narcolepsy

Avatar f tn Emerging treatments being investigated for narcolepsy include hypocretin replacement, hypocretin gene therapy, stem cell transplant, skin temperature manipulation and immunotherapy, but further research is needed to confirm their effectiveness. So, discuss the various options with your doctor and hope you find a balance. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar f tn I have had narcolepsy (and sleep apnea) for a long time. I had had three bariatric surgeries over the past 14 years, and my drs have wondered if some of my meds are not being absorbed properly or at the right rate, yet no one has done any kind of 'test' to determine that. I have tried everything possible for my narcolepsy---the ritalin patches, elixir ritalin.......etc, provigil, other meds....and of course xyrem. I take dextroamphetamine daily, even though it does litte...
Avatar f tn This is the symptom of a sleep disorder called Narcolepsy. This sleep disorder is characterized by excessive day time sleepiness, sleep paralysis, cataplexy where the person has episodes of loss of muscle function while awake, hypnogogic hallucinations and automatic behavior. You will need to consult your primary care physician, who may schedule you for a polysomnogram (sleep test) to rule out sleep disorders and initiate appropriate therapy. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.

Avatar n tn I finally went in for a sleep study and was diagnosed with narcolepsy! Narcolepsy is really rare, but at least a sleep study will rule out or confirm narcolepsy, sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, and probably other conditions as well. Good luck!
1580703 tn?1651904887 It is usually given for a viral infection. As you are recovering, I would advise you to continue with your medications and physical therapy. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar m tn You might want to see if you have narcolepsy. For years, I felt sleep, compelled to sleep and my arms felt like they had lead in them periodically. I saw a sleep neurologist....I've got narcolepsy. Its nothing like what they show in the movies. You should get it checked out.
Avatar f tn I was recently told I have Narcolepsy with Cataplexy. I am a 74 year old Female and I am taking 20mg of Ritalin SR in the AM and 25mg of Imipram for the cataplexy in the PM. I get about 2 to 4 hrs sleep and the rest of the night I toss and turn. My Dr. told me she doesn't give meds for her patients to sleep. I am concerned about not sleeping and then taking Ritalin to keep me awake during the day.I feel my health will be affected. Is this the normal way to treat my condition?
Avatar n tn You will need to consult your primary care physician, who may schedule you for a polysomnogram (sleep test) to rule out sleep disorders and initiate appropriate therapy. Narcolepsy is diagnosed by the sleep onset REM episodes (SOREMs), wherein the person goes into the dream phase or REM cycle soon after sleep onset. This is evident in the Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT). So, have yourself evaluated for sleep disorders and then take therapy after a confirmatory diagnosis.
Avatar f tn Predominantly Inattentive Type Predominantly Hyperactive/Impulsive Type Combined Type Sometimes a combination of therapy and medication is indicated. Of all the medications prescribed to treat ADHD, stimulants are often the most effective. Paradoxically, medications that are mild stimulants often deliver a calming effect to the central nervous system (brain and nerves) of those with ADHD. In some cases, antihypertensives or antidepressants may be prescribed.
Avatar f tn I am diagnosis with narcolepsy and have had symptoms for 5 years now. I have been taking 500 mg. of nuvigil for over 2 years. Plus, 60 mg of adderall a day. My symptoms have slowed down a little, but I have to take 2 naps a day and not drive anywhere. I have sleep studies twice a year and it seems to get worse each time. Its very aggravating to me! It seems like something would help. I see a team of specialists at Vanderbilt, but I need something else, but what? Anyone have any suggestions?
1287446 tn?1313947638 Hi everyone. I am not familiar with Narcolepsy or sleep disorders in general but my sleep has always been different. Typically, I fight daytime sleepiness with caffeine. In prior years, the caffeine has been a lot but I’ve lowered it significantly.
Avatar f tn I have Narcolepsy- My vitamin B 12 level is 235- should it be higher for my condition?
Avatar f tn Although the pt has RLS and PLMS, the arousal associated with these do not likely explain EDS- given a short overall sleep and REM latency, consider narcolepsy clinically. I had 156 arousals, 110 spontaneous, the rest due to limb movement. I also spent most of my sleep time in sleep stages 1 and 2, whith REM episodes scattered randomly. I had no time in stage 3, and when I had REM sleep it was from wake to REM with no progression through the other cycles.
Avatar n tn The combination of this study and my first MSLT nap study produced a perfect pattern for diagnosis of Narcolepsy. Has there ever been a study to look at the coorelation between the 2 diseases. Would many CFS sufferers be classified narcoleptic if they took the appropriate test? Narcolepsy leads back to hippothalmus and lack of production of hypocretin/orexin(?). Seems like all things lead to hippothalmus. Thank you!
Avatar n tn Other symptoms are facial weakness and droop to one side, trouble tasting foods and dry eyes. Physical therapy along with neuromuscular retraining helps a person with Bell ’s palsy.Strokes, diabetic nerve damage, multiple sclerosis, endocrine disorder like Addison’s disease, ALS, etc are other serious causes of arm weakness. Guilaain barre syndrome also needs to be excluded. Consult a neurologist and take care.
Avatar f tn On a side note, when I was feeling REALLY sleepy all the time and kept falling asleep at the wheel and at work, someone suggested taking medication for narcolepsy and it helped more than anything. Also, avoiding processed foods and doing cardio a couple times a week gives me more energy than coffee ... It's not so awful if you find a fun class and get into the habit of it. If a regular doctor can't find anything, find a great naturopathic doctor.
Avatar f tn i was wondering if i should be tested for narcolepsy, or if diagnosed with narcolepsy would they prescribe me to something similar to adderrall? if this were the case, being tested would not matter much if they would give me the same medications anyways. I just dont want to be misdiagnosed and on the wrong medication for the rest of my life.
Avatar m tn From your history it appears he has narcolepsy and is on therapy. He also has obstructive sleep apnea, for which he is not using the CPAP. Sleep apnea can cause variations in heart rate. And he should try to start using the pressure ventilation. The heart rate and the arousals you mentioned are not in the normal range. Masks can give a claustrophobic feeling to certain individuals. He could start by trying them for very short periods and then increase the timing as he gets more comfortable.
535822 tn?1443976780 A new review published in the journal Public Library of Science ONE confirms that Pandemrix, a swine flu vaccine produced by drug giant GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), is responsible for causing an up to 1700 percent increase in narcolepsy among children and teenagers under 17 years of age. Based on their findings, a cohort of scientists has determined that narcolepsy rates increased significantly following mass vaccination campaigns with Pandemrix.
Avatar m tn Yes, narcolepsy can result in disturbed nighttime sleep. Narcolepsy can only be diagnosed with a multiple sleep latency test during the day (usually preceded by an all night sleep study). Dr.
1745492 tn?1320198340 My husband was diagnosed with severe obstructive sleep apnea and narcolepsy about 5 years ago and the narcolepsy is under control with 200 mg of Provigil. He had hypnogogic hallucinations, body jerks when falling sleep, imaginary conversations with no one, talked in his sleep, fell asleep driving, talking and even in activities you'd never imagine a male would fall asleep. He appears to always have had it since about puberty but it got worse as his sleep apnea did.
Avatar n tn has anyone heard what vaccination is reportedly linked to narcolepsy? i saw a show yesterday about narcolepsy and they mentioned a vaccination was given to a 13 year old girl and 2 hours later she was experiencing cataplexly (a paralyzing catatonic state that is a symptom of narcolepsy) but they did not say which vaccination.
