Metoprolol dosage for hypertension

Common Questions and Answers about Metoprolol dosage for hypertension

toprol

Avatar m tn Metoprolol comes in two formulations, Metoprolol Tartrate and Metoprolol Succinate. If you were prescribed the Tartrate variety, 50mg, once a day as you stated, then you were on a beta blocker roller coaster with a steep peak followed by a deep valley. Metoprolol has a rather short half life of approximately 6 hours, so in 24 hours, 50mg is nearly completely metabolized. This type should be taken twice a day.
Avatar m tn 25mg of metoprolol, regardless of whether is tartrate or succinate (which you are taking) is a very low dose. I'm on 75mg, and was on as high as 200mg, with zombie like effects. 100mg did me good though. Metoprolol is known for depressing heart rates. I don't know about Antenolol, but perhaps this is a lower dose and is having less of a side effect. By the way 100mg. did not affect my libido.
Avatar m tn I've taken metoprolol for six days for high blood pressure, it made me feel lousy, groggy and gave me headaches. I want to stop it cold turkey, my doctor says its ok with such a small dose but I am a huge worrier and would like to know if anyone had any side effects when stopping even after taking it for such a short period of time??
Avatar f tn Hello all, I have recently been having what i believe to be "heart palpitations." I am a 22 year old female and have been on Metoprolol since i was 16 (for hypertension) the dosage was upped a year ago from 25 mg to 50 mg. The palps have become more frequent as of late and i have severe anxiety as well. Whenever i have a palp i tend to get really anxious about it and panic. it seems to be a vicious circle. is there a way that the medication has caused this problem?
567826 tn?1217016994 Hi Bromley, I am taking Metoprolol for my high BP and now BP is down and so is my pulse, which has been in the 50's and 60's for approximately a week now. Thank you so much for the response!
1464004 tn?1384135733 The metoprolol does seem to help, not as much for my PVCs or PAC, but more for the PSVT. It seems to happen less, is not sustained as long and slower, more like 150 to 160 BPM rather than my usual 220. So for that I appreciate it but the side effects are becoming problematic. As far as hair loss goes, I'm post thyroid CA and currently testing for recurrenceoso I'm already experiencing hair loss, so I really can't tell.
Avatar n tn My electrophysiologist recently put me on a beta blocker (Metoprolol) 25 mg twice a day for hypertension and a ton of other symptoms he said must be due to Neurocardiogenic Syncope. I was diagnosed with asthma a couple years ago and it seems as if the beta blocker is causing shortness of breath and a feeling that seems similar to how I feel after exercising, a sort of chest tightness I would say. Is this common for beta blockers to do to people with asthma?
Avatar m tn s a commonly prescribed beta blocker for hypertension, and arrhythmias. Metoprolol has a side effect of slowing down the heart rate. I have no idea why it would be prescribed for anxiety. 25mg is a very small dose. I've been on as high as 200mg, and my cardiologist has prescribed dosages as high as 400mg. I would suspect that you will feel little to no difference in taking 25mg. I would explore why your heart rate is elevated in your sleep.
Avatar n tn Talk to your doctor about the CHADS2 risk score. It stands for heat failure, hypertension, age greater than 75, diabetes, and strocke/TIA. If you only have one risk factor (hypertension), you have a choice between aspirin and coumadin. The risk of bleeding is thought to be about equal to the risk of stroke. The decision of which medication to take should be an informed decision based on your and your doctors judgement. Aside from bleeding I assume drug has side effects???
Avatar m tn re already taking Lisonopril for hypertension, be cautious, Metoprolol is often a very effective, cheap method for for control of hypertension as well. I now take it for that very reason. My guess is they put you on a low dose. What did they prescribe?
Avatar m tn For dosage information of prescription medicine, please consult with your doctor. Contraindication: MAOIs, pimozide. Patients in manic phase. Pregnancy. Precaution: Monitor patients for risk of suicidality. Screening for bipolar disorder; serotonin syndrome or neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS)-like reactions; abnormal bleeding; hyponatremia; activation of mania/hypomania; diabetes; discontinuation of treatment.
