1353681 tn?1387083733 Hi, I have not used lantus, but I do use levemir. Both are medium acting basal insulins. Levemir works best injected twice a day. I inject just before going to bed (22 units), and when I wake up in the morning (8 units). As you can see, I don't use the same dose morning and evening, as I find I need more basal insulin at night when I am inactive, than during the day when I am active. You will need to adjust your dosage based on your target blood sugar levels.
Avatar n tn Then you would increase (with your Dr. supervision) your levemir by probably 1 unit per dose every 3 - 5 days until you get your fasting numbers on target (ideally 80 - 95 range - though your dr. may set a slightly higher number). Your before eating numbers should also be in this 80 - 95 range. Increase only slowly and once you get close to target make adjustments even more slowly. Your humalog is then used to cover what you eat and to prevent you going high from the food that you eat.
Avatar n tn When you eat, you need the fast acting insulin like Novolog to act quickly to cover the meal. For some, Lantus and Levemir act the same. For me, Levemir seemed to work better in that it provided more consistency to my blood sugar levels. I like Levemir. I have switched to 2 shots per day (morning and night) instead of just taking the 1 shot at night, because the 1 shot at night may not cover the 24 hours.
Avatar n tn The Levemir is NOT on a sliding scale. It is a given does once a day Or twice a day. 12 hours apart. is his 224 after eating or first thing in the morning before food or drink?
Avatar n tn m on novolog and levemir (levemir is just at bedtime).
Avatar n tn I have recently changed to new insulin. I am now taking Levemir in the morning and at night taking Apidra. Since I have changed to this insulin my blood sugar is going upby alot. I was at 176 this morning and within a few hours it was at 296. This has never happened before and I have not changed anything in my eating. Why is it going up so much and how can I make this stop?
Avatar f tn I am an insulin dependant diabetic. I was out of Levemir for several days and I tried to control with Novolog. Wednesday and Thursday I was running over 600. Yesterday I got my Levemir and started taking it right away. It took most of the day to get down to 350. I was feeling real sick all day. Sleepy, dizzy, nauseous. muscle weakness. I slept from 6:00 pm until 10:00 am. My numbers were up to 500 again. I got them back to 300 by 3:00 pm, but have continued to feel just as sick.
Avatar n tn I have type 2 diabetes (2 yrs). My A1C is 7.6 I am presently using Levemir Flex Pen (22) before bed. I take synthroid for hypothyrodism (10 yrs) and recently started taking crestor for high cholesterol (which is now within normal range) I 58, female and over-weight. Question: I want to start taking 200 mcg of chromium picolinate to help with my diabetes. Is this safe to take with the medications I am currently taking? Also, when is the best time to take it.
915277 tn?1252573113 The big uncertainty is what the FDA is doing about this as EASD surely has made them aware of their findings. But considering Lantus is made by Aprida who is owned by Sanofi-Aventis of France, the FDA may keep its hands off until it hears again from EASD.
Avatar f tn t giving him any the lantus people wants me on toujeo cause their patent was coming up so they stopped sampling it!!!! He offered me a levemir sample he said it had less weight gain than lantus and was the same., plus the levemir company still samples, I have been on this stuff for three weeks, I don't feel sluggish after taking it, I feel great, and the pen is nice!
Avatar m tn Also, you mentioned that you are taking 500 units of Insulin. That tells me that you either have made an error in your dosing or you are really not a Diabetic. No one takes 500units of Insulin in one dose. I am a considered a brittle Diabetic and I only use about 300 units every 3-4 days. Maybe that's why you are out of breath, lol. You would actually die if you took that much Insulin at once.
Avatar n tn I would suggest getting this evaluated by a primary care physician initially and depending on the cause diagnosed/ suspected, it can be managed accordingly or specialist care may be sought. For adequate management of diabetes/ blood sugar levels, it is advised to consult an endocrinologist. Hope this is helpful. Take care!
Avatar m tn I work in a remote part of the world serviced by medical practioners who potentially are here as part of their training regime. Recently it was reccomended that I add to my Diabetes Type II meds regime of Glucophage (Metformin) and Diamicron MR (Gliclazide) a use of either Lamtus or Levenmir Pen Insulin Injection sytems. Two questions: Do you have any experience of this meds regime? Would you see this as a non-reversable step.
Avatar n tn They had problems believing me when I told them about the high blood pressure reaction to Levemir. Funny the blood pressure returned to normal when I got rid of it.
Avatar f tn I even tried Levemir, but after two days the pains came back. I stopped all shots and the pain and other symptoms went away. Is there an insulin that doest not cause stomach pain, chills, and vomiting?
Avatar n tn The modern short acting insulin that is considered safe for pregnancy is Humalog (insulin lispro). The modern long acting insulin that is considered safe for pregnancy is levemir (insulin detemir). You will need to do basal-bolus testing to determine your correct insulin dosages for each type of insulin. You should also look into low carb eating (paleo style), which will help with managing blood sugar as well.
Avatar f tn What about the theory that during th enight if your blood sugar dips low your liver will put out glucogon to help you out....and by having a 3 a.m. cracker or small drink of milk it will stop the liver from producing more sugar? This discussion is related to Fasting blood sugar levels high in the morning.
Avatar f tn 2 I have also lost 49lbs without trying over the last 4 months. I take insulin. 30 units of levemir in the a.m. and 12 units of Novolog before meals. Could any of this have anything to do with my diabetes? I have had other tests and surgerys in the past. Went off the Depo shot 2 years ago after being on it for 9 years. My GYN said something about autoammune and diabetes but didn't understand ( he talks quick, lol ) I would really appreciate any input!! Thank you!!
Avatar m tn I am diabetic 2. Taking Levemir 23 units at night. 13 unit humalog in every meal. Sugar is not very well controlled yet. But does not go above 10 mmol/l . I feel shortness of breath, if I walk or quickly come in the bed. Before 6 months EKG was done and no problem.
Avatar n tn Some people do think that Lantus insulin causes some patients to gain weight, while the new Levemir insulin apparently does not do this. I read some articles about this just yesterday and was surprised, for I take Lantus and have noticed no weight gain at all. So this could be a factor. However, a change in metabolism in middle age probably is the real culprit, along with possibly a slower metabolism because you are not eating. Exercise should help both problems. Start walking!
Avatar n tn This completely threw me off and I ended up being woken up by paramedics 3 times in 1 week. My blood sugar would be normal before bed and then by morning it had gone to 1.8. When I would eat a snack before bed to keep my blood sugar from dropping, I would go high - 13.0-15.0 on average. My doctor has now switched me back to my Novolin NPH and I am still having a hard time getting back on track. I go to bed high, and wake up high. I test at 3 in the morning and I am high, but coming down.
Avatar n tn I havnt seen a lot of results yet.
Avatar n tn If you really cannot tolerate it, you may ask your Dr about alternative long acting insulins such as Levemir (injected twice a day) and Tresiba (injected once a day), which may be alternatives to Lantus.
