Common Questions and Answers about Levemir or detemir

levemir

Avatar n tn I went to my family doctor yesterday. I told her I wanted to start getting my health in order to get pregnant in a year. She advised against me ever getting pregnant. She said in my case I would be a higher risk than a normal diabetic. I'm a type 1 diabetic and have had it for 20 years. It is poorly managed. A1C was 10.2. Every diabetic Doctor I have been to has given up on me because my blood sugar does not follow their plan.
Avatar f tn Im diabetes 2 since 3 years a go, I used pills at the begining and 2 years ago my doc changed my treatment to insulin. Some days I wake up and my BS is high as today, was 225. Im using an app for counting carbs, yesterday I ate 220gs or carbs and my insulin dosis was 28 Levemir. I don't understad what failed, I know one unit of insulin works for 10gs of carbs. What could be the reason my BS is high? Every day I check my meals very carefully.
Avatar n tn Levemir is NOT meant to counter BG rise due to food. eating food will raise BG for 2, 3 or 4 hours levemir lasts 24 hours a rapid insulin lasts about 4 hours so it matches the BG result from food.
Avatar n tn The Levemir is NOT on a sliding scale. It is a given does once a day Or twice a day. 12 hours apart. is his 224 after eating or first thing in the morning before food or drink?
Avatar n tn I, too, had a lot of trouble with the Opticlick pen. It was just unreliable in that it would sometimes leak with injection so I never knew if I was getting the proper dosage. I switched to Levemir (flex pen) a couple of years ago, and it has been fine. Both Lantus and Levemir are the peakless insulins. They provide your "background coverage" all day long (24 hours). When you eat, you need the fast acting insulin like Novolog to act quickly to cover the meal.
Avatar n tn m on novolog and levemir (levemir is just at bedtime).
Avatar n tn I have recently changed to new insulin. I am now taking Levemir in the morning and at night taking Apidra. Since I have changed to this insulin my blood sugar is going upby alot. I was at 176 this morning and within a few hours it was at 296. This has never happened before and I have not changed anything in my eating. Why is it going up so much and how can I make this stop?
Avatar n tn I am curious as why you do not mention that Glargine(lantus) does NOT have a license for twice daily usage ,levemir has a licensce for OD and BD and has weight benefits for type 2 patients???? or are you heavily sponsored/involved with the manufactureres of glargine? I am interested.
1353681 tn?1387083733 Hi, I have not used lantus, but I do use levemir. Both are medium acting basal insulins. Levemir works best injected twice a day. I inject just before going to bed (22 units), and when I wake up in the morning (8 units). As you can see, I don't use the same dose morning and evening, as I find I need more basal insulin at night when I am inactive, than during the day when I am active. You will need to adjust your dosage based on your target blood sugar levels.
Avatar f tn I am an insulin dependant diabetic. I was out of Levemir for several days and I tried to control with Novolog. Wednesday and Thursday I was running over 600. Yesterday I got my Levemir and started taking it right away. It took most of the day to get down to 350. I was feeling real sick all day. Sleepy, dizzy, nauseous. muscle weakness. I slept from 6:00 pm until 10:00 am. My numbers were up to 500 again. I got them back to 300 by 3:00 pm, but have continued to feel just as sick.
Avatar f tn t giving him any the lantus people wants me on toujeo cause their patent was coming up so they stopped sampling it!!!! He offered me a levemir sample he said it had less weight gain than lantus and was the same., plus the levemir company still samples, I have been on this stuff for three weeks, I don't feel sluggish after taking it, I feel great, and the pen is nice!
Avatar n tn Since then he has been on many differnet variation of meds. Just over the past 6 months or so, they gave him LANTUS, in addition to his meds. (Actos, Glypizide, Metaformin) He takes the meds in the morning and the LANTUS at night. Here is my problem. He has a lot of highs and lows. Just 3 weeks ago, his average was 115. This week a different story. He has been in the mid 200's and he has not changed his diet. This morning, before breakfast, his sugar was 337.
Avatar f tn I even tried Levemir, but after two days the pains came back. I stopped all shots and the pain and other symptoms went away. Is there an insulin that doest not cause stomach pain, chills, and vomiting?
Avatar m tn That tells me that you either have made an error in your dosing or you are really not a Diabetic. No one takes 500units of Insulin in one dose. I am a considered a brittle Diabetic and I only use about 300 units every 3-4 days. Maybe that's why you are out of breath, lol. You would actually die if you took that much Insulin at once.
Avatar m tn I am diabetic 2. Taking Levemir 23 units at night. 13 unit humalog in every meal. Sugar is not very well controlled yet. But does not go above 10 mmol/l . I feel shortness of breath, if I walk or quickly come in the bed. Before 6 months EKG was done and no problem.
Avatar n tn If you really cannot tolerate it, you may ask your Dr about alternative long acting insulins such as Levemir (injected twice a day) and Tresiba (injected once a day), which may be alternatives to Lantus.
Avatar f tn Examples are insulin zinc suspension, protamine zinc insulin, and the insulin analogues insulin glargine and insulin detemir. The latter two insulins are now the most widely used long-acting insulins. * Biphasic insulins: mixtures of short-acting and intermediate-acting insulins in different proportions, such as 30/70, 50/50. Examples are NovoMix 30, Humulin M3, Insuman comb and Humalog Mix25.
Avatar n tn Hi, This would be an unusual reaction to Lantus but certainly not impossible. Did you start any other medications at this time? Or have sick contacts with anyone? Please speak with your doctor as soon as possible about this and perhaps he/she will suggest a change in medication. Take care.
Avatar f tn My Dr. wants to place me on Metformin or Glucophage. Does anyone here with MS take one of these? If so, what kind of problems might I expect? What good benefits do you receive? Any info is much appreciated!!!!
20693191 tn?1503884408 I tried to take Levemir and that one would barely hold me over for 8 hours. Its sometimes has to be a try and see phase. If you take it one day and the next day are having server complications then you may need to either figure out why those complications happening or see about trying something different.
Avatar f tn (Hopefully you take one of the newer insulins like Lantus or Levemir because it is too hard to control blood sugar with the older insulins such as Regular or 70/30). You might also need to be starting on fast acting mealtime insulins, depending on your numbers at other times. That is much too high. If you have a fast acting insulin you can also use it to correct those morning highs. People have mixed experiences with snacks to counter DP.
Avatar n tn I would suggest you talk to your endocrinologist and tell him, you problem, he might be able to switch you r insulin type or see there are other things causing you to have dry eyes. Several types of medications can cause that condition. Hope this helps. Pleas let us know how it goes.
Avatar n tn Some people do think that Lantus insulin causes some patients to gain weight, while the new Levemir insulin apparently does not do this. I read some articles about this just yesterday and was surprised, for I take Lantus and have noticed no weight gain at all. So this could be a factor. However, a change in metabolism in middle age probably is the real culprit, along with possibly a slower metabolism because you are not eating. Exercise should help both problems. Start walking!
