Avatar m tn My dog has had giardia. My vet doesn't believe in fenbendazole as a treatment for it. He says, based on some research that was being done at LSU when he was in vet school there, that fenbendazole for giardia just doesn't work. He uses metronidazole (Flagyl). We treated my dog with that, and she hasn't had a recurrence. The Merck Veterinary Manual states that "Metronidazole (25 mg/kg, PO, bid for 5-7 days) is ~65% effective in eliminating Giardia spp from infected dogs.
Avatar f tn I have been diagnosed with suspected Giardia (awaiting stool test results). I have been on Metronidazole for three days with minimal improvement. The D has stopped but still very nauseous and terrible burning/heartburn. Should I be feeling more of an improvement by now? Or could this be a side effect from the antibiotic? Also heartburn/burning in the stomach a symptom of Giardia? TIA.
Avatar m tn I got Giardia (intestinal parasite) from river water and was prescribed first Cipro for "travelers diarrhea" and when that didn't work I was prescribed Metronidazole for Giardia. I took Cipro for 5 days then Metronidazole for 10. During the course of Metro I started having chest pain. I dismissed them because I was having muscle pains in virtually all my muscles off an on. I became more concerned after I began waking up with my chest vibrating like a cell phone!
Avatar m tn All the dogs including the Pug have vomited on and off. Some for a few days, some just once and then not for a while. Per our vet: We fed once a day instead of twice, then tried three times. We switched from Iams to Hill's IB prescription dry food, adding plain rice. They've been on that for two months. We treat the dogs with GastriCalm when they have vomited.
Avatar m tn Flagyl will cause your gut to feel awful for some time and with side effects of the drug. I would do a PCR stool test which is much more accurate than your typical stool test because it uses DNA to detect parasite.
Avatar f tn Safeguard (Fenbendazole) works very well for giardia. Spend some time online & do some research on it.
Avatar n tn Have you treated her for a Giardia infection? You may see unusual behaviors with Giardiasis, not just abnormal stools. Try treating for that and if the problem does not resolve please post again.
Avatar f tn If it were me I would simply forget the testing and worm with Panacur wormer (info below). Nothing else works for Giardia, and Metronidazole and Flagyl only stops it for a short time, then it returns. Plus dogs that have the potential for the MDR1 mutation gene (Collies, Shelties, Aussies, etc. with the merle gene should not be given Metronidazole or Flagyl).
7219853 tn?1389289076 My 20mo old female pitbull mix has been dealing with some tummy issues for months now. It started off very random, but has now became a weekly, sometimes daily problem. Her primary symptoms are: gurgling bowels, diarrhea and vomiting, loss of appetite. I have switched her food a few times, with no help, and she's now on a sensitive stomach grain free formula. Her vomit is usually clear or foamy, with grass if she's eaten some, and on two occasions, had fresh blood in it.
Avatar f tn 7 lbs, yorkie poodle mix, and has been diagnosed with giardia about 3 weeks ago. They prescribed him a round of panacur, followed by a round of flagyl, both of which he completed. They also insisted on feeding him Hills I/D prescription diet (sensitive) Rice & Egg formula. None of this seems to be working. His stool is mushy and greasy looking (no chunks of mucus like it was originally), he has shown a huge increase in shedding, and seems to be very itchy and biting his paws on occasion.
Avatar f tn She is about 12 weeks old. They had her spayed anyway..even we thought it was to early. She acted like a normal puppy for the first couple of days but then she stopped eating, was vomiting, had diarreah and lost weight very fast. She was also very depressed and lethargic. We took her to the vet and they diagnosed her with kennel cough and giardia. We gave her the medicine and tried giving her some pedialite because she still wouldn't eat.
1028297 tn?1252089571 Awful severe bloating and thowing up anything solid for days. I went to my local ER and they gave me IV fluids for 2 hours!!! Nothing is working!!!! help....could this be more serious?
Avatar f tn it seems to be giardiasis, go an check for giardia antigen in your stool to confirm. if antigen is positive i think within few weeks it will be resolved, or you can treat it by taking metronidazole or tinidazol or nitazoxanide.
