Niaspan and blood sugar

Common Questions and Answers about Niaspan and blood sugar

niaspan

Avatar m tn If you have diabetes or higher than normal blood sugar levels, you should carefully check your blood sugar levels, especially during the first few months of NIASPAN and during any change in your dose. Report any changes in your blood sugar levels to your health care professional. Hypothyroid (high TSH) has a huge effect on cholesterol levels. When your TSH gets back to normal your triglicerides should improve also. You could also ask for an A1C blood test.
Avatar n tn I have been on 20 mg of simvastatin and 3000 mg niaspan now my ck levels have went from 60 to 295 i could hardly walk .will my levels come down if i lower dose. and reverse damage. i have 12 stents .the rest of my blood work is fine.
Avatar m tn Recently, my doctor suggested that he has successfully treated and eliminated fatty liver with Niaspan. I cannot find any literature on the matter. Niaspan will certainly address the low HDL. However, can you clarify whether (1) Niaspan would treat fatty liver and (2) is Niaspan's use contradicted with those diagnosed with fatty liver disease?
Avatar n tn I recently started Niaspan 500mg for high cholesterol and angina. I take it at night. On the 3rd night I woke at 4.30am feeling like my whole body was on fire, particularly my head and back of my neck. I couldn't stand the sheets on me, they felt like sandpaper. After an hour or so it went away. Could this be some reaction to the Niacin. It scared me badly. I am 71, also take valium.
Avatar m tn I have already had one bad experience with another statin, Advicor, that resulted in me having permanent lymphedema in my ankles and legs. Now I am unsure about Niaspan. I would appreciate any comments on Niaspan please. Thanks.
Avatar m tn Just so you know, on the maximal amount of Coreg and Lisinopril that your heart rate and blood pressure can handle, the heart muscle can get stronger and we can see the EF improve!!! I think you may have 15 years left to your heart but you need to be very careful and take all of your medications (never stop plavix again with all of the stents you have) as prescribed and continue exercising at least 30 min 3-4x per week.
Avatar n tn Well, it depends on what kind of medication you are on. I am taking Niaspan for cholestoral and these are the side effects of it. When your body have enough of these vitamins, it flushes out of body like this. It is advised by proffessionals to take an aspirin half an hour before taking Niaspan to avoid this flush. In my case, I simply stopped taking Niaspan and seek alternative from my doctor. It is always good to see doctor in such cases. I hope this is helpful to you.
Avatar f tn I have been reading everyone skin problems and I guess I'm not alone. Mine started about 3 yrs ago and it's not getting any better. I have been to every doctor and had all kinds of blood work. They look at me like I'm crazy. My skin itches from inside, no signs on the outside. Under my breasts it feel like a burning almost like a sunburb would. My eyes always burn. No pill seems to help.My skin gets like little pricks let something is biting me. No I don't have bugs....
Avatar m tn you have the typical pattern of a high-carb intake, perhaps especially sugar. High triglycerides can suppress HDL, and are associated with high VLDL. Also, high carb and low fat is what causes the preponderance of small dense LDL. The wine might help raise HDL a little bit, but will raise triglycerides even more. I'd ditch it, even though moderate alcohol is generally cardioprotective for most others.
7052683 tn?1392938795 He was also on Niaspan and only gets the flushing. But he had to go down to every other day on Niaspan. So, you may have to do something like that. If you are on a very high dose of Niaspan then less common side effects can be fever, diarrhea, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, headache and rash. But my husband is on 500mg with no problem. I don't know what they consider a high dose. The Niaspan is only really for lowering your Triglycerides not the cholesterol.
Avatar n tn Currently I am on Tarka, Niaspan and Coumadin for HTN and atrial fibrillation. On 1/11, Sectral was added to my cardiac med profile to aid in arrythmia control. On 1/26 I started Lovenox prior to a colonoscopy. These are the only two meds changed, with all other meds longstanding. On 12/1 I had a complete metabolic profile drawn for a routine endocrinology follow up and LFTs then were ALT 17 and AST 18.
Avatar n tn I assume you have a cholesterol issue. Why not ask your doctor for a prescription for a statin medicine? You can get the drug for $4.00 a month or less, and it's much less invasive than Niaspan, in my opinion. I tried Niaspan years ago, it wasn't effective, and I would get a huge 'blushing' feeling, my face would flush and I would be miserable. Statin drugs are very safe and in my opinion, very effective.
