I have an Auto Immune Disorder of the connective tissue as labeled by my Rheumatologist. I take Plaquenil 200mg, and Arava 20mg daily. I have been on the Plaquenil for over a year and the Arava for 5-6 months. I am still having flares and experiencing pain on a daily basis. I'm a 28 year old male. My tested positive for ANA but the doctor hasn't labeled me with Lupus. I see my Rheumatologist on the 18th of December and I'm looking for the next step in my treatment.
i take the leflunomide (arava) but also take pills for the reflux, which does help. I take renitidine i believe it is called. I found it worked pretty good for the swelling myself. I am also on the Embrel, but still do not have R.A under control. I just wanted to say that the arava was the best drug i have taken up until i was put on the embrel. I live in B.
I HAVE SMALL BOWELL SYNDROME,I HAVE STAYED AWAY FROM USING CHOLESTYRAMINE ON A FULL TIME BASIS[IT DOES SLOW BOWELLS BUT WITH A LOT OF LOWER PAIN] I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT COLESTIPOL WILL HELP ME,.MY BOWELL MOVEMENTS PER DAY ARE 6 TO 25 TIMES.I USE 60 MG, 4TIMES A DAY OF CODIENE TO HELP CONTROL THIS PROBLEM.
THE GOOD AND BAD OF THIS MEDICATION FOR ME PLEASE?
Prior to that she was on Arava for five months and it almost killed her. She lost 60 lbs, had heart issues, urinary tract infections, had no appetite and was incredibly weak. Her RA doctor said it was not the Arava. It was. I took her to the Lahey Cllinic and they confirmed it. I had taken her off the medication before going to the Lahey Clinic but it was a binding med. so it stayed in her system for months afterwards.
Hi, I was recently diagnosed with psoriactic arthritis and the doctor put me on Arava. I've been on it for 4 weeks with no relief. In fact, the pain has increased in all of my joints and my toes have decided to join in on the fun as well. My question is has anyone had any experience with this drug in the amount of time it takes to start working? Is it usually immediate or does it take time to "build up" in your system before it begins to work?
I know I have all the symptoms and do get worse when I am off of my Arava but I also wonder if I could have Lupus because I have a lot of the symptoms of it and my sister has it. My mother has fibro so I wonder if maybe that is what I have instead as well. Things are continuing to get get worse and my dr is wanting to start injection therapy for my symptoms. I just want to be sure I have ra before I begin these injections they really scare me!
Has anyone taken Questran (cholestyramine)? Has it helped or cause worse problems. Does it actually stop the diarrhea? I am taking also Lomotil which has not helped much at all. I started it 2 days ago and have not noticed any change. If this med doesn't help than I will have to start on TPN. Thank you for any information you can give.
Cheri70 is right low fat is the only way to go but you may have to start taking Cholestyramine which is a powdered medication that you can mix with juice or water that binds the excess bile. Often times, especially in women, you can have stomach irritation and develop Colitis if your Liver produces too much bile. The small Intestines usually absorbs bile but if there is too much it can enter the Colon and scorch the lining causing inflammation, pain, nausea, and a variety of other issues.
My pain hasnt been relieved totally with this med and the rheumatologist wants me to start on Arava in combination. Im scared of the hep c coming back with both of these meds. Opinions needed.
My father has severe rheumatiod arthritis. He has been on a combination of Arava 20 mg ( Hydroxychloroquine) and Plaquenil (Leflunomide) . He has been going severly downhill since January and has lost 40 pounds, has constant mucous drainage that he chokes on especially after meals, and has severe shortness of breath. Can these symptoms be a result of the medications he is taking? Is it safe for him to take two synthetic DMARDS at the same time?
Thanks. I HATE drug side effects stories. My elderly mom's hgb dropped to 8.5 on Arava (for rheumatoid arthritis), I had a personality change on Ambien (so bubbly I couldn't even stand myself). We have to really be on the watch every time we add a new medication. I worry the most about people who require multiple meds.

I had my gallbladder removed about 6 years ago and I was going at least 6 to 12 times a day and when I had to go I had to go now! Very urgent. I went to my family doc and he said I needed to bulk up with fiber. I didn't think that would help but I tried it. Tried a lot of things that didn't work. I then tried Cholestyramine. That helped with the urgency but I was still going 5 to 8 times a day.
Have you tried xenazine ( chemical name is tetrabenazine)? We've also found clonex gives some relief.
Has anyone become pregnant while taking cholestyramine? I f yes, any side effects to fetus?
About 1 week after stopping MTX, I stopped my folinic acid and my hair loss seems to be worse and also my nails are splitting and my tongue is sore. ( I also had 2 Remicaid infusions 2 months ago in August and 1 week of Arava in May and am on Plaquenil (past 4 months and for awhile in the past).
Though it is frustrating, it resolves over a period of time. Taking cholestyramine will resolve the symptoms if it is bile acid diarrhea.
2. It can be due to other causes not related gallbladder or its removal. Some of the causes include irritable bowel syndrome, celiac disease etc.
You can find out whether you get relief with cholestyramine.
Also try to avoid fatty food.

The itching has returned worse than ever.I used to control it with 2 packets of cholestyramine daily but it is not stopping it this time.My skin is killing me from the scratching which I know I shouldn't do but cant help myself because I get desperate for relief.Has anyone with cirrhosis who has had bad itching found anything over the counter that provided some relief from the itching.
My Dr prescribed cholestyramine powder to take before lunch to help stop the diarrhea. She also suggested taking otc bile salts or pancreatic enzymes as well. I am a bit confused, isn't the problem too much bile salts in my system? Also, why take a cholesterol medication for gallbladder diarrhea issues? Are there any negatives to taking it? Ie..strain on liver, etc?
Also, any other recommendations? Is the diarrhea typically forever after gallbladder removal or will it subside?
Now at 7-months later, I am still having problems with diarrhea, bloating, gas, etc. The doc provided prescription cholestyramine for oral, back in August daily. Then doc cut to a package every other day. Then I cut to 1/2 pack every other day. I take with either apple or craneberry juice. The water like diarrhea, leaking, bloating still occurs. Also I go to the bathroom near 4-times daily and then about 2 more times at night. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
it is called Cholestyramine. If you are in doubt of what it is and how it looks, please look it up on WebMD. or another trusted site. I have a few extra cans available. I no longer need the amount i used to use. This has been a godsend for me and it can be for you too. These are brand new sealed containers that are current, stored properly and in date. Each can measures 378 grams and is 42 measured doses. I paid $95.00 per can at Rite Aid Pharmacy.
