Niaspan and joint pain

Common Questions and Answers about Niaspan and joint pain

niaspan

Avatar m tn Recently, my doctor suggested that he has successfully treated and eliminated fatty liver with Niaspan. I cannot find any literature on the matter. Niaspan will certainly address the low HDL. However, can you clarify whether (1) Niaspan would treat fatty liver and (2) is Niaspan's use contradicted with those diagnosed with fatty liver disease?
Avatar m tn I have already had one bad experience with another statin, Advicor, that resulted in me having permanent lymphedema in my ankles and legs. Now I am unsure about Niaspan. I would appreciate any comments on Niaspan please. Thanks.
Avatar n tn Well, it depends on what kind of medication you are on. I am taking Niaspan for cholestoral and these are the side effects of it. When your body have enough of these vitamins, it flushes out of body like this. It is advised by proffessionals to take an aspirin half an hour before taking Niaspan to avoid this flush. In my case, I simply stopped taking Niaspan and seek alternative from my doctor. It is always good to see doctor in such cases. I hope this is helpful to you.
Avatar n tn I assume you have a cholesterol issue. Why not ask your doctor for a prescription for a statin medicine? You can get the drug for $4.00 a month or less, and it's much less invasive than Niaspan, in my opinion. I tried Niaspan years ago, it wasn't effective, and I would get a huge 'blushing' feeling, my face would flush and I would be miserable. Statin drugs are very safe and in my opinion, very effective.
Avatar n tn I am Ricky7023. I'm sorry it took so long to get back to you. Either the system or I screwed up. I couldn't get back in under Ricky7023 (forgot the password, couldn't get the system to send me another). The drug in question is Niaspan and the person saying the study couldn't have shown a link between the drug and cancer was a cariologist who wanted to proscribe the niaspan. I don't know that any of that matters, of course.
Avatar m tn If you have diabetes or higher than normal blood sugar levels, you should carefully check your blood sugar levels, especially during the first few months of NIASPAN and during any change in your dose. Report any changes in your blood sugar levels to your health care professional. Hypothyroid (high TSH) has a huge effect on cholesterol levels. When your TSH gets back to normal your triglicerides should improve also. You could also ask for an A1C blood test.
Avatar n tn I recently started Niaspan 500mg for high cholesterol and angina. I take it at night. On the 3rd night I woke at 4.30am feeling like my whole body was on fire, particularly my head and back of my neck. I couldn't stand the sheets on me, they felt like sandpaper. After an hour or so it went away. Could this be some reaction to the Niacin. It scared me badly. I am 71, also take valium.
Avatar n tn I have been on 20 mg of simvastatin and 3000 mg niaspan now my ck levels have went from 60 to 295 i could hardly walk .will my levels come down if i lower dose. and reverse damage. i have 12 stents .the rest of my blood work is fine.
Avatar m tn Does flushing also include splotchy and prickly? I get flushed with my hot flashes. I was just wondering if Harry's having a mild allergic reaction to one of the meds. Harry - if you start to puff up or have trouble with your throat or breathing, call the doctor right away. Just watching out for you.
7052683 tn?1392938795 He was also on Niaspan and only gets the flushing. But he had to go down to every other day on Niaspan. So, you may have to do something like that. If you are on a very high dose of Niaspan then less common side effects can be fever, diarrhea, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, headache and rash. But my husband is on 500mg with no problem. I don't know what they consider a high dose. The Niaspan is only really for lowering your Triglycerides not the cholesterol.
Avatar n tn Crestor is an atypical statin in that it raises the HDL by 5-10%, but more importantly decreases through pleomorphic effects the crp level, There is some data that increasing HDL with Niaspan and gemfibrozil in men decreases mortallity if their initial HDL is below 35-40. I would probably start a statin, and see what happens to your ldl and hdl. If the hdl remains low, then I would add gemfibrozil to raise it ( since Niaspan did not work).
Avatar m tn I'm new here and want to find out what people think about the new research on Niaspan. I can't figure out how to filter my search results by date so that I just get recent results.
Avatar n tn Currently I am on Tarka, Niaspan and Coumadin for HTN and atrial fibrillation. On 1/11, Sectral was added to my cardiac med profile to aid in arrythmia control. On 1/26 I started Lovenox prior to a colonoscopy. These are the only two meds changed, with all other meds longstanding. On 12/1 I had a complete metabolic profile drawn for a routine endocrinology follow up and LFTs then were ALT 17 and AST 18.
Avatar f tn It goes away after about 20 minutes but really was strange..Told my doctor about it and she said its a side effect of Niaspan a cholesterol reducing drug. I hope this helps some of you.
Avatar n tn I want to get HDL up and I exercise daily, eat fish twice a week, take Niaspan, and Krill oil. Thinking the Metoprolol is the issue. Just looking to see if anyone else has seen their HDL drop when put on Metoprolol. 25MG is low, was on 100MG... The cycling and exercising has allowed me to lower it. Can't come off of it because my heart rate will shoot up in on none.