Avatar f tn She switched me to 100mg ER Metoprolol to take in the morning and 20mg lisinopril for the night. I had to take my bp every day and went back every week. Every week it would be high at the dr Office and she would increase the lisinopril. Mind you, I didn't take prescription anything prior to this except maybe an antibiotic when needed. Now I'm on these high doses of bp meds. Initially I thought well I'll get used to them, there's always an adjustment time.
Avatar f tn oh geez 15 years at least, to taking the metoprolol. Same dosage..50 mg 2x. I was having LOTS of palps, and the dr felt that the Atenolol just wasnt working so much for me anymore. I started just this past Friday ( 07/24). I know the brochure I got with it, says it can take time to get into my system. But...one thing when I was on the Atenolol...my heartrate very very rarely EVER went out of the 60s. Even when I was active.
Avatar n tn Beta blockers like metoprolol and ACE inhibitors like benazepril have been been shown to be of value in patients with congestive heart failure as well as for hypertension. Simvastatin is of value for patients with both diabetes and heart disease. Talk to your doctor and changes can be made to minimize the side effects.
Avatar m tn 4) Self weight for last 3 yrs. around 80 Kg. Taking medicines for hypertension. 5) Feeling pain in left hip joint. X-ray normal. 6) Feeling fatigued. 7) Ortho doctor advised me to consult physician for increased TSH & uric acid. 6) Kindly advise if any medication etc.
1124887 tn?1313754891 Propanlol and metoprolol are not great for blood pressure management. They are excellent for heart rate control and with a resting heart rate of 50, you do not need any more beta-blockade! Guidelines would suggest hydrochlorothiazide (low dose) as a 1st line agent for blood pressure or if you have diabetes or chronic kidney disease, Lisinopril (low-dose) for blood pressure management.
Avatar f tn I had a diagnosis of hypertension and tachycardia pre pregnancy which was controlled with lisinipril and metoprolol. After I became pregnant they switched my metoprolol to labetalol and took me off of lisinipril.Labetalol did NOT work! Long story short, over the eight and a half months I've had to stay on metoprolol and actually have it increased to 150mg twice a day. Hopefully that's all that I Will have to have as i approach the final weeks of this pregnancy.
Avatar n tn When it was a rough day, my blood pressure was fluctuating from normal to high normal or even pre-hypertension. One day it was 154/93 for a few hours. I think this was the day we went to court. So, my doctor decided to start me on Metoporolol. He suggested 25mg daily along with a 12.5 water pill. I have taken this now for about a year. At a recent followup, the concern is that now my potassium is at a 5.9 when is was at a 4.3 before I started taking metoprolol.
672586 tn?1280933658 Can I simply switch without fear of withdrawal symptoms from the metoprolol? His instructions were to stop taking the metoprolol when I start the new diltiazem. I was not aware that I might face withdrawal from metoprolol.
Avatar f tn Atasand as I understand is a medication that is NOT a calcium channel blocker. Calcium channel blockers decrease blood preassures and it has been use for patients with hypertension. It also reduce chess pain caused by angina . Maybe it would be better for you to take calcium channel blocker.Ask you doctor. Metoprolol is a beta blocker. In my opinion no one should take BB if only has high blood pressure and not other heart condition. But I am not a doctor. Your BP is perfect now.
907812 tn?1245739802 I have been snooping around and seen on a web page that Ribavirin( I havent started treatment yet but I believe it will be Interferon and Ribavirin) can make any present heart problem worse, I have just been diagnosed with Hypertension(High Blood Pressure) and my meds for high bloods pressure are Metoprolol 100mg 2 x day. I would say my avg blood pressure is 145/90.
Avatar f tn Metoprolol could be the culprit for you symptoms, but if they're not getting better off the medication, then it may be something else. It's possible that you're having bouts of Afib causing your symptoms, or that your heart is weaker, or you have pulmonary hypertension, or that the valve is leaky. If you haven't had a post operative echocardiogram, then you definitely should.
Avatar m tn >Are you sure they are skipped beats and not extra beats? I don't know. There is a longer pause and then a harder thud as it beats again. As I said, I'm not too sure that isn't just my sinus rhythm. I have a pretty pronounced one.It could just be the pause between my heart rate breathing in and what it changes to when I breath out.I had the Holter monitor a few months ago and nothing showed up then. I've also had an echo, stress echo, and several EKGs.
