Hi! Doctors will prescribe either clomid or letrozole to assist with ovulation. There's two main differences: it doesn't have anti-estrogenic side effects like clomid; and although studies have proven letrozole is an effective fertility drug it hasn't been approved by the FDA yet for fertility use, thus isn't covered by insurance (beware it's very expensive). Letrozole was developed to treat estrogen-sensitive breast cancers.

Letrozole is the generic name for Femara. You'll see it referred to as that on here, too. I am on my 2nd round and waiting to see if it worked this cycle. Compared to Clomid, the s/e are nil. Clomid was much worse. So far I've not noticed anything different with Femara. Good luck!

My husband and I have been trying for almost 1 year. I was on Clomid for 6 months and last cycle switched to Letrozole. Now my period is 4 days late and 2 pregnancy tests say NEGATIVE - this is killing me! My OB has told me I will have to take progesterone to bring on my period. Has anyone else had a late period due to Letrozole or had negative PG tests but turned out they were PG? Thank you.

Last week, I had Laparoscopy surgery for my endometriosis (which resulted in stage 1). My doctor is prescribing Letrozole, everyday for 2 months, to clean up any endometriosis that may have been missed during surgery. After the 2 months, I would take 1 Letrozole for 5 days to promote ovulation. Any suggestions? Right path? Or is the only option I have is another IVF? Thank you...

I tried clomid as well a couple of years ago, with very similar side effects as you describe. The fertility specialist I am seeing now put me on Letrozole. Letrozole is actually a drug used for women with breast cancer. One of the 'side effects' is that it stimulates ovulation. Of course the dose you take for fertility purposes is much lower compared to taking it for breast cancer. I did a little research on my own and found that Letrozole is actually much safer than clomid.

Hi Sherry, I am doing the injectables now...on round three but using letrozole, instead of clomid. The cost sounds about right (unfortunately). I have been told that the IUI success rates are better in round 3 and 4, once you get used to the drug combo. I have been trying to find an insurance plan that covers fertility as well.

My 2nd one was done by a fertility doc. I took letrozole on day 3 to 7. Menopur shot day 3, 6, 9. Then hcg shot on day 10. They monitored my follicles and lining. I can just hope and pray for now. And ohhh. With my fertility specialist, they will do an iui twice for a cycle. Which is today and tomorrow. My gynae just did my iui once in a cycle.

i have pcos and have tried clomide before, of which i did not ovulate on it. i have been on letrozole for the last 4months and have just gone to 5mg day 2-6. i have taken letrozole to concieve. On day 14 i had a scan that showed two follicles size16 and 11. could not have a followup scan so had progestrone level checked on D28.(irregular periods) and it was 34.

Ok, so, doc doubled my Letrozole this cycle and for first time had more than one follicle growing so had hope this time..a little history, I have PCOS and Agressive Endometriosis. 2 failed IUI's so far with letrozole and HCG inj. Before that, Clomid for 9 months with no success. So this time again, follicles on the left stopped growing at 14mm, and the one on the right was 24mm today but was a anuovulated.. I have done Letrozole twice now, one with an IUI that ended up with a BFN this morning. I'm super bummed about it...trying to be as positive as possible. Will go in for a beta tomorrow morning to check where my hormone levels are-that has to be helpful to know, right? We've been ttc for over 2 years now and had a mc in Feb. 08 when trying w/o meds or anything. I had no side effects with Letrozole and my lining was great apparently.

It does work and worked for me on the first cycle. I know others who it also worked for. If you are looking for an alternative to clomid it is something you may want to investigate bfore moving on to injectibles. It works in a different way than clomid and therefore may work even if clomid did not.

Just before i found out i was pregnant my doctor had prescribed me letrozole femara which I didnt end up needing to take. Unfortunately, because I was so overwhelmed with grief over the miscarriage and could not think rationally, I decided to take the letrozole counting the bleeding from the d&c as a period in which i used from day 2 throught to day 6. As mentioned, it has now been 3 weeks 4days since the d&c and today I had a positive pregnancy test.

Tanu - I suggest you see a proper reproductive endochronologist or fertility specialist in your area. And get tested thoroughly to know the exact reason for not being able to conceive. As clomid didn't work, you may need more extra help and first of all you need to know the accurate reason for the delay. Good luck.

Have asked before but want to hear of any positive stories using letrozole(femara) to help with ovulation, this drug is primarily a drug used to help with breast cancer and is still in research stage for fertility problems, my dr is talking with other gp's because is not happy to prescribe it to me.

I was then put on letrozole (femara) days 3-7. Went in on day 14 for an u/s and had a follicle measuring 17.5mm. Did OPK for a few days and got my +. Went in the following day and had IUI. I am now 12.5 weeks pg with TWINS! It can and it does work!!!

I have found a fertility specialist and he has prescribed the following drugs. On days 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 I need to take 1T/day of Letrozole (to stimulate folicle growth). From day 8 onwards 2T/day of Progynova (to ensure thickening of my uteral lining) and from the 3rd day after ovulation, I need to take Duphaston. I can tolerate Letrozole and Duphaston without any problems.

I only ever tried clomid when I was doing iui's. I never tried Femara but I've heard of many women who have but don't ever recall them becoming pregnant. I have since moved onto IVF for many reasons. I have what's considered a difficult case. I hope it works for you and gets you a BFP!!

Before going to IVF, if you do not want to deal with clomid again, you might want to speak with your REI about a drug called letrozole (ovulation induction is a non-approved use) or about injection fertility drugs with intercourse at home (if you do not have periods on your own). All/any of the above options are reasonable.

I am on my 2nd round and had positive ovulation 8 days ago. I went for a progesterone test yesterday. Hopefully the Dr has good news for me.

If you are seing an OBGYN, most have not heard of using femara (letrozole) for fertility.It is a breast cancer drug. It has not been FDA approved to treat infertility issues. I was seeing a RE and he put me on it and also did IUI with it. I am now 12 weeks pg with Twins. It can and it does work! :) When I went back to my OB for my prenatal care, she asked me what was done to get me pg and she said she had never heard of it....so that may be why.
