I have recently changed to new insulin. I am now taking Levemir in the morning and at night taking Apidra. Since I have changed to this insulin my blood sugar is going upby alot. I was at 176 this morning and within a few hours it was at 296. This has never happened before and I have not changed anything in my eating. Why is it going up so much and how can I make this stop?
Thanks for all your advices and recomendations. Yesterday I went to the doctor and he told I must use levemir and novorapid and check my BS several times during the day. As the time passes the diabetes is getting more difficult, its what he also told me. I live in Peru, here there's not enough aid and information on using insulin for the diabetics people.
You wife needs both the long acting insulin (Levemir) to be taken twice a day, and she will also need a fast acting insulin (such as novalog, Humalog or aphidra) to be taken just before eating so that it can 'cover' the food she eats (and with dose adjusted based on how much carbs and protein she eats).
The Levemir is NOT on a sliding scale. It is a given does once a day Or twice a day. 12 hours apart.

When you eat, you need the fast acting insulin like Novolog to act quickly to cover the meal. For some, Lantus and Levemir act the same. For me, Levemir seemed to work better in that it provided more consistency to my blood sugar levels. I like Levemir. I have switched to 2 shots per day (morning and night) instead of just taking the 1 shot at night, because the 1 shot at night may not cover the 24 hours.
What about the theory that during th enight if your blood sugar dips low your liver will put out glucogon to help you out....and by having a 3 a.m. cracker or small drink of milk it will stop the liver from producing more sugar?

I am an insulin dependant diabetic. I was out of Levemir for several days and I tried to control with Novolog. Wednesday and Thursday I was running over 600. Yesterday I got my Levemir and started taking it right away. It took most of the day to get down to 350. I was feeling real sick all day. Sleepy, dizzy, nauseous. muscle weakness. I slept from 6:00 pm until 10:00 am. My numbers were up to 500 again. I got them back to 300 by 3:00 pm, but have continued to feel just as sick.
I been feeling fine and now all of a sudden I am told I am in between 2 and 3rd stage liver disease and there are only 4 stages and yes it is frightening.
I am part of a discussion group concerning the diabetes I was just wanting to know basically what my liver results meant thats all. Thats why I placed the results on here.
Thank you, PastorDan. I read something about Metformin that said if you have weakness, to not take Metformin and I sure don't need to add to my symptoms. I hope your wife is doing well today. Is she in alot of pain? I hope they can help her with the liver disease. I don't think I realized fatty liver could cause chirosis. That's kind of scary! I've had a fatty liver for many years. I really need to lose alot of weight but my insurance doesn't cover weight loss.
Pharmacologic dosages of chromium (200 mcg/day or more for adults) may potentiate the hypoglycemic effect of insulin and oral antidiabetic agents. Chromium appears to play a role in normal insulin function and glucose utilization, and some investigators have suggested that it increases insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance and decreases blood glucose levels in certain diabetics, possibly those with low chromium levels.
I am really trying to see if my sister's condition has anything to do with her being given this shot. Last time she was given it was April 2013, she is currently in the hospital fighting for her life!! So with all the warnings about if you have a liver disease you shouldn't be taking this shot and the doctors are advising her liver isn't functioning and for it to be as far gone as it is, if she had come to hospital a year ago they wouldn't have been able to do anything!!
If you are out of breath it could be many things. Heart Disease, Heart failure, COPD, Pneumonia and probaly a host of others. It also could and more likely is poor conditioning. My suggestion to you. As being out of breath or short of breath can be a serious situation, I would go to a qualified Physician and have this evaluated asap. If it is real bad, you might consider going to your nearest emergency room. Hope this helps you.

I was going thru a bottle of vodka every 2 to 3 days. I started having discomfort in the liver area with nausea fatigue and dry mouth. Had an lft done all normal. Still felt sick and went to the hospital lft normal except elevated bilirubin ultrasound normal. Had another lft couple of weeks after bilrubin down to 1.3. And another normal ultrasound. I still deal with right quadrant pain fatigue and nausea.
My daughter has been diagnosed with liver disease. She had hep c but that is now under control. She has developed varies in the aesophagus and these are banded every three months. She now has frequent nose bleeds and would like to know the significance of this. She had a drug problem and she also continues to drink alcohol in large amounts. What is the likely outcome of this as she does not listen to what I have to say regarding not drinking.
He should be restricting sodium, taking medications to prevent ascites, varices, and hepatic encephalopathy, monitoring for liver cancer, restricting red meat, eating a liver friendly diet, and not drinking or taking medications that harm the liver. Obviously it is his choice whether or not to drink and whether or not to take care of his liver.
Also only patients with cirrhosis of the liver are prone to liver cancer. Liver cancer is a very serious and many times deadly disease. It is one the worse cancers you can have if not caught early.
An MRI with contrast is the best test for determining if a growth in the liver is benign or cancer. You should have a MRI perform assuming whoever is doing the testing is experienced in diagnosing liver cancer. Most radiologists are not experts in liver tumors so they can miss cancer.
