Metoprolol dosage hypertension

Common Questions and Answers about Metoprolol dosage hypertension

toprol

Avatar m tn Metoprolol comes in two formulations, Metoprolol Tartrate and Metoprolol Succinate. If you were prescribed the Tartrate variety, 50mg, once a day as you stated, then you were on a beta blocker roller coaster with a steep peak followed by a deep valley. Metoprolol has a rather short half life of approximately 6 hours, so in 24 hours, 50mg is nearly completely metabolized. This type should be taken twice a day.
Avatar f tn Lisinopril is an ACE inhibitor and the mechanism of the agent is to dilate vessels to reduce hypertension. Metoprolol is in a group of drugs called beta-blockers. Beta-blockers affect the heart and circulation (blood flow through arteries and veins). Metoprolol is used to treat angina and hypertension for high blood pressure. It is also used to treat or prevent heart attack. My regimen is Lisinopril and coreg (beta blocker).
Avatar m tn Yes, Metoprolol Succinate is the timed release. It is also way more expensive than Metoprolol Tartrate. I switched long ago to the latter and saved a lot of money. A dose costs literally pennies. You have to remember to take it twice a day though. I take it at "5 and 5"; at rising, and at dinner, and it's easy to remember. Metoprolol has the same bradycardia effect as Atenolol, so that has to be watched.
Avatar f tn Hello all, I have recently been having what i believe to be "heart palpitations." I am a 22 year old female and have been on Metoprolol since i was 16 (for hypertension) the dosage was upped a year ago from 25 mg to 50 mg. The palps have become more frequent as of late and i have severe anxiety as well. Whenever i have a palp i tend to get really anxious about it and panic. it seems to be a vicious circle. is there a way that the medication has caused this problem?
Avatar m tn I've taken metoprolol for six days for high blood pressure, it made me feel lousy, groggy and gave me headaches. I want to stop it cold turkey, my doctor says its ok with such a small dose but I am a huge worrier and would like to know if anyone had any side effects when stopping even after taking it for such a short period of time??
567826 tn?1217016994 I was diagnosed with Atrial Fibrillation about 5 years ago and approximately two months ago, developed hypertension. They prescribed Metatropol and it seemed to work fine. Two weeks ago, the doctor cut my dosage to a fourth of what I was taking previously and now my BP is elevated again, but this time, it is accompanied by Brachycardia, which I've never had before.
1464004 tn?1384135733 Has anyone had experience with side effects from metoprolol after using awhile? I've been on a minimal dose (25 mgs bid) for over 6 months now. I didn't seem to have any side effects to speak of until recently. I do also have positional vertigo. Not only has this gotten worse as of late but I have become unsteady on my feet and dizzy quite often. I had to get a ct scan for tumor in my neck and it was just horrible!
Avatar n tn My electrophysiologist recently put me on a beta blocker (Metoprolol) 25 mg twice a day for hypertension and a ton of other symptoms he said must be due to Neurocardiogenic Syncope. I was diagnosed with asthma a couple years ago and it seems as if the beta blocker is causing shortness of breath and a feeling that seems similar to how I feel after exercising, a sort of chest tightness I would say. Is this common for beta blockers to do to people with asthma?
Avatar m tn s a commonly prescribed beta blocker for hypertension, and arrhythmias. Metoprolol has a side effect of slowing down the heart rate. I have no idea why it would be prescribed for anxiety. 25mg is a very small dose. I've been on as high as 200mg, and my cardiologist has prescribed dosages as high as 400mg. I would suspect that you will feel little to no difference in taking 25mg. I would explore why your heart rate is elevated in your sleep.
Avatar n tn Healthy 150 lb age 61, shaken when I had 1st recorded AFib Nov ’07 (after dental surgery) causing me to go on 25 mg. Atenolol (taken late evening) & aspirin ( already on Lisinopril keeping BP under 140/80). Appears Atenolol not good . All Dec light headed & had occasional Afib. Jan fainted one morning after awakin w/ low BP 90/58 after a night of AFib episode ( I was urinating frequently). Hindsight: totally stressed out. After the fainting, cardio ruled out plumbing/ valve.
Avatar f tn oh geez 15 years at least, to taking the metoprolol. Same dosage..50 mg 2x. I was having LOTS of palps, and the dr felt that the Atenolol just wasnt working so much for me anymore. I started just this past Friday ( 07/24). I know the brochure I got with it, says it can take time to get into my system. But...one thing when I was on the Atenolol...my heartrate very very rarely EVER went out of the 60s. Even when I was active.
Avatar n tn 80 year old woman with hypertension , heart failure, borderline diabetes, history of arrhythmia , thyroid removed, arthritis . Complains of severe back pain, numbness in hands and feet, unsteady on feet (needs walker), incontinence, signs of dementia. My Question: Seemed better on previous medication regime: Norvasc, Lanoxin, Spironolactone, Levothyroxine. Worse on current medication regime: Metoprolol, Benazepril, Isorb Mono Tab, Spironolactone, Simvastatin, Levothyroxine.
