Common Questions and Answers about Macrobid hemolytic anemia

Avatar f tn Hopefully your doctor followed up with you. I wouldn't be alarmed but you should work with your doctor to investigate further. WBC 2+ likely means you have some type of infection. Leukocytes were found in your urine. Ketones at 2+ are still okay but any higher, that's protein in your urine indicative of diabetes. You are still in the normal range. The Uro part of the test is checking your liver. The 2+ number does indicate something going on you need to talk to your doctor about.
Avatar n tn Contrary to the above post Prilosec is known to rarely have hemolytic effects and cause hemolytic anemia and anemia. This is unlikely, but possible. You should visit the fda site andfile an adverse drug effect report and discuss this with your physician.
Avatar f tn If you don’t know already, HCV treatment (the ribavirin component most importantly) can cause sever *hemolytic* anemia in a percentage of patients; I’m not sure you would be allowed to begin Tx until this is resolved. However, it’s also important to understand that iron is essential for the transport of oxygen, and is sometimes necessary; if you listen to some people on this forum, they will flatly tell you that iron + HCV is bad; not necessarily so.
6401689 tn?1380979665 In a setting of normal TIBC, if transferring is normal or low and ferritin is high then in all probability you are suffering from hemolytic or sideroblastic anemia. The most common hemolytic anemia are sickle cell anemia and thalassemia. Since a confirmed diagnosis cannot be given on net please consult your hematologist regarding this. Hope this helps. Take care! The medical advice given should not be considered a substitute for medical care provided by a doctor who can examine you.
Avatar f tn s not ANEMIA it is HEMOLYTIC ANEMIA caused by the riba!!!!!!!!!! Probably the reason your hemo went UP is because your riba went DOWN!
Avatar n tn Advanced kidney disease Hypothyroidism Other chronic diseases, such as cancer, infection, lupus, diabetes, and rheumatoid arthritis Old age Anemia Caused by Destruction of Red Blood Cells When red blood cells are fragile and cannot withstand the routine stress of the circulatory system, they may rupture prematurely, causing hemolytic anemia. Hemolytic anemia can be present at birth or develop later. Sometimes there is no known cause.
700212 tn?1240760820 this treat might help with the discussion: http://www.medhelp.org/posts/show/659112 in the mean time to sum it up, it's just better to get an iron study to see if you are iron deficient or not. anemia from tx is called hemolytic anemia and it doesn't have much to do with iron stores in the body, so there is no point in taking iron supplements if one has hemolytic but not iron deficient anemia.
Avatar f tn The kind of anemia from treatment drugs like ribavirin is hemolytic anemia which means red blood cells are destroyed and you have less of them to carry oxygen to your various tissues and organs. Low iron anemia is when you don't have enough iron in your system to carry adequate oxygen. Iron is what oxygen binds with in the blood, that's why it's red. With hemolytic anemia no amount of iron will help since the problem is not the iron but the lack of red blood cells.
2131202 tn?1339964103 The most significant side effect of ribavirin is hemolytic anemia. Hemolytic anemia is a type of anemia due to destruction of red blood cells. While most patients will be able to continue treatment despite this hemolytic anemia, about 10% of the patients may need to reduce the ribavirin dose to ensure that the anemia does not become more severe. Other side effects with ribavirin include cough, and some shortness of breath.
1394098 tn?1385960134 The type of amemia you are experincing"hemolytic anemia" is caused by the drugs prematurely destroying Oxygen carrying "red blood cells" and also the suppression of the bone marrow from making these cells fast enough to keep up ..so to speak.
646318 tn?1261181494 Enzyme deficiency protects hepatitis C patients from treatment-related anemia DURHAM, N.C. – Many people who undergo treatment for hepatitis C develop hemolytic anemia, a disorder that destroys red blood cells. In some cases, it is so severe they have to reduce their medication or stop therapy altogether.
Avatar f tn I posted this question on the wrong community board so am reposting here. I was prescribed macrobid for a UTI. I've always been prescribed bactrim or amoxycillan or the like. But for some reason my dr. put me on this drug. I do not have frequent UTIs. I had severe heart palpitations, hot and cold feelings, and felt like I would faint. I read that this should not be prescribed to an older adult with any debilitating condition. I have severe anemia and some internal bleeding somewhere.
Avatar m tn People with mild deficiency may have hemolytic anemia. Moderate deficiency may cause hemolytic anemia and elevated acidity in the blood and tissues. Severe deficiency can cause seizures; disorders of movements, and speech, intellectual disability; and a loss of coordination. It is suggested to discuss your concerns with your treating doctor. I sincerely hope it helps. Best wishes and regards!
Avatar m tn Thank You. From what I have learned most centers discontinue Bactrim or Dapsone at some point. Mine doesn't and I can see slight hemolytic anemia from Dapsone in my labs- Male with hemoglobin of 12.3 to 12.8 and slightly below normal RBC. I am diabetic and I think my HbA1c is lower than it really would be if my RBCs lived a normal life - mine is 4 to 4.5, I don't think my A1c is reliable.
Avatar f tn Are polycythemia diagnostic thresholds different for those who have hemolytic anemia such as thalassemia minor? Can your bone marrow essentially play tug of war with your spleen and liver?
