Niaspan and lipoprotein a

Common Questions and Answers about Niaspan and lipoprotein a

niaspan

Avatar m tn His reason is due to a recent study indicating Niaspan as a risk of causing bleeding and/or infection problems. I have already had one bad experience with another statin, Advicor, that resulted in me having permanent lymphedema in my ankles and legs. Now I am unsure about Niaspan. I would appreciate any comments on Niaspan please. Thanks.
Avatar n tn However, my lifestyle of consistent low fat diet and lots of excercise as an athlete, dont smoke, low BP does not seem to lower it any further. I then went to a lipidologist to do detailed blood work. They found lipoprotein a levels of 270mg/dl, HDL 72, LDLpart 1256, small LDL-Pnmol/L 560, Triglycerides 96, Total cholesterol 221. I have no family members with any obvious heart disease.
Avatar n tn I just had annual exam with new doctor and lipoprotein a is 34. Normal <30. Can you tell me what this means and how can I bring it down. my cholesterol numbers are excellent according to doctor: total cholesterol: 197 HDL: 74 Triglycerides: 58 LDL: 111 Ratio: 2.7 Cardio CRP: 1.
Avatar m tn I know that you're questioning Niaspan vs. liver. I wanted to also share with you a side effect of Niaspan is gout. If you never had it before, and start to more than likely it's the Niaspan that caused it. My husband was on Niaspan for a a couple of yrs. well, for the last yr. before discontinuing it, he kept getting flare-ups of gout. He started to get it more often than not.
Avatar m tn If you're gay or lesbian and had a heart attack at a young age plz reply. I'm scared and angry.
Avatar n tn Well, it depends on what kind of medication you are on. I am taking Niaspan for cholestoral and these are the side effects of it. When your body have enough of these vitamins, it flushes out of body like this. It is advised by proffessionals to take an aspirin half an hour before taking Niaspan to avoid this flush. In my case, I simply stopped taking Niaspan and seek alternative from my doctor. It is always good to see doctor in such cases. I hope this is helpful to you.
Avatar n tn I assume you have a cholesterol issue. Why not ask your doctor for a prescription for a statin medicine? You can get the drug for $4.00 a month or less, and it's much less invasive than Niaspan, in my opinion. I tried Niaspan years ago, it wasn't effective, and I would get a huge 'blushing' feeling, my face would flush and I would be miserable. Statin drugs are very safe and in my opinion, very effective.
Avatar n tn I am Ricky7023. I'm sorry it took so long to get back to you. Either the system or I screwed up. I couldn't get back in under Ricky7023 (forgot the password, couldn't get the system to send me another). The drug in question is Niaspan and the person saying the study couldn't have shown a link between the drug and cancer was a cariologist who wanted to proscribe the niaspan. I don't know that any of that matters, of course.
Avatar m tn ) Needless to say, my primary doctor nearly paniced and she immediately started me on Synthroid, 100 mcg, and referred me to a endocrinologist. He kept raising my dosages of Synthoid until is was alternating between 125 and 137 mcg's, with a TSH between .8 and 1.9. (He wanted me below 2.0). All my other levels were normal, including T3 and T4. This year, my heart doctor started me on Niaspan, since my Triglycerides were too high.
Avatar f tn Despite controling my diet and doing karate 3 hrs per week I have high cholesterol (287) and high triclyceride (250). I am at a lost and don't know how best to control it. At these levels I feel dizzy and lethargic. Please advise.
Avatar n tn I have been on 20 mg of simvastatin and 3000 mg niaspan now my ck levels have went from 60 to 295 i could hardly walk .will my levels come down if i lower dose. and reverse damage. i have 12 stents .the rest of my blood work is fine.
Avatar m tn What is the increased risk for thrombosis when taking birth control pills (Yaz) with elevated Lipoprotein (a) levels
7052683 tn?1392938795 He was also on Niaspan and only gets the flushing. But he had to go down to every other day on Niaspan. So, you may have to do something like that. If you are on a very high dose of Niaspan then less common side effects can be fever, diarrhea, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, headache and rash. But my husband is on 500mg with no problem. I don't know what they consider a high dose. The Niaspan is only really for lowering your Triglycerides not the cholesterol.
