446049 tn?1649005835 A friend of a friend who had (IBS) chronic diarreah and her doctor started her on Cholestyramine which she got in packets and mixed with juice to drink. After a week her diarreah was gone and now has been gone for a little over 3 months. I know that it's prescribed for cholesterol issues, but it also has stopped her constant diarreah. The strange thing is her gastro doctor prescribed it and her cholesterol levels have always been fine.

Avatar f tn He has been on a combination of Arava 20 mg ( Hydroxychloroquine) and Plaquenil (Leflunomide) . He has been going severly downhill since January and has lost 40 pounds, has constant mucous drainage that he chokes on especially after meals, and has severe shortness of breath. Can these symptoms be a result of the medications he is taking? Is it safe for him to take two synthetic DMARDS at the same time?
Avatar n tn Has anyone taken Questran (cholestyramine)? Has it helped or cause worse problems. Does it actually stop the diarrhea? I am taking also Lomotil which has not helped much at all. I started it 2 days ago and have not noticed any change. If this med doesn't help than I will have to start on TPN. Thank you for any information you can give.
Avatar n tn The small Intestines usually absorbs bile but if there is too much it can enter the Colon and scorch the lining causing inflammation, pain, nausea, and a variety of other issues. If your stomach pain persists ask your doctor about the Cholestyramine. Good luck to you...
6708370 tn?1471490210 Pruritus due to liver disease is particularly resistant to therapy. Cholestyramine (Questran) 4 g/day, gradually increased to 24 g/day, is one option. If the pruritus does not respond or the patient cannot tolerate cholestyramine, rifampin (Rifadin) can be tried. Spider angiomas, Bier spots, and “paper-money” skin are all superficial vascular problems that may be related to liver disease.
168348 tn?1379357075 Maybe your should talk to your son's doctor about taking Cholestyramine powder. It's by prescription, and to take Benifiber. The Cholestyramine absorbs the fat. It was originally for cholesterol. I knew someone who took two products and she does well. You have to play with the Cholestyramine powder till you get the right dose so you don't get constipated. That's why you take the fiber.
Avatar n tn I had my gallbladder removed about 6 years ago and I was going at least 6 to 12 times a day and when I had to go I had to go now! Very urgent. I went to my family doc and he said I needed to bulk up with fiber. I didn't think that would help but I tried it. Tried a lot of things that didn't work. I then tried Cholestyramine. That helped with the urgency but I was still going 5 to 8 times a day.
Avatar f tn I had pruritus on my ankles, hands and wrists, drove me batty. And my skin got flaky. Also noticed I had hives continuously. For dry flaky skin Edson salts is very good because the salt attracts water to the skin. Aveeno oatmeal bath is good too. I use them together.

Maybe you should talk to your son's doctor about taking Cholestyramine powder. It's by prescription, and to take Benifiber. The Cholestyramine absorbs the fat. It was originally for cholesterol.

Avatar m tn Cholestasis, blockage of the flow of bile through the liver, can result in the build-up of bile acids and bilirubin in the blood. Cholestyramine (Questran) and Colestipol (Colestid) are commonly prescribed to help manage pruritus. These drugs are bile acid binders that attach to bile acids in the blood and help eliminate them from the body.
Avatar m tn I hope someone can provide potential solutions. I am 59 female. July 2015 I had ruptured appendix, which I believe occurred almost two weeks before the surgery causing the doctor to cut about 4" of my colon and 12" of my small intestine and sewed them together. Now at 7-months later, I am still having problems with diarrhea, bloating, gas, etc. The doc provided prescription cholestyramine for oral, back in August daily. Then doc cut to a package every other day.
Avatar m tn it is called Cholestyramine. If you are in doubt of what it is and how it looks, please look it up on WebMD. or another trusted site. I have a few extra cans available. I no longer need the amount i used to use. This has been a godsend for me and it can be for you too. These are brand new sealed containers that are current, stored properly and in date. Each can measures 378 grams and is 42 measured doses. I paid $95.00 per can at Rite Aid Pharmacy.

Avatar n tn She began taking a digestive enzyme, and believes this injured, and burned her colon and rectum. She was greatly concerned so went to her Dr. and scheduled an appt. for a colonoscopy and had some biopsies taken. The results came back normal. She has now been experiencing severe pain and burning in her rectum all day long. It even wakes her up in the middle of the night. It has been over 6 weeks since these biopsies. Her doctor told her there is nothing wrong, she should be fine. The Dr.
332074 tn?1229560525 The two lines of treatment are to bind the bile salts with agents such as cholestyramine and to treat the spastic colon with smooth muscle relaxants. It sounds like that is the strategy they are employing. It all sounds appropriate.
Avatar f tn I believe you are referring to a fecal transplant - a procedure not FDA approved. I asked about this in a Crohn's and Colitis forum a few days ago with several expert physicians. Their response is that the extreme doses of antibiotics to completely clear out all bacteria in the GI tract is extremely dangerous - possibly deadly. Much research also suggests that the bacteria in our GI has developed over our lifetime and removing it could cause more auto-immune issues than it fixes.
216175 tn?1226095585 all the bugs that are killed and the toxins they produce from dying from the meds build up in your intestines are binded to the cholestyramine and eliminated from your body. the only con is that it will give you really loose watery stool so your body will take time to adjust to the med. b vitamins and magnesium complex defdefDEF!! help with neurological and physical issues.
Avatar n tn I kept a bottle in my fridge and used a gauze pad and put some on the pad and used it as a compress for my anus .It really seems to help the burning .I hope you get feeling better and that I was of some help .
