Common Questions and Answers about Niacin and thyroid medicine

niaspan

Avatar f tn His early work led to the use of niacin for schizophrenia and as an cholesterol treatment. Dr. Hoffer died in 2009 at the age of 91, but he successfully treated many thousands of patients with high dose niacin for psychotic disorders. He presented some very compelling evidence to support treating most psychotic disorders as a vitamin B3 deficiency.
Avatar m tn I had tried everything prior to this and this is what works for me, so if you are interested, I get them both at Walgreens and Usually you can find the Red Yeast Rice on sale. I take two in the AM, and two in the PM, and the Slo-Niacin I take the 750mg., 1/2 in the AM, and 1/2 in the PM.
Avatar f tn I have never heard of niacin affecting the body in a bad way especially pertaining to the liver and thyroid.
Avatar f tn I've read conflicting articles saying that niacin is necessary for thyroid function and then some that say it can lower thyroid levels and cause liver damage. I've seen it in some iron supplements and wondered if I needed to stay away from it or if it would be good to take.
Avatar f tn Niacin in most people causes the face to flush/blush. No flush Niacin is readily available OTC. A word of caution, however, Niacin is a B3 and B3's are known to elevate blood sugars. Test your bs often and on a regular basis.
Avatar f tn Thyroid disease can cause high cholesterol. I have Hashimoto's with nodules, and I work hard to keep it cholesterol in check. You should get your TSH, FT3, FT4 and TGab TPOab blood work to determine if you have thyroid disease. There is medication that can treat it.
Avatar f tn The reason the doctor asked you to lower the thyroid medication is that Niacin will after time affect your T3 T4 levels. Even without any symptoms. So best to do as the doctor says. I presume you have high cholesterol and that is why you are on the Niacin?
Avatar f tn Thanks. Hormones and thyroid were both investigated, but apparently neither was the problem. I see my internist next week, though, so we'll revisit the issue. I appreciate your help and interest. Best wishes to you.
Avatar n tn Believe it or not, I am taking 5 Niacin tablets in the morning and 5 at night for high trigylcerides. I can't remember the strength, but this is what is oredered by my doctor. In addition to that of course I have to take a statin and Tricor. Good news is that Tricor will have a generic out in May. I was also told by my pharmicist that Plavix has a generic coming out in July. Ask your pharmicist if there is a generic of Niaspan due out any time soon.
1323747 tn?1364806882 I have tried lowering the aspirin to 162 mg. and am still noting bruising and now am getting a rash from the niacin. Seems like a catch 22.
Avatar m tn I want to change the medicine. Can changing medicine (beta blocker) to some alpha receptor blocker, ACE inhibitors, receptor blockers possible?would transition be smooth? Please help me in changing my medicine .
Avatar f tn Many diabetic clinics provide such testing for free. You might try some alpha-lipoic acid, 1000 mg of omega-3 fish oil, and some slow release niacin. The niacin improves the microcirculation, as does the omega-3 fish oil. If you are paying cash and specify you only want an hba1c and a fasting glucose test it shouldn't be very expensive. To evaluate the thyroid a test known as a TSH is required. This is also inexpensive.
Avatar m tn There is also niacin (look for non flush niacin) and L-carnitine. And of course look at your diet. You can check out what to eat and avoid on this article from Authority Nutrition: A Paleo Diet Meal Plan and Menu That Can Save Your Life. After a bad diet, hypothyroidism is the second most common cause of elevated cholesterol. Genetics is under 1% of cases. It's worth trying out some natural methods first. Statins have a list of side effects a mile long. *** "...
Avatar n tn There are two types of hypothyroid. Hoshimotos hypo is forever and diagnosed with antibody testing. 'Standard' hypothyroid does not involve antibodies tearing apart the thyroid gland, Hashis does. Sometimes regular hypothyroid goes away. It can be temporarily caused by adverse stress or infection ect, as the thyroid is extremely fragile. Since you are female, I'm sure you heard of women having temporary hypo after child birth. Sometimes it stays, sometimes not.
Avatar f tn 1)Permanent Hypothyroidisim : The disease is called Hoshimotos and is forever. Its caused by antibodies attacking the thyroid. In this case meds are increased as the thyroid dies off more. In the beginning of Hoshimotos disease you can flip flop from hypo to hyper to normal for periods before you gradually go hypo. Does not happen to all. This is diagnosed from two antibody tests. Did she have these tests?
1006041 tn?1250396768 I am a 35 year old and have found out within the last year that I am allergic to cholesterol medicine. When I take just one pill my liver enzymes go up. This has been determined at two numerous hospital stays, infact, doctors didnt believe the previous diagnosis of an allergic reaction and gave me the meds to see for themselves. I have chronic pancreatitis and have gotten sick several times from high lipid count due to my cholesterol.
Avatar f tn if you can try the slo release formula and make sure you take with food.. I use and research a lot of alternate treatments.. Niacin has the propensity to flare up causing those exacerbated feelings also your scalp may feel like its on fire too.. You should be ok and if it doesn't go away seek medical treatment ..
Avatar n tn my total cholestrol is 160 and my dr said simvastain 20mg ... I collected my medicine and they gave me 40mg which seems really high as I have never taken this before???
Avatar n tn meds too, The other thing that may show a connection to reflux and thyroid is the symptom of muscle aches and spasms, and the valve (Sphincter) that connects the esophagus to the stomache is supposed to keep the stomach acids from backing up into the esophagus is a muscle, so that could be a connection, this is the problem with BP meds, The muscle becomes relaxed and does not close all the way, then you get the acid back-up. Just a Hunch.
Avatar m tn If you want to lower your triglycerides, try taking Carlson Lemon Flavored Fish oil, a tablespoon twice a day, this will help to lower it, and is also good for any inflammation in the veins and arteries. Also, try Niacin, this has been known to help too. Kamy, I do not know what 2.05 would be if converted, I am used to seeing it the other way.
415098 tn?1214856836 I went and got my blood drawn and my tsh was .10 so they lowered my medicine to .125 it used to be .
Avatar n tn I now take my meds which are Tricor and Pravastatin. But in addition to those I take 500mg of Niacin in the morning and again in the evening. He needs to get that number down because I have had multiple heart attacks from the plaque in my blood. And that comes from the high levels of triglycerides in the blood. That is the fat that causes the plaque to form. The Niacin is a good supplement in treating this.
Avatar f tn I have had thyroid problems for 4 years, my medicine has been changed 18 times and it is still not regulated. I am very frustrated with being tired all the time and gaining weight. Is it normal to take this long to find a dosage that helps ?!
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with pcos last year we'll they put me on different meds to help control it including thyroid medicine. I've been off of it for 2 weeks because of being sick (which last week I found out it was morning sickness cuz that's when I found out I was pregnant) and my levels have gone up. I have to get back on my medicine and was wondering if anyone else is taking it while pregnant? I know my doctor wouldn't have given me the go ahead if it would harm the baby.
Avatar f tn you need to see a nutritionist for a diet plan to try to control it through diet and exercise (pretty much eat a lot of whole grains and vegetables and cut WAAAAY back on red meat and cut out trans fat as completely as possible). The Neutrophils and Lymphs are part of the WBC differential...I would like to see that ENTIRE differential and the total WBC count. That said, your Neutrophils look a tad low while the Lymphocytes are high which indicates some type of infection.
