Metoprolol dosage hypertension

Common Questions and Answers about Metoprolol dosage hypertension

toprol

Avatar m tn Metoprolol comes in two formulations, Metoprolol Tartrate and Metoprolol Succinate. If you were prescribed the Tartrate variety, 50mg, once a day as you stated, then you were on a beta blocker roller coaster with a steep peak followed by a deep valley. Metoprolol has a rather short half life of approximately 6 hours, so in 24 hours, 50mg is nearly completely metabolized. This type should be taken twice a day.
1464004 tn?1384139333 Has anyone had experience with side effects from metoprolol after using awhile? I've been on a minimal dose (25 mgs bid) for over 6 months now. I didn't seem to have any side effects to speak of until recently. I do also have positional vertigo. Not only has this gotten worse as of late but I have become unsteady on my feet and dizzy quite often. I had to get a ct scan for tumor in my neck and it was just horrible! I had vertigo and dizziness for hours after just from laying flat for 10 minutes.
Avatar f tn oh geez 15 years at least, to taking the metoprolol. Same dosage..50 mg 2x. I was having LOTS of palps, and the dr felt that the Atenolol just wasnt working so much for me anymore. I started just this past Friday ( 07/24). I know the brochure I got with it, says it can take time to get into my system. But...one thing when I was on the Atenolol...my heartrate very very rarely EVER went out of the 60s. Even when I was active.
Avatar m tn You are correct. Metoprolol has become a second line medication for hypertension. Nonetheless, it still can be used for treatment of high blood pressure, and it works very well for me. So I choose to,stay on it. While on 75mg/day, my last BP readimg at my physicians office was 105/60. This was a bit low for me, so I did a "reset" to completely metabolize the drug, then began my dosage again.
Avatar n tn I took 2 different versions of metoprolol, Toprol (metoprolol tartrate) and Toprol XL (metoprolol succinate). The second one is the extended release version. Toprol made my symtoms worse but Toprol XL worked fairly well in controlling my conditions, PVC's and PSVT. I was taking 50 mg a day in both cases. The only thing that affected me was a slight feeling of dizziness at times and some mental fatigue.
Avatar f tn I'm 29 and was diagnosed 8 years ago with portal hypertension due to a chronic schistosoma infection (therefore had an enlarged spleen, ascites and jaundice at the time). Since then I've been taking a low (I believe) dosage of spironolactone, propranolol and furosemide to control my blood pressure and water retention. Me & my man really want to have a baby within the next few years, and we're concerned about the possible complications/risks arising from this: 1.
Avatar m tn I've taken metoprolol for six days for high blood pressure, it made me feel lousy, groggy and gave me headaches. I want to stop it cold turkey, my doctor says its ok with such a small dose but I am a huge worrier and would like to know if anyone had any side effects when stopping even after taking it for such a short period of time??
Avatar f tn I know I shouldn't look for trouble before it happens, so I guess I'll stick with the increased dosage of metoprolol and just see what happens. Right now, it's the only med I'm on. If I'm lucky it will do the job and I won't have any insurmountable side effects. If not, I'm pretty sure that a-fib ablation is going to be the recommended next option.
Avatar m tn Yes, Metoprolol Succinate is the timed release. It is also way more expensive than Metoprolol Tartrate. I switched long ago to the latter and saved a lot of money. A dose costs literally pennies. You have to remember to take it twice a day though. I take it at "5 and 5"; at rising, and at dinner, and it's easy to remember. Metoprolol has the same bradycardia effect as Atenolol, so that has to be watched.
Avatar f tn I am a 22 year old female and have been on Metoprolol since i was 16 (for hypertension) the dosage was upped a year ago from 25 mg to 50 mg. The palps have become more frequent as of late and i have severe anxiety as well. Whenever i have a palp i tend to get really anxious about it and panic. it seems to be a vicious circle. is there a way that the medication has caused this problem? sometimes i feel them throughout the day and sometimes it's when i lat down at night.
567826 tn?1217020594 I was diagnosed with Atrial Fibrillation about 5 years ago and approximately two months ago, developed hypertension. They prescribed Metatropol and it seemed to work fine. Two weeks ago, the doctor cut my dosage to a fourth of what I was taking previously and now my BP is elevated again, but this time, it is accompanied by Brachycardia, which I've never had before.
Avatar m tn i am 24 years old and a couple of years ago i was put on 25mg of metoprolol when my doctor found that my blood pressure was 190/85 it had taken my pressure down to usually 135 to 145/70 but recently it has been staying up between 145/75 to 165/79. i am just wondering if i should ask my doctor to give me a higher dosage or what? i eat healthy and i exercise along with my job that is working outdoors... i do smoke cigarettes and drink alcohol. what do you suggest?
Avatar n tn My father is a Nurse Practitioner and says that my blood pressure was never at a level to merit Metoprolol in any dosage. He said I should have been given anti anxiety medicine for a short period of time until my situational stress was reduced. So now, what do I do? I want off the medication but now my doctors wants to send me to a kidney specialist and possibly put me on more drugs.Do you have any advise for me?
1475202 tn?1536274577 Objective is to maintain a resting heart rate of 50-60 bpm since I have grade three varices caused from portal hypertension a symptom of stage C decompensated cirrhosis. Since beginning this new medications (taken before bed) I wake up many morning with my heart pounding really hard then after about an half hour it returns to normal. Could this be a side effect of the medication or something else? Thanks for any information.
Avatar n tn Healthy 150 lb age 61, shaken when I had 1st recorded AFib Nov ’07 (after dental surgery) causing me to go on 25 mg. Atenolol (taken late evening) & aspirin ( already on Lisinopril keeping BP under 140/80). Appears Atenolol not good . All Dec light headed & had occasional Afib. Jan fainted one morning after awakin w/ low BP 90/58 after a night of AFib episode ( I was urinating frequently). Hindsight: totally stressed out. After the fainting, cardio ruled out plumbing/ valve.
Avatar m tn It's a commonly prescribed beta blocker for hypertension, and arrhythmias. Metoprolol has a side effect of slowing down the heart rate. I have no idea why it would be prescribed for anxiety. 25mg is a very small dose. I've been on as high as 200mg, and my cardiologist has prescribed dosages as high as 400mg. I would suspect that you will feel little to no difference in taking 25mg. I would explore why your heart rate is elevated in your sleep.