Avatar m tn I recently got my blood tests back and am not sure if I have "Heart Disease" in the classical meaning of the phrase or just a bad reading or "Bad Numbers" which need to be addressed. Can someone please clarify this for me? First off, I'm a recently turned 60 year old man who used to be an athletic type during my younger years and over the years let it all go down the drain it seems.
Avatar n tn I am Ricky7023. I'm sorry it took so long to get back to you. Either the system or I screwed up. I couldn't get back in under Ricky7023 (forgot the password, couldn't get the system to send me another). The drug in question is Niaspan and the person saying the study couldn't have shown a link between the drug and cancer was a cariologist who wanted to proscribe the niaspan. I don't know that any of that matters, of course.
Avatar n tn I want to get HDL up and I exercise daily, eat fish twice a week, take Niaspan, and Krill oil. Thinking the Metoprolol is the issue. Just looking to see if anyone else has seen their HDL drop when put on Metoprolol. 25MG is low, was on 100MG... The cycling and exercising has allowed me to lower it. Can't come off of it because my heart rate will shoot up in on none.
Avatar m tn I'm new here and want to find out what people think about the new research on Niaspan. I can't figure out how to filter my search results by date so that I just get recent results.
Avatar m tn I take Niaspan which is an extended release form of niacin. Niaspan will decrease your LDL and triglycerides and increase your HDL. I would not change your niacin dose w/o talking to your doctor about it. Decreasing the dosage could decrease your HDL. I was taking 1500 mg of Niaspan at one point for about 7 months My HDL was around 42-44 for 3 measurements. It then drop to 32. My cardiologist immediately bumped my Nispan dosage to 2000 mg and my HDL went to 50 a year later.
Avatar m tn Does flushing also include splotchy and prickly? I get flushed with my hot flashes. I was just wondering if Harry's having a mild allergic reaction to one of the meds. Harry - if you start to puff up or have trouble with your throat or breathing, call the doctor right away. Just watching out for you.
Avatar m tn Are you eating things like bread? Last year, I had to cut back on my carbs to lower my blood sugar. It also lower my triglycerides and I also lost weight as well (30 lbs over 9 months). I had to avoid certain vegetables like corn and potatoes. I also had to watch my portion sizes and switch to multigrain breads. My fiber, both soluble and insoluble, consumption has been high as well.
Avatar n tn Crestor is an atypical statin in that it raises the HDL by 5-10%, but more importantly decreases through pleomorphic effects the crp level, There is some data that increasing HDL with Niaspan and gemfibrozil in men decreases mortallity if their initial HDL is below 35-40. I would probably start a statin, and see what happens to your ldl and hdl. If the hdl remains low, then I would add gemfibrozil to raise it ( since Niaspan did not work).
Avatar f tn 225 was high so in morning i went to lab with gluco meter and they picked blood from vein and tested on gluco meter ist it was 103 and in lab 87.lab technician told me that go home eat drink tea with sugar and come back after two hours.i did it and went to lab and result was 80.i went to my doc who is not a specialist in diabetes said do hba1c and result was 5.5.he said moniter your bs for 2 3 days last night i checked after one and half hour after dinner and glucometer reading was 248.

Avatar f tn Does blood sugar gets higher as u progress in ur pregnancy?
7631083 tn?1394352887 For the past week or so there has been a couple of times where I feel very weak and my hands start to shake. I know it means my blood sugar is low so I will try to hurry up and eat something. Its sometimes when I first wake up and there are times when its in the middle to late at night. I'm 36 weeks and 4 days. I should probably tell my doctor when I go in on Friday or should I be more worried about it and do something now?
Avatar n tn i have 121 sugar fasting how i controlled and avoid this problem please i am depression from last long time and always in tension
Avatar n tn Hello, Definitely your blood sugar levels are raised. First of you need to start exercising and do brisk wals for atleast 45 min per day. A diet that includes fruits, vegetables, fiber-containing foods, and low-fat milk is advised. Consumption of foods with a low glucose levels appears to reduce postprandial glucose rise and improve glycemic control. Reduced calorie and nonnutritive sweeteners are useful.
Avatar n tn I tested my blood sugar this morning and it was 105. Would you say this is out of the normal range. I had blood work done about a month ago when I had my annual physical and my sugar level came back at 109. My doctor didn't seem to alarmed.