Avatar f tn burning while urination burning sensation in bladder area constipation and thick foul smelly stool cracked corners of mouth clammy and warm feel of penis rectal itching This all started about 3-5 days after I had unprotected sex with a woman from Eastern Europe. I have been tested negative for all the typical STDs and parasites (HIV, herpes, gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, hepatitis, mycoplasma, giardia, HPV/warts, etc). All urinalysis and stools tests came back negative as well.
746785 tn?1232980749 In his first trip to the vet he tested positive for giardia and coccidia. We treated both with Flagyl and Albon, and after two weeks the diarrhea only seemed to be getting worse and there was blood in his stool. We took him back to the vet and again he tested positive for coccidia. The vet put him on Metro for 10 days, and a diet of overcooked white rice and grilled chicken. Once he was on the rice diet the diarrhea cleared up.
Avatar n tn He also started sleeping the whole day, his eyes are droopy but when I hold him, he looks normal and whistles normal, he is just a bit weaker on his grip and when he tries to fly, he is ok for a bit then loses his strength and dives, luckily we have carpet. I tried to force him to eat, he won't. I was able to put drops of water on his beak. Also, is this a health concern for my toddlers?
Avatar n tn They tested him for Coccidea (which he had when at the breeder) And also for Giardia. He had Giardia. They put him on antibiotics and he has felt much better almost immediately. He hasn't had a poop accident since we started the meds. She said he was bordering on malnourished - with his build (bulldog) it was hard to see how skinny he was. We thought he was just a slighter build than our other bullie.
864351 tn?1239199249 I have Giardia from last year in November. I took Zentel but I didnt pass(I took it alone, my mother didnt, but also I can say we are very hygiencal and I dont drink from ther glass or either) So now 1 week ago I did the stool test agin and showed up again the same ”Rare cysts of Giardia lamblia” Sympthoms are - diarrhea sometimes -the first thing is i lose wight, so me being Bodybuilding is very very dissapointing..
Avatar n tn Check for giardia first. Does it float? I know, that's a gross question, but if it is green and it floats, it's probably giardia. If you have a pet, make sure it is checked also because giardia can be passed back and forth. Check with a doctor.
354667 tn?1299137472 Can your doctor CONFIRM, that you have Giardia? There is a stool test for Giardia, did you have that test? I mean, you have to solve this, before thinking about other diagnoses. I hope you have spoken with a doctor about mebendazole (?). Do not ever try to cure yourself with antibiotics by your own.
Avatar f tn re increasingly finding parasites with resistance to metronidazole these days. I had a friend with Giardia who required three rounds of treatment before the symptoms went away for good. Research has shown that IBS symptoms can sometimes be improved with antibiotics. Personally, that just makes me suspect there's bad bugs involved, and it's not always just gut hyperactivity alone.
Avatar n tn I am so sorry about your dog. I do not use the giardia vaccine in my practice. The giardia vaccine is not even meant to prevent the giardiasis but is administered as an adjunct to treatment of the disease. Giardia is ubiquitous in the environment, is found in normal animals, and usually does not cause any problems, because normal flora in the dog can hold the disease in check.
Avatar m tn My question is what should the proper course of treatment be given the fact that the original course of treatment with Flagyl didn’t wipe out the giardia completely. At every step I have had to press for investigating giardia as a possible cause for my symptoms, so I am not sure if this is something that GIs commonly deal with.
Avatar f tn I visited the doctor Monday with a vaginal infection and was given Metronidazole to start taking. I went back for results Wednesday and I was confirmed to have BV. My doctor then gave me Erythromycin to take (2, twice a day)... as well as the Metronidazole (3, three times a day). This seems like an awful lot of antibiotics. Why was I given Erythromycin, when from as far as I can tell, Metronidazole alone is the recommended treatment for BV? Hope someone can shed some light on this. Thanks!
Avatar n tn Either your doctor or Public Health (free) can check you for giardia lamblia. It is done with a feces sample. If you had it while pregnant it should have been treated even though you were pregnant. When gone untreated it's side effects can be permenant and very damaging. I lost all ability to eat food and suffer from severe abdominal pain. If you have this you need treatment immediately! Please take the simple free test as soon as possible.
