Common Questions and Answers about Niaspan and statins

niaspan

Avatar n tn I was on simvastatin also and my cpk was high and getting higher and they took me off immediatly. as I understand it all statins have the potential to cause cpk to rise. you may want to stop taking it. check w/ your Dr.
Avatar m tn I am committed to prevention as it relates to my heart health and this poor family history and wish to do all possible to avoid this fate. A few years ago, I underwent a high resolution cardiac CT tomography examination. The results indicated that while my calcium score of 10.8 is considered “Mild:, it places me in the 89th percentile for asymptomatic males of my age (88% of men under 40 have a lower calcium score).
Avatar n tn In an effort to increase my HDL, I take Niaspan & Zocor.....Recently my MD upped the Zocor from 5mgl. to 10mgl.... Last couple weeks, have had more trouble sleeping, usually waking up after a dream (not nightmares, but somewhat vivid dreams)...I've checked out few sites, & saw that statins can cause sleep problems....Have others here had sleep problems while taking a statin?........
Avatar n tn November 3, 2009 issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC), Dr Justin MS Lee (University of Oxford, UK) and colleagues report that 2 g of modified-release nicotinic acid (Niaspan, Abbott Laboratories) daily, on top of statins, resulted in a 1.64 mm2 reduction in carotid wall area on MRI, compared with placebo, in patients with vascular disease and low HDL.
Avatar n tn t control cholestrol by exercise or food so i changed three doctors and each gave me a different Statins and the CPK now reaches 1375 . , i tried Ezytrol for a while but it's effect was very low .the issue is i stopped taking any cholestrol medicin for a period of nearly 6 months but CPK level is not getting low .
Avatar n tn LOL, I'm not anywhere near over 70 YET! I hope to get there though...LOL. When I was place on Lipitor, it was HORRIBLE. I would be in tears at work all day due to the severe muscle aches and pains. I was put back on 60 mg of Zocor, which still wasn't lowering my over-all cholesterol levels, nor helping my HDLs, LDLs, or triglycerides. My liver naturally overproduces for some reason, and no specialist can seem to figure out why after all these years.
Avatar n tn synchronizer of the bottom ventricles of the heart. He is on maximum medication and has been doing relatively well until about 2 months ago when he started noticebly dragging his right leg and not swinging his right arm. He is also loosing function in his right hand. His cardiologist did a CT scan of the head which was normal, ruling out stroke or brain bleed. His bloodwork was normal. A nuclear stress test has been done & we will receive those results in 2 days.
Avatar n tn Crestor is an atypical statin in that it raises the HDL by 5-10%, but more importantly decreases through pleomorphic effects the crp level, There is some data that increasing HDL with Niaspan and gemfibrozil in men decreases mortallity if their initial HDL is below 35-40. I would probably start a statin, and see what happens to your ldl and hdl. If the hdl remains low, then I would add gemfibrozil to raise it ( since Niaspan did not work).
Avatar n tn Lipitor is very safe and extremely effective. I'm an examp;le of a knot-head who was afraid of statins and decided to follow the 'natural' route. My decision led to eight stents, heart attacks, a pacemaker and bypass surgery. Agressive Cardiac Artery Disease needs to be addressed from a number of levels in my opinion, including exercise, weight loss, statins, dietary changes and stress relief.
Avatar m tn I just got off of zetia and welchol. I could not take statins. I tried them all. Used to take Niaspan and fenofibrate but they took me off cause both cause problems in some and had not 'reduced the incidence of cardiac events'. I think they have concluded that neither do Zetia, except when used with a statin, so it is the statin doing the work. I also think Welchol has been shown to not reduce cardiac events too. not sure. I am on Repatha. Third bi weekly shot.
Avatar f tn He tried vitorin and his labs looked good but since they have no research on it like they do with Crestor so they pushed that one on him plus the Niaspan. He got arthritis from it and his platelet count dropped too low, and his muscles are fatigued but not achy a little but not too bad just a little. He was able to get the cholesterol down to 200 but not the bp or his weight. We were on the Greek diet and it helped a little but not too much. So we saw the video Forks Over Knives and read Dr.
Avatar m tn Recently, my doctor suggested that he has successfully treated and eliminated fatty liver with Niaspan. I cannot find any literature on the matter. Niaspan will certainly address the low HDL. However, can you clarify whether (1) Niaspan would treat fatty liver and (2) is Niaspan's use contradicted with those diagnosed with fatty liver disease?
159619 tn?1707018272 I have used stains for many years and have had excellent results without any issues what so ever. and have been very pleased with the results. With the use of statins and a major change in lifestyle including exercise and diet, I have lost weight (70 lbs) and reduced my cholesterol levels to a low of a TC of 155 with an LDL of 77, so I'm very happy.
