729135 tn?1247495402 Regarding genetic testing for narcolepsy, positive test results indicate a susceptibility to narcolepsy but do not definatively diagnose narcolepsy. Positive genetic tests results are used to support a clinical diagnosis of narcolepsy. We recommend that you speak with your doctor regarding your symptoms and test results as well as to discuss the most appropriate course of treatment for your specific situation. We wish you the best.
Avatar m tn Hypersomnia is sometimes misdiagnosed as narcolepsy where a person experiences a sudden onset of sleepiness. The causes can be genetic, brain damage or medical disorders such as clinical depression, uremia and fibromyalgia. Narcolepsy is characterized by excessive day time sleepiness, sleep paralysis, cataplexy where the person has episodes of loss of muscle function while awake, hypnogogic hallucinations and automatic behavior. Narcolepsy is diagnosed by the sleep onset REM episodes (SOREMs), wherein the person goes into the dream phase or REM cycle soon after sleep onset.

Based on their findings, a cohort of scientists has determined that narcolepsy rates increased significantly following mass vaccination campaigns with Pandemrix.
Avatar m tn If someone has a small cavernoma and is asymptomatic, received a mild TBI due to motor incident would this be the cause of the bleed? or is it purely genetic and going to happen regardless of the TBI??
Avatar n tn I have recently been diagnosed with narcolepsy. For years, I have suffered from EDS muscle weakness that has become worse as I have aged (mid-40's). In the beginning, I blamed it all on being single and burning the candle at both ends (20's); then being a new parent (30's) and then being a single mom to a child with narcolepsy and a preteen (now 40's). I was told I have mild cataplexy.
Avatar f tn I was hospitalized for 5 days not too long ago and my heart rate was sinus tach. at about 140-150. I also have narcolepsy and need to take stimulants to stay awake, but they make my heart unbearable. I have narcolepsy with cataplexy and it seems that any increase in stimulants causes more cataplexy which makes my neurologist think its centrally mediated. I dont want to jump into another ablation until its all figured out. Any ideas?
Avatar m tn 22 hours is far more than I oversleep but I lose several hours a day. I thought of narcolepsy and other problems and will ask a doctor next week. If he can help I will put it on the forum for you.
535822 tn?1443976780 And yet the mainstream medical system and its allies in the government and media are willfully ignoring this glaring fact, blaming “unknown” causes and “genetics” for causing autism, which are the two most common catch-all scapegoats. And in explaining the drastic rise in autism rates over the years, the talking heads actually claim that there is no rise — the seemingly elevated autism rates are merely the result of improved autism screening methods that are now identifying more cases.
Avatar m tn m also always fatigued, sleepy and low energy, but I keep myself moving and motivated. I have been seeing a sleep specialist who diagnosed me with Narcolepsy (Polysomnograph and MSLT both suggestive of narcolepsy i.e. 4 SOREMs with mean latency of <8 minutes) About me: 24 years old white male, fair skinned with dark blonde hair, 6''0", 195lbs, in shape and athletic (work out and jog 5-6 days of the week). University educated and work in government policy, 9:00-5:00.
Avatar f tn t mention it but the second most commonly associated symptoms of Narcolepsy is Cataplexy, this basically causes sudden loss of muscle tone, weakness and loss of voluntary muscle control. IF you don't have a specific medical explanation, it's 'possible' for you to also be experiencing mini cataplexic attacks to explain the muscle and foot lift/drop issues......I would highly recommend you consider consulting with a health care provider that specialises in Narcolepsy.
Avatar f tn idiopathic hypersomnolence vs narcolepsy w/o cataplexy. Meds didn’t help. 3 years later, repeat OPSG+MSLT: MSL=6.3 min, 1 REM episode at 4.5 min. Last year, I developed troubling neuro sx, bilaterally but greater on right. Dysmetria causing falls down stairs, by misjudging where I plant my step. Troubles stringing beads & tying shoelaces. Slight resting tremor. Decreasing Adderall dose helped. Until last month, neuro exam WNL except tandem gait: foot jerks up/down, no control.
Avatar f tn be consistent with MS, but the doctors made the decision that we would follow that up in six months with another MRI. They are now suggesting that his problem is narcolepsy and cataplexy. We have been told to follow-up with a neurologist and have another, more specific sleep study. It takes weeks to get these appts, so now we wait. Do you know of anything that can be done to help a child with TS and possible Narcolepsy?
Avatar f tn Who should I see for genetic testing that could be causing Myself and 2 daughters to have POTS dyautonomia? A genetic counselor, genetic clinic, or University School Genetic Lab. I want to look into EDS and all the other enetic basis for the illness. Anyone else out there been tested?
Avatar n tn Herpes simplex (HSV) and herpes zoster have been identified as the cause of Bells palsy in a large number of cases.Other causes include tumor, meningitis, stroke, diabetes mellitus, head trauma. Most of us have a dormant HSV in our body and it needs to be reactivated to cause Bells palsy. The reactivated virus can certainly cause damage to the facial nerve. Avatar m tn Hopefully your son is under a doctor's care. There are medical causes of extreme tiredness - diabetes, hypothyroid, anemia, just to name a few. Also, he could have a sleep disorder preventing his sleep from being restful thus requiring more of it. If all else is ruled out, the doctor may want to evaluate him for narcolepsy. Do encourage him to follow up on every possibilty until the answer is uncovered.
Avatar f tn With any sleep related thing, see a sleep specialist! This is vital. Similar things happen to me as I have narcolepsy, but it very well may be something else. Do see a doctor.
Avatar f tn I am diagnosis with narcolepsy and have had symptoms for 5 years now. I have been taking 500 mg. of nuvigil for over 2 years. Plus, 60 mg of adderall a day. My symptoms have slowed down a little, but I have to take 2 naps a day and not drive anywhere. I have sleep studies twice a year and it seems to get worse each time. Its very aggravating to me! It seems like something would help. I see a team of specialists at Vanderbilt, but I need something else, but what? Anyone have any suggestions?
1287446 tn?1313947638 Hi everyone. I am not familiar with Narcolepsy or sleep disorders in general but my sleep has always been different. Typically, I fight daytime sleepiness with caffeine. In prior years, the caffeine has been a lot but I’ve lowered it significantly.