Avatar m tn I'm new here and want to find out what people think about the new research on Niaspan. I can't figure out how to filter my search results by date so that I just get recent results.
Avatar m tn cholesterol acyl transferase, while lipogenic enzymes showed decreased activities. An increased rate of cholesterol conversion to bile acid and an increased excretion of bile acids and neutral sterols were observed in rats fed coconut water. Histopathological studies of liver and aorta revealed much less fatty accumulation in these tissues in cholesterol-fed rats supplemented with coconut water.
Avatar n tn Currently I am on Tarka, Niaspan and Coumadin for HTN and atrial fibrillation. On 1/11, Sectral was added to my cardiac med profile to aid in arrythmia control. On 1/26 I started Lovenox prior to a colonoscopy. These are the only two meds changed, with all other meds longstanding. On 12/1 I had a complete metabolic profile drawn for a routine endocrinology follow up and LFTs then were ALT 17 and AST 18.
Avatar f tn It goes away after about 20 minutes but really was strange..Told my doctor about it and she said its a side effect of Niaspan a cholesterol reducing drug. I hope this helps some of you.
Avatar n tn I want to get HDL up and I exercise daily, eat fish twice a week, take Niaspan, and Krill oil. Thinking the Metoprolol is the issue. Just looking to see if anyone else has seen their HDL drop when put on Metoprolol. 25MG is low, was on 100MG... The cycling and exercising has allowed me to lower it. Can't come off of it because my heart rate will shoot up in on none.
Avatar m tn who is a heart specialist and has been around for a long time was given the ER results and after putting off my visit to him for a long time (ok I don’t like going to the doctor!) realized I needed blood tests done as I was feeling, and still am feeling, absolutely miserable. The results are as follows-just under 2 weeks ago-total cholesterol 199-not bad as it has been worse in the past..
1815939 tn?1377991799 Fasting cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL), high density lipoprotein and triglycerides were compared. Next was a retrospective cohort study (Treated Hepatitis C Group) of 87 treated hepatitis C patients with lipid data before and after therapy was performed. In the case-control analysis, the HCV Group had significantly lower LDL and cholesterol than the Uninfected Control Group.
Avatar m tn Low levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and raised triglycerides, affecting millions of patients worldwide, are strongly linked to significantly increased risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) even in patients who achieve or surpass current low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) targets.
Avatar m tn I take Niaspan which is an extended release form of niacin. Niaspan will decrease your LDL and triglycerides and increase your HDL. I would not change your niacin dose w/o talking to your doctor about it. Decreasing the dosage could decrease your HDL. I was taking 1500 mg of Niaspan at one point for about 7 months My HDL was around 42-44 for 3 measurements. It then drop to 32. My cardiologist immediately bumped my Nispan dosage to 2000 mg and my HDL went to 50 a year later.
Avatar n tn Hi, My husband is on a number of heart medications due to having a heart attack when he was in his late 20's (high lipoprotein a). He is well and his meds seem to suit him and do a great job of keeping him healthy. We want to start a family in the next year or two but are concenred about whether the meds he is on could affect his fertility. He is on daily aspirin, a beta blocker (carvedilol), a statin (pravastatin), ACE inhibitor (ramipril) and spironolactone.
Avatar f tn the low density lipoprotein (LDL) and the high density lipoprotein (HDL). The first one moves the cholesterol to the body cells while the second one brings it back to the liver. In case of high level of LDL, the particles will be moving in the blood around the body searching for cells that needs cholesterol, but because of the cells saturation, LDL will end up by “letting go” of the cholesterol molecules in the blood. These molecules should be taken by HDL to bring them back to the liver.
