...I've checked out few sites, & saw that statins can cause sleep problems....Have others here had sleep problems while taking a statin?........
Avatar m tn Cardilogist wants to gradually bring up coreg to 25mg BID and lisinopril 20mg QD. Cholesterol numbers are 110 total, 44 HDL and 58 LDL, Triglycerides are 86. As we increase will have weekly blood test for creatinine and potassium levels, also doing BP daily and recording. I have noticed as BP gets lower the heart rate increases. Is this normal with this med therapy and is this part of the remodeling?
Avatar n tn 64 mm2 reduction in carotid wall area on MRI, compared with placebo, in patients with vascular disease and low HDL.
Avatar n tn In the last 4 months, I have begun to experience increase in shortness of breath and exercise-induced angina (stable). I take Plavix, Lipitor, Niaspan (just recently), Atenelol, and aspirin. Should I seek a second opinion or is this blockage anything I should be overly concerned with?
Avatar n tn how can i raise the HDL? I have started taking Fish oil(combo fish, borage, flaxseed) and i need to get in teh exercise routine. I dont drink but if drinking 1 glass of red wine will help i will. (Ill hold my nose ;) Am i in danger of an immediate heart attack? This has stressed me out to no end and i can stop looking online about it and everything i read is so upsetting. How much fish oil can I safely take? I can read about Niacin........
Avatar n tn what do you think is a better drug: I have an hdl of 34 and very low bad cholesterol. i've been on niaspam and my dr. thinks I should change to lipitor because of the new drug studies on lipitor. I am a perfect weight, and i'm 63 with no incidents of heart attack but my arteries do show significant arterilosclerosis. I feel healthy and seem great so far! any advice appreciated.
730053 tn?1234534651 Hospital ran lipid panel showing LDL 68, Triglycerides 400, HDL 28, nuclear treadmill stress test that achieved hr of 150, BP held at 140/75 and revealed an ejection fraction of 67, small thrombosis below right artery, bigeminal and trigeminal PVCs and occasional PACs during recovery, none occurred during the test itself. Cardiac cath performed the next day revealed a re-narrowing of right artery. Above the narrowed section, a tear was discovered (presumed site of plaque rupture).
159619 tn?1707018272 I do think that maintaining a recommended ldl profile is important, but HDL and the ratio of hdl to total cholesterol are also important. I think that they have known this since the 50's, but not exactly why. I just look at coronary plaques as scaring from zits that you get on the inside of your arteries that start out about the same as what you would get on your face. We all know that cleaning the oils, which are basically cholesterol, from your face will prevent these from forming.
Avatar m tn I have already had one bad experience with another statin, Advicor, that resulted in me having permanent lymphedema in my ankles and legs. Now I am unsure about Niaspan. I would appreciate any comments on Niaspan please. Thanks.
907968 tn?1292622204 I pointed out the fact that the overall cholesteral was 104mm/dl to my PCP and asked about cutting it in half back. She liked the idea but prescribed 2000mg fish oil 2x/day. I could only find 1200mg horse pills, a week later I stopped taking them because of the size. I'm back to taking them plus she prescribed Niaspan for the low HDL and said if this doesn't help we'll try Crestor. Either way, you could look at this as an experiment...
212161 tn?1599427282 hi just got my blood work back my triglycerides are 480 my cardio dr wanted me to go on niaspan but it causes me to faint . does anyone know how to get them down. without meds i take liptor now but not helping and is 480 really bad .
Avatar n tn Well, it depends on what kind of medication you are on. I am taking Niaspan for cholestoral and these are the side effects of it. When your body have enough of these vitamins, it flushes out of body like this. It is advised by proffessionals to take an aspirin half an hour before taking Niaspan to avoid this flush. In my case, I simply stopped taking Niaspan and seek alternative from my doctor. It is always good to see doctor in such cases. I hope this is helpful to you.
