Common Questions and Answers about Niacin and thyroid

niaspan

Avatar f tn I have never heard of niacin affecting the body in a bad way especially pertaining to the liver and thyroid.
Avatar f tn I've read conflicting articles saying that niacin is necessary for thyroid function and then some that say it can lower thyroid levels and cause liver damage. I've seen it in some iron supplements and wondered if I needed to stay away from it or if it would be good to take.
Avatar f tn Thyroid disease can cause high cholesterol. I have Hashimoto's with nodules, and I work hard to keep it cholesterol in check. You should get your TSH, FT3, FT4 and TGab TPOab blood work to determine if you have thyroid disease. There is medication that can treat it.
Avatar f tn The reason the doctor asked you to lower the thyroid medication is that Niacin will after time affect your T3 T4 levels. Even without any symptoms. So best to do as the doctor says. I presume you have high cholesterol and that is why you are on the Niacin?
Avatar f tn Thanks. Hormones and thyroid were both investigated, but apparently neither was the problem. I see my internist next week, though, so we'll revisit the issue. I appreciate your help and interest. Best wishes to you.
1323747 tn?1364806882 I have tried lowering the aspirin to 162 mg. and am still noting bruising and now am getting a rash from the niacin. Seems like a catch 22.
Avatar f tn Many diabetic clinics provide such testing for free. You might try some alpha-lipoic acid, 1000 mg of omega-3 fish oil, and some slow release niacin. The niacin improves the microcirculation, as does the omega-3 fish oil. If you are paying cash and specify you only want an hba1c and a fasting glucose test it shouldn't be very expensive. To evaluate the thyroid a test known as a TSH is required. This is also inexpensive.
Avatar m tn There is also niacin (look for non flush niacin) and L-carnitine. And of course look at your diet. You can check out what to eat and avoid on this article from Authority Nutrition: A Paleo Diet Meal Plan and Menu That Can Save Your Life. After a bad diet, hypothyroidism is the second most common cause of elevated cholesterol. Genetics is under 1% of cases. It's worth trying out some natural methods first. Statins have a list of side effects a mile long. *** "...
Avatar f tn if you can try the slo release formula and make sure you take with food.. I use and research a lot of alternate treatments.. Niacin has the propensity to flare up causing those exacerbated feelings also your scalp may feel like its on fire too.. You should be ok and if it doesn't go away seek medical treatment ..
Avatar m tn If you want to lower your triglycerides, try taking Carlson Lemon Flavored Fish oil, a tablespoon twice a day, this will help to lower it, and is also good for any inflammation in the veins and arteries. Also, try Niacin, this has been known to help too. Kamy, I do not know what 2.05 would be if converted, I am used to seeing it the other way.
Avatar f tn you need to see a nutritionist for a diet plan to try to control it through diet and exercise (pretty much eat a lot of whole grains and vegetables and cut WAAAAY back on red meat and cut out trans fat as completely as possible). The Neutrophils and Lymphs are part of the WBC differential...I would like to see that ENTIRE differential and the total WBC count. That said, your Neutrophils look a tad low while the Lymphocytes are high which indicates some type of infection.

479244 tn?1271563659 (uh oh) Anyway, I checked and found that someone with liver disease (I have mild inflamation and no fibrosis) should not take over 35 mgs. of niacin per day. This stuff I bought at the drug store has 25 mgs. of niacin. Is is all they had , but I am thinking about returning it. IYO - is it safe for me to take this or should I return and look for plain ol B12 liquid.
475570 tn?1280941363 I just want to add that this was a study of Niaspan - the time release version of Niacin - and not Niacin.
1202943 tn?1347840652 I know shrimp is high in iodine and maybe eggs and dairy too. I think I might have had too much iodine and caused my thyroid levels to spike. I guess I will try to avoid seafood for awhile. I've been trying to eat healthy and it's backfired. Soo annoying! I'm not supposed to get my thyroid levels checked for 6 more weeks, if it happens again I'm calling my DR.
Avatar n tn Since my July 1000 reading, I stopped the statin and niacin for two weeks and was going on a 2 week vacation overseas. I returned on a sunday and had a stiff /sore neck for 2 days prior to coming come and a full body massage hours before leaving, and an uncomfortable 16 hour direct flight home...my cpk on drawing 3 days after my return, was 3888. Aldolase was 26. Only symptoms was the syiff neck...liitle better, but still there. Repeat cpk a day later was 3400. Normal thyroid tests.
Avatar f tn His early work led to the use of niacin for schizophrenia and as an cholesterol treatment. Dr. Hoffer died in 2009 at the age of 91, but he successfully treated many thousands of patients with high dose niacin for psychotic disorders. He presented some very compelling evidence to support treating most psychotic disorders as a vitamin B3 deficiency.
Avatar f tn Did you have a question on adult type 2 diabetes?
Avatar m tn Call it mind over matter or whatever but I started taking Niacin and inositol last week. I have felt a steady improvement in my mood and anxiety levels each day. I have been taking a B Complex, 100 mg everyday for the past 2 months. The Niacin I take is 400 mg so that is a 500 mg/day dose. Yesterday I bumped up to 400 mg in the AM and 400 at night. There is definely an improvement that I feel. i am not 100% yet but I feel better than I did a week ago.
Avatar f tn Niacin in most people causes the face to flush/blush. No flush Niacin is readily available OTC. A word of caution, however, Niacin is a B3 and B3's are known to elevate blood sugars. Test your bs often and on a regular basis.
Avatar n tn using statin drugs) because Niacin also raises HDL and cuts LPa and triglycerides (while statins only cut LDL). I have been on this regimen since 2003 and the effect on my cholesterol/triglycerides and LPa has been more than as hoped for. Just as with statin drugs, it is necessary to get regular blood tests (ideally every 6 months) to ensure there is no liver damage.
Avatar m tn 3 oz, 7.8 mg Daily Value: 49% Just under 50 percent of the day’s niacin in a three-ounce serving. Tuna Packed in Water, Niacin Content: 3 oz, 8.6 mg Daily Value: 54% Canned tuna is the best source of niacin, and it’s packed with docosahexaenoic acid, a type of omega-3 that stunts the growth of belly fat cell. Canned chunk tuna is considered a “low mercury fish” enjoy two to three times a week, according to the FDA’s most recent guidelines. I don't trust the FDA!
Tbd What is the purpose of the niacin and should a niacin supplement be administered if the medication does not contain niacin?
