niaspan

Avatar n tn s cholesterol used to clock in at about 270 and he had the same reservations as your husband about drugs - niacin has worked very well for him - his cholesterol is now sub 150 and has been for 10+ years). You could say that extended release niacin is sort of a drug in itself but btw that and a statin I'd personally try the niacin first.
Avatar f tn Hello, I have recently heard that Niacin is good for lowering cholesterol. Anyone have any experience with this?
Avatar n tn A low fat/low cholesterol diet will lower your HDL but will also lower your LDL big time..its the ratio of HDL to LDL that's most important. My LDL before I started the niaspan and diet was over 100 and my total was 185 or so. In 6 weeks I have went down to the numbers you see in my first post. My trigs were at 144 and are now in the low 80's.
Avatar f tn Hi, I had a blood draw in April of 2009 and all of my numbers were perfect accept for my cholesterol was a little high. I was told from friends that Niacin helps as well as fish oil. So, over the past 8 mths I took Niacin and fish oil and my new blood draw cam up with a perfect score in the cholesterol area but my Bilirubin total was elevated at 1.4, Iron UIBC low at 102, Iron serum high at 175 as well as Iron Saturation at 63, and my biggest concern was my TSH high at 5.08.
Avatar f tn Did you have a question on adult type 2 diabetes?
Avatar f tn I've read conflicting articles saying that niacin is necessary for thyroid function and then some that say it can lower thyroid levels and cause liver damage. I've seen it in some iron supplements and wondered if I needed to stay away from it or if it would be good to take.
Avatar n tn I understand your concern, but after much research concerning the side effects of statins meds, PVC's are not a listed side effect. In fact, statin use has been studied in exercise induced PVC trials and have been shown to reduce the incidence of PVCs due to exercise so it would stand to reason that they also do not affect normal heart rhythm. Having said that, your PVCs may be anxiety related to statin use.
1135275 tn?1586565652 Niacin is toxic in too high a dose. Niacinamide isn't, and so that's usually used for mental health purposes, but it doesn't yield a lot of niacin. Niacin will also give you a hot flush on your skin, unless you buy a non-flush niacin, which is usually, again, niacinamide. Niacin is usually used for the heart.
Avatar m tn You can consume alcohol and spicy foods apart from your use of niacinfor example, having a glass of wine at 7 p.m. and then taking niacin at 9 p.m. Only a few people will have more flushing due to the combination.
Avatar m tn There is also niacin (look for non flush niacin) and L-carnitine. And of course look at your diet. You can check out what to eat and avoid on this article from Authority Nutrition: A Paleo Diet Meal Plan and Menu That Can Save Your Life. After a bad diet, hypothyroidism is the second most common cause of elevated cholesterol. Genetics is under 1% of cases. It's worth trying out some natural methods first. Statins have a list of side effects a mile long. *** "...
Avatar m tn niacin is the cheapest sure way to lower cholesterol, and red yeast rice extract. eggs typically should NOT raise cholesterol. what does mostly is too many calories, and flours, white rice, pastries, etc. also calorie dense foods like cheese can do it. too much coke, pop, can do it. clean up any of these if applicable, and try the above nutrients if you desire. i'd see a naturopath for cholesterol myself, if it's a persistent issue.
Avatar f tn From the Mayo Clinic; >>>>>>Niacin can raise HDL — the "good" cholesterol — by 15 to 35 percent. This makes niacin the most effective drug available for raising HDL cholesterol. While niacin's effect on HDL is of most interest, it's worth noting that niacin also decreases your LDL and triglyceride levels. High levels of LDL and triglycerides are significant risk factors for heart disease.
Avatar m tn If you want to lower your triglycerides, try taking Carlson Lemon Flavored Fish oil, a tablespoon twice a day, this will help to lower it, and is also good for any inflammation in the veins and arteries. Also, try Niacin, this has been known to help too. Kamy, I do not know what 2.05 would be if converted, I am used to seeing it the other way.
Avatar f tn The reason the doctor asked you to lower the thyroid medication is that Niacin will after time affect your T3 T4 levels. Even without any symptoms. So best to do as the doctor says. I presume you have high cholesterol and that is why you are on the Niacin?
Avatar m tn You could also ask about fibrates of fenofibrates which work in your intestines to help control the absorption of cholesterol. Niacin does not really do much to lower cholesterol. It increases HDL which is used to remove LDL from your system, however recent studies have found that HDL created by niacin use is not as effective as naturally occurring HDL particles. Can you tell me what your lipid profile is? Perhaps I can point you in the right direction with more information.
Avatar m tn One way to lower your cholesterol, an raise the good cholesterol is to take Red Yeast Rice, and Slo- Niacin. I had stopped taking the Lipitor, 80mg a day, and did not tell my doctor. My lab results came back better than ever, my HDL had never been above 40 and it was 46. I had tried everything prior to this and this is what works for me, so if you are interested, I get them both at Walgreens and Usually you can find the Red Yeast Rice on sale.

Avatar n tn HI, My Doctor has prescribed me tto take Teva-rosuvastatin tablets for 3 months to help lower my cholesterol. I have heard that once you start on these type of drugs you will be on them for life. I am worried i will not be able to stop taking this pill once i start. I am only 39 years old. and dont want to be taking a pill every day for the rest of my life. Is there not a way through diet and exercise to lower cholesterol. It seems Doctors are all to quick to prescribe pills these days.
Avatar m tn valve replacement 2001, redid bypasses. I was on 40mg Lipitor and 500mg no-flush niacin for a number of years with moderate sucess. I subscribe to the Cleveland Clinic Heart Newsletter. In the July 2007 issue there was suggestion that 1,500mg niacin was a good statin supplement. Starting in July 2007 I followed this suggestion, taking 1,500mg slow-release niacin with the Lipitor. I have biannual blood tests.
Avatar m tn HDL is considered the good cholesterol while the LDL is considered the bad cholesterol. Your LDL cholesterol is at an appropriate range given your risk factors although we often try to get it even lower in patients with known heart disease. Your HDL is slightly low. Most people with LDL cholesterol at your level will have a similar HDL.
Avatar f tn Niacin is also known to lower cholesterol Usually taken at night before bed as your liver produces most of the cholesterol at night. I was able to lower my cholesterol by taking 500 Mg of Niacin (non flushing) at night. It actually had a larger effect lowering it than did the first Dr. prescribed statin to control cholesterol. Please find out whether your lab results are FREE T3 & Free T4. They sort of appear to be Total and not free numbers.
