Lidocaine local anesthetic

Common Questions and Answers about Lidocaine local anesthetic

lidoderm

Avatar n tn All local anesthetic used in dentistry today are amides rather than esters. With the old ester-type locals (no longer used), cross-allergenicity did occur, so if you were allergic to one ester-type local anaesthetic, all the others were contraindicated. The good thing about the amides used nowadays is that cross-allergenicity does not occur. In other words, allergy to one amide local doesn't mean that you're allergic to other amide locals.
1571533 tn?1322943509 Lidocaine (INN) ( /ˈlaɪdɵkeɪn/), Xylocaine, or lignocaine (former BAN) ( /ˈlɪɡnɵkeɪn/) is a common local anesthetic and antiarrhythmic drug. Lidocaine is used topically to relieve itching, burning and pain from skin inflammations, injected as a dental anesthetic or as a local anesthetic for minor surgery.
Avatar n tn Even a small dose of local anesthetic injected directly into an artery takes the local anesthetic directly to the brain and induces a seizure. It is specifically for that reason that there are limits to the total amount of local anesthetic used at a time. This can be altered by adding epinephrine to the lidocaine to decrease the uptake into the blood vessels (you can use a higher dose) In relation to the nitrous oxide, very unlikely to cause seizures.
Avatar m tn You will need to know where the doctor is going to give you the local anesthetic. This is usually, though not always, in the mid-line of your scrotum an inch or so below the base of your penis. You could also use Emla cream and cover a greater area.
Avatar n tn There is no need to be anxious over having oral surgery with local anesthetic. It is your friend...remember that. Heck, I'd pull a tooth on a patient with no anesthesia if he or she could take it. I won't feel a thing. The anesthesia is available for the comfort of the patient. As far as the use of "caine" anesthetics, you are painting with too broad a brush.
Avatar f tn Local anesthetics can cause seizures, I think some of the local anesthetic must have been injected inadvertently into an artery. Usually very high doses are needed to produce a seizure but if it is injected directly into an artery going into the head and neck area much smaller doses are required.
673999 tn?1226935279 The lidocaine is a local anesthetic and the bicarbonate allows the lidocaine to penetrate the bladder wall to get to the bladder nerves. Lidocaine without the bicarbonate solution has only minimal bladder wall penetration and very short duration of action (minutes to an hour). In my clinic if 5 daily instillations is effective in treating the pain, I teach patients how to instill the solution themselves and give them a script for the supplies and solution for at home use. Good Luck.
Avatar f tn It probably isn't the lidocaine, it's the epinephrine that is in the lidocaine. You can ask your dentist to use an anesthetic without epinephrine, I have had tons of dental work and always ask for that. Dentist doesn't mind at all and I've never had any problems. It doesn't last as long but if you start to feel anything while they are working the dentist will just give you more. I have done fine with it.
Avatar n tn they do not affect the central nervous system and does not alter the mind. It is a local anesthetic and only affects the area of the patch. I have been using them for months on and off and can say with 100% confidence that they have 0 addictive properties. Be careful to only use as directed on the package (I guess that sounds weird because as addicts we NEVER take anything as directed!) They have helped me a lot with my sciatica when it gets really painful (along with Ibuprofen of course!
306455 tn?1288862071 s a local anesthetic. The same stuff the dentist uses to numb your mouth. Not certain, but do believe they are not addictive.
Avatar f tn Usually the steroids are the essential medicine to try to get some lasting relief. Without them the doctors just use local anesthetic like lidocaine. That can be done but after the local wears off you will not have any lasting benefit.
Avatar f tn Other treatments include cooling lotions like those containing camphor or menthol, capsacain or local anesthetic creams, amitriptyline and gabapentin tablets and electrical cutaneous nerve field stimulation which you have already tried. Please discuss this possibility and these options of treatment with your dermatologist I hope it helps. Take care and regards.
Avatar m tn The standard for a percutaneous liver biopsy (inserting a long needle between two of the right lower ribs to remove a sample of liver) is having the skin draped and preped with betadine , then a local anesthetic, usually lidocaine 1% is injected into the area from the skin to the sack around the liver. When numb a small incision is made with a scalpel and the biopsy needle is inserted and takes the tissue sample when you hold your breath. Many biopsies?
14051 tn?1238251732 The action of lidocaine is that it is a local anesthetic hence it prolongs the action of any drug when administered together. Keep me informed if you have any queries. Bye.
Avatar f tn I know Lidoderm is a Non-Narcotic Medication used as a local anesthetic. It numbs the area of the pain. It's usually used for things like shingles. I wouldn't think of it as dangerous, I think it's pretty safe. I do know dentists use it for dental procedures as well, pulling teeth and such!
587083 tn?1327120262 Since my husband is very worried about the pain he heard so much about,I was just asking if the urologist in the hospital would give him an anesthetic before performing the biopsy on the prostate. The Urologist (private clinic) said the hospital will not use any local anesthesia and if they do it will only be in the form of gel.Whilst he would inject Lidocaine into the nerve bundle so the patient will not feel pain.
Avatar n tn Does a local anesthetic for eye surgery promote faster healing of the eye versus a general anesthetic? Sue 1.30.
Avatar n tn It is going to be a local anesthetic with the surgery being at 1pm. The doctor told me that the procedure lasts and about an hour. My question is can I drink alcohol that night, say around 8pm. What side effects will happen with just a local anesthetic. Thanks.
Avatar n tn t find any scientific articles that specifically deal with positive test results of cocaine from the use of lidocaine (anesthetic) but it is mentioned a few times. Here's a website with the information posted for false positives. You may want to contact the writer of the article to see what his/her sources were. http://www.med.nyu.edu/patientcare/library/article.html?
Avatar m tn Xylocain /lidocaine are anesthetic cream. Longer use can create numbness. If you have applied more cream, it affects vagina as wee, numbing vagina and reducing the pleasure of sex activity. Numbness is not permanant. It is reversible. Stop using xyocaine. You will recover in due course of time. To help you to hasten the recovery, you may do Male deer exercise. Google the word. Learn it and do the exercise regularly. You may recover within a month's time.Spell check not done.
Avatar n tn Now, my teeth have reached the point that I must do something. There are no dentists within 100 miles that use a general anesthetic. My dentist is unable to find anyone willing to come to his office to administer a general anesthetic. So, a trip to the hospital operating room appears to be the only option available. I had my dentist work up a treatment plan. Six hours in the OR, to complete everything I need done, comes to $12k.
Avatar f tn Generally, though, it is not very painful and since most patients are only given a local anesthetic (lidocaine, usually), they can return to work if they feel able. I know several members have taken either Tylenol or Advil or something like that after the FNA and been fine. Depending on where you live, it will be either your doctor or a radiologist doing the FNA. In my case, a radiologist did the FNA guided by ultrasound.
Avatar n tn A common first line treatment plan is the diet and behavioral modifications listed on the website, plus a low dose of amitriptyline 10mg X 7 days then 25mg and increase slowly to tolerance. For patients in an IC flare there is a bladder instillation of buffered lidocaine, a local anesthetic, than can help relieve symptoms immediately. Its injected into the bladder thru a catheter in the doctor's office by a nurse. There are a number of treatment options for you.
Avatar f tn Neuroleptics like carbamazepine, felbamate, valproic acid, clonazepam and phenytoin alongwith gabapentin are effective. Local anesthetic agents like intravenous application of lidocaine, tocainide or mexiletene, can be prescribed as combination. Spinal cord stimulation introduces low level of electrical current to the dorsal portion of spinal cord and can include a fully implanted system or a system with an external power source.