Avatar f tn Certain other cholesterol-lowering drugs, such as gemfibrozil (Lopid) and niacin (Niacor, Niaspan), increase the risk of liver problems even more in people who take statins. Although liver problems are rare, your doctor will likely order a liver enzyme test before or shortly after you begin to take a statin. You shouldn't need any additional liver enzyme tests unless you begin to have signs or symptoms of trouble with your liver.
Avatar m tn I have already had one bad experience with another statin, Advicor, that resulted in me having permanent lymphedema in my ankles and legs. Now I am unsure about Niaspan. I would appreciate any comments on Niaspan please. Thanks.
Avatar m tn ”) in a week or so. I read what the side effects are on Niaspan and they are not good at all and I don’t need to go through all that now. He was about to add a new statin to that until he realized that he was giving me too much all at once-as he said later. New Statin down the road (A big Maybe on that one)? I am going to do exactly what I did the last time 2 years ago-sans the impastation-take fish oil omega 3 over the counter-the Dr.
Avatar n tn Well, it depends on what kind of medication you are on. I am taking Niaspan for cholestoral and these are the side effects of it. When your body have enough of these vitamins, it flushes out of body like this. It is advised by proffessionals to take an aspirin half an hour before taking Niaspan to avoid this flush. In my case, I simply stopped taking Niaspan and seek alternative from my doctor. It is always good to see doctor in such cases. I hope this is helpful to you.
Avatar m tn Not long after that it just came to me to research statins, and lo and behold I discovered a lot of people were having the same symptoms as me, so I decided to stop taking it. This Feb will be 3 years since I've taken it. And during that time I have gradually gotten better, but it still took quite a long time before I would stop having my fatigue like symptoms. I am pretty much 100% now, so it was obviously that medicine that was making me feel just dreadful.
Avatar n tn I assume you have a cholesterol issue. Why not ask your doctor for a prescription for a statin medicine? You can get the drug for $4.00 a month or less, and it's much less invasive than Niaspan, in my opinion. I tried Niaspan years ago, it wasn't effective, and I would get a huge 'blushing' feeling, my face would flush and I would be miserable. Statin drugs are very safe and in my opinion, very effective.
Avatar n tn I am Ricky7023. I'm sorry it took so long to get back to you. Either the system or I screwed up. I couldn't get back in under Ricky7023 (forgot the password, couldn't get the system to send me another). The drug in question is Niaspan and the person saying the study couldn't have shown a link between the drug and cancer was a cariologist who wanted to proscribe the niaspan. I don't know that any of that matters, of course.
Avatar m tn If you have diabetes or higher than normal blood sugar levels, you should carefully check your blood sugar levels, especially during the first few months of NIASPAN and during any change in your dose. Report any changes in your blood sugar levels to your health care professional. Hypothyroid (high TSH) has a huge effect on cholesterol levels. When your TSH gets back to normal your triglicerides should improve also. You could also ask for an A1C blood test.
Avatar m tn Unfortunately, besides niaspan, statins and fish oil, we do not have any other agents to raise HDL. You are on the maximum dose of niaspan also which is great! There are a few new agents which are being studied but likely won't be on the market for awhile. Make sure you are exercising 30-45 minutes 3-4x per week if possible because exercise helps raise HDL also. You will have to see if any of the stem cell trials whether you would qualify but it is worth looking into.
7052683 tn?1392938795 He was also on Niaspan and only gets the flushing. But he had to go down to every other day on Niaspan. So, you may have to do something like that. If you are on a very high dose of Niaspan then less common side effects can be fever, diarrhea, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, headache and rash. But my husband is on 500mg with no problem. I don't know what they consider a high dose. The Niaspan is only really for lowering your Triglycerides not the cholesterol.
Avatar m tn I'm new here and want to find out what people think about the new research on Niaspan. I can't figure out how to filter my search results by date so that I just get recent results.
Avatar m tn these are all good fats. and stay away from red meat. cheese and eggs only sometimes. any animal food has cholesterol in it. you need your triclycerides under 150. cutting out animal foods should help. eat lots of fruit and vegetables. you said you on a near zero oil diet, but you do need some good fats like the ones i mentioned above. they will help raise your hdl. and cutting out animal foods as much as possible will lower your tryclicerides.i hope this helps some.
Avatar n tn I have a closing carotid artery being treated by statins Crestor 10mg but I find the muscular pain associated with this and other statins unbearable. If I had the operation, which I will have to pay for, what am I buying? Time, a future without statins, or just more of the same¿?
Avatar m tn [12, 76, 78–84] Indeed, in both animal and human models, statins significantly lowered portal hypertension pressure and did not cause any untoward hemodynamic effects, thus improving hepatic perfusion. Moreover, when combined with nonselective beta blockers, the effects of statins were additive.[85, 86] The role of statins in preventing angiogenesis and inducing apoptosis has also been studied recently, perhaps presenting an opportunity for reducing the development of hepatocellular carcinoma.