Avatar m tn ”) in a week or so. I read what the side effects are on Niaspan and they are not good at all and I don’t need to go through all that now. He was about to add a new statin to that until he realized that he was giving me too much all at once-as he said later. New Statin down the road (A big Maybe on that one)? I am going to do exactly what I did the last time 2 years ago-sans the impastation-take fish oil omega 3 over the counter-the Dr.
Avatar m tn I take Niaspan which is an extended release form of niacin. Niaspan will decrease your LDL and triglycerides and increase your HDL. I would not change your niacin dose w/o talking to your doctor about it. Decreasing the dosage could decrease your HDL. I was taking 1500 mg of Niaspan at one point for about 7 months My HDL was around 42-44 for 3 measurements. It then drop to 32. My cardiologist immediately bumped my Nispan dosage to 2000 mg and my HDL went to 50 a year later.
Avatar m tn Unfortunately, besides niaspan, statins and fish oil, we do not have any other agents to raise HDL. You are on the maximum dose of niaspan also which is great! There are a few new agents which are being studied but likely won't be on the market for awhile. Make sure you are exercising 30-45 minutes 3-4x per week if possible because exercise helps raise HDL also. You will have to see if any of the stem cell trials whether you would qualify but it is worth looking into.
Avatar n tn I only had stage 1 fibrosis and elected not to take Niaspan (prescription Niacin). I was going to take this to lower my cholesterol but changed my mind at last minute. Most lipid meds are bad for the liver.
Avatar n tn After a while the noises and joint pain may go away, but the joint continues to undergo damage. It just becomes quiet and the pain gets transmitted to the other parts of the head. The patient who experiences once a month headaches, along with a poppin joint, eventually becomes the twice a week headache patient with no joint noises. Vision: The trigeminal nerve is responding to a muscle and jaw joint compression by irritation of its maxillary/opthalmic division.
Avatar n tn I have hypertension and 5 days ago I had a heart cath procedure. They found two arteries bocked 40%. Decided no need to do anything at present time. I have always kept my B/P around 130/ 70 with medication. Since the heart cath. it has been high even with meds. and I have a terrible heart flutter. Now B/P is averaging between 189/92 to 182/ 85 I am worried. That something maybe wrong after the Heart Catharization.
Avatar n tn The Fenofibrate can cause bloating indigestion, stomach pain, and increased liver enzymes or liver problems in addition to other side effects. The Zetia can cause some of these too. Have they tested your liver enzymes yet? If so were they normal? There are other drugs for lowering cholesterol and triglycerides that work as well. You can ask him to have you try Lipitor (generic) and there is now a generic Niaspan. I know because my husband is on it.
Avatar m tn Also I take allergy medication like zyrtec (1 a day). and 2000 mg of Niaspan. Does any of these have any effect on antibody test. I was a bit relaxed after I got my result but tensed once again after reading your post on cortisone injection, i read a similar one on thebody stating heavy does of cortisone can effect the antibody production. Does cortisone suppress the immune system which delays the production of antibodies? Please help, I am very scared.
507935 tn?1217359454 When I came off it, my joint pain returned and my rheumy said that was normal and was 'probably' a side effect from the withdrawl. He said it should go away a few weeks after being totally off the pred. I hope this is true for you.
Avatar n tn In an effort to increase my HDL, I take Niaspan & Zocor.....Recently my MD upped the Zocor from 5mgl. to 10mgl.... Last couple weeks, have had more trouble sleeping, usually waking up after a dream (not nightmares, but somewhat vivid dreams)...I've checked out few sites, & saw that statins can cause sleep problems....Have others here had sleep problems while taking a statin?........
730053 tn?1234534651 (heart attack like) nausea, shortness of breath, chest pain, dizziness, headache, confusion, cold extremities, high and low BP, fatigue. BP at time of admission to the hospital averaged 140/70, HR 60-70, ECG showed MI and an elevated ST. I had been complaining to my cardiologist about these symptoms since the end of November (One month following left artery stent placement).
Avatar f tn My throat closed. I got steroids and the hives got better. Then the joint pain kicked in. My hands and right shoulder were so painful I couldn't use/move them. The symptoms would go away and return (the joint pain not hives). My shoulder hasn't bothered me lately but my hands and fingers still hurt. Did this happen to anyone and can you offer any advice? Thanks.
Avatar f tn I have joint pain in my knees and elbows, weakness in knees after kneeling down and trying to stand up. I have numbness that comes and goes in my feet. My chemo/raidiation treatments ended a year ago. Are these aches and pains caused by the after effects of the drugs and radiation? I also have trouble taking antibiotics or pain meds. I seems to get every side effect listed. Alcohol of any type bothers me also. I use to enjoy a glass of wine but no longer.