Avatar n tn This past year they occur more often, but always resolve themselves within 4 to 6 hours after taking 25 mg of Metoprolol. I had my last nuclear stress test in 18 months ago and my cardiologist said that I don't need to take another test for 3 years.I performed at 18 mets and my ejection fraction was 63%. I have hypertension which is treated successfully with a Lotrel 40/10. I am a daily runner and maintain a heart rate of between 135 and 140 during my runs for approx. 30 minutes.
Avatar f tn I checked with pharmacist and he said both Metoprolol and Atacand have shortness of breath side effects and spoke again with my dr and he said I should continue for a while.... because I have been using them for 3 month now... any suggestions?
Avatar n tn In the midst if an asthma attack, I will treat my patients with double and triple treatments at 3-4 times the dosage. The idea is to saturate the beta receptors in the lungs that react to the bronchdilitation effects of the drug. YEs, they get a slightly elevated heart rate and get the shakes...but it will avert intubation and mechanical ventilation. If you are finding yourself using the medication more often that usual, tell your doctor.
907812 tn?1245743402 I have been snooping around and seen on a web page that Ribavirin( I havent started treatment yet but I believe it will be Interferon and Ribavirin) can make any present heart problem worse, I have just been diagnosed with Hypertension(High Blood Pressure) and my meds for high bloods pressure are Metoprolol 100mg 2 x day. I would say my avg blood pressure is 145/90.
Avatar m tn 6ml – 2 x 1 Cordarone 200 – 2x2 = 800 mg daily Metoprolol Succinate ER - Seloken ZOK, 1x1, 50mg tabs Coumadin – 5 mg, 1x1 Coraspin 100 – aspirin Question: Many of these drugs have serious interactions and seem to be a heavy dose. Do you think I should take them or get a second opinion from a different cardiologist?
Avatar f tn Regarding my side effects to Atenolol I have major cold in hands, feet, red cheeks, extreme fatigue, major lightheadedness, anxiety, bad balance, nausea, no appetite. Avatar m tn However in a simple case of hypertension metoprolol is the best option. Its well balanced (a good selection for control of hupertension or arrhythmia), its an extremely common medication thats available just about anywhere you go, its cheap.. The list goes on really.
Avatar f tn Due to her drop in pulse, her doctor reduced her dosage of propranol to 25% of its original dosage, and has been slowly increasing it over a period of 2 weeks to 75% of her original dosage. Eventually he would like her to go back to 100% of her original dosage. My mom has not had a slow pulse since her beta blocker dosage has been reduced, however she has been experiencing a lot of fatigue, headaches and dizziness.
Avatar m tn I've also had an echo, stress echo, and several EKGs. I'm currently on 25mg of metoprolol (the beta blocker). I think that is about as low as the dosage goes without breaking the pills in half.
Avatar m tn The ER doctor administered a 100mg prescription for Metoprolol. Prior to that, I was only on .88mcgs of Levothyroxine for Hashimoto's Disease, along with 1000mg of concentrated Garlic extract. I had never had excessive hypertension, with an average blood pressure reading of 130s/70s. (Side Note: One year prior, I was having significant heart palpitations, which were checked by a cardiologist via ECG, 24-Hour Holter, Stress Test, etc.