Avatar m tn Morning - Olmesartan (H) 40mg, Metoprolol Succinate Extended Release 25mg; Evening - Olmesartan 40mg, Metoprolol Succinate Extended Release 25mg. Now, I have been further prescribed for 30 days, which I have started taking: Eltroxin 25mg empty stomach & Zyloric 100mg after breakfast. Kindly advise further.
1124887 tn?1313754891 So, yes, you are correct that propanolol works better for anxiety due to the nonselective effect. In terms of your white coat hypertension, we do know that having white coat hypertension is not something to ignore and I actually recommend treating people even with white coat hypertension because getting blood pressures in the 150's at any time are not good.
Avatar f tn I had a diagnosis of hypertension and tachycardia pre pregnancy which was controlled with lisinipril and metoprolol. After I became pregnant they switched my metoprolol to labetalol and took me off of lisinipril.Labetalol did NOT work! Long story short, over the eight and a half months I've had to stay on metoprolol and actually have it increased to 150mg twice a day. Hopefully that's all that I Will have to have as i approach the final weeks of this pregnancy.
Avatar n tn My father is a Nurse Practitioner and says that my blood pressure was never at a level to merit Metoprolol in any dosage. He said I should have been given anti anxiety medicine for a short period of time until my situational stress was reduced. So now, what do I do? I want off the medication but now my doctors wants to send me to a kidney specialist and possibly put me on more drugs.Do you have any advise for me?
672586 tn?1280933658 Can I simply switch without fear of withdrawal symptoms from the metoprolol? His instructions were to stop taking the metoprolol when I start the new diltiazem. I was not aware that I might face withdrawal from metoprolol.
Avatar m tn However, many of these problems occurred at the higher dosage (100mg/day); when at lower dosage (25/mg day) felt much better. Considering going back on Metoprolol since current Calcium Channel Blocker is causing similar problems and not really solving A-fib.
Avatar f tn I checked with pharmacist and he said both Metoprolol and Atacand have shortness of breath side effects and spoke again with my dr and he said I should continue for a while.... because I have been using them for 3 month now... any suggestions?
907812 tn?1245739802 I have been snooping around and seen on a web page that Ribavirin( I havent started treatment yet but I believe it will be Interferon and Ribavirin) can make any present heart problem worse, I have just been diagnosed with Hypertension(High Blood Pressure) and my meds for high bloods pressure are Metoprolol 100mg 2 x day. I would say my avg blood pressure is 145/90.
Avatar f tn I was put on Amiodarone and Metoprolol. I was taken off the Amiodarone in late May. I went to the Cardiologist last week - I have shortness if breath while going up the stairs, walking uphill or exercising. he now took me off he Metoprolol. it has been almost a week and I still see no change. Has this happened to anybody else? Help!
Avatar m tn >Are you sure they are skipped beats and not extra beats? I don't know. There is a longer pause and then a harder thud as it beats again. As I said, I'm not too sure that isn't just my sinus rhythm. I have a pretty pronounced one.It could just be the pause between my heart rate breathing in and what it changes to when I breath out.I had the Holter monitor a few months ago and nothing showed up then. I've also had an echo, stress echo, and several EKGs.
Avatar n tn This past year they occur more often, but always resolve themselves within 4 to 6 hours after taking 25 mg of Metoprolol. I had my last nuclear stress test in 18 months ago and my cardiologist said that I don't need to take another test for 3 years.I performed at 18 mets and my ejection fraction was 63%. I have hypertension which is treated successfully with a Lotrel 40/10. I am a daily runner and maintain a heart rate of between 135 and 140 during my runs for approx. 30 minutes.
Avatar n tn Beta-blockers affect the heart and circulation (blood flow through arteries and veins). Metoprolol is used to treat angina (chest pain) and hypertension (high blood pressure). It is also used to treat or prevent heart attack. It seems to me if you have high blood pressure the medication should be taken regularily and not as needed. I don't know the effect it has on chest pain.
Avatar m tn I am 38 year old.I was diagnosed of high BP(170/105mm/hg). I was prescrbed metoprolol 50mg and amlodipine 5mg. I have been taking this medine for a year. I have been regularly checking my BP ever since. It comes to 130/75mm/hg within a month. But Still I am taking the same dosage. My worry is : Is metoprolol and amlodipine safe to take?Since I am 38 only what would be its long term effects. That is taking the drug for over 30 years? Finally whether the dosage may be changed? Please help.
