I had much better control when I was using humuln n and humulin r . I am now taking lantus and novolog .I have had to increase my dosages and am still having a hard time getting control of my blood sugars. My aic is 7.8 this quarter vs 8. last quarter. should I go back to using the older drugs that gave me better control?
MY DOCTOR PRESCRIBED LANTUS INSULIN TO REPLACE THE HUMULIN L INSULIN THAT I HAD TAKEN FOR SEVERAL YEARS. I HAVE NOTICED THAT WHEN I TAKE THE LANTUS INSULIN PRESCRIBED DOSAGE(S) THAT APPROXIMATELY 15-30 MINUTES LATER I START TO SWEAT PROFUSELY. IS THIS A NORMAL REACTION TO THE LANTUS INSULIN? I VOICED MY CONCERNS TO MY DOCTOR AND HE HAD NO COMMENT. I AM ALSO TAKING SEVERAL DOSES OF HUMULIN R AND HAVE GAINED WEIGHT SINCE I STARTED TAKING THE LANTUS. PLEASE ADVISE. THANK YOU.

I have been on Lantus for over two years having switched from Humulin N at bedtime. Not only have I gained 30 pounds, I started having mood swings and irritability since starting Lantus and lately now in the past month I had two severe lows right after taking the Lantus (within 30 minutes of taking my shot).
You're a good friend to be concerned about your friends well being. If "N" is Humulin N, there is no "standard" Humulin N dose that will work for all people or even for the same person in all situations. This applies to other insulin types too. If your friends at home test results show low glucose levels "several times per week" it is time to have his/her insulin dosages re-evaluated by their physician.
Zoe - I think Windchimes meant humulin insulin not huminsulin. Humulin is considered an intermediate acting insulin as its duration is 24 hours, but this can vary per individual. LANTUS, on the other hand, is considered long lasting as its duration is up to 36 hours.

The Lantus / insulin glargine is a very good well-tolerated product. The injections are painless. It is often prescribed together with metformin.
Some people find that one works more effectively than the other, so which is used is really up to the patient. Humulin, more commonly called Humulin NPH, and even more commonly called just NPH, is a long acting insulin. It is absorbed more slowly, and it's effects last longer, about 12 hours. Usually NPH is used in combination with one of the fast acting insulins. An alternative long acting insulin would be Lantus.
I do have to agree with a comment above about the injection site. I recently experienced the same problem, but with my Lantus. I always injected in my belly because it was such a big shot for me (35 units). But for some reason my blood sugars have been really out of whack and I felt like poop. I decided to try giving my shots in my rear and I have had a lot of success...and the insulin is absorbed better there for me because I do a lot of walking and bending to pick things up.
Both my husband and myself have type 2 diabetes we have no health insurance so we have to buy otc insulin . I need to know how many units should be the initial starting dose of Humulin 70/30 until we can adjust according to daily bs readings.
Why is it that Lantus requires a prescription when other long-acting types of insulin do not? I feel like I should be able to go to a drugstore and purchase any type of insulin that I choose without a prescription.
Does anyone know a formula for amount of Lantus needed for a basal dose vs how many units fast-acting you take per carb? I have major swings. Yesterday was told by a nurse that the Lantus I take is really low compared to amount of Humalog I take, but she never told me HOW much she thought I should be taking.
I take 1.5 u Humalog per carb for all meals (for last 3 weeks - has changed many times). I'm supposed to take 11 u Lantus in am. My morning BS is usually 300-500.
When I started using 2u Lantus in morning, 2 weeks ago, I'd go low in the late afternoon/early evening, and then my morning sugars would be elevated ... 140s, 150s. So I split the dose: I'm now using 1.5u Lantus AM & 1u Lantus PM. It definitely works better than 2u QD, and I've checked the middle of the night - not a problem. The drug sheet for Lantus doesn't mention BID dosing, but my internet articles do. What are your thoughts, and is Levemir better for BID dosing?
I am wondering whether this is some hormone related issue ,or whether I have developed some resistance vs humalog so it doesnt work well (and the lantus is too much). I have given up using any alcohol or doing demanding exercise(jogging) for a while becuase they make the matters worse (though i really enjoy exercising).

I have had so much problem with that Lantus Opticlik that my Health Providers will switch me to the Levimere Flex Pen after I use up all the lantus cartridges. Is lantus a better insulin or is Levimere just as good as Lantus using it as a basal 24 Hour insulin???. I get my supplies from the Military Hospital because I am a retired service member and they do not have the lantus solostar flex pen but they do have the levimer flex pen.
My sister also has type 1 and takes lantus at bedtime and then takes humalog for correction AND to cover food with carbs, so in her case, if her BG is not High (if it IS under a particular number that she and her doc have discussed), then she does not need a correction shot AND if she was not going to eat anything containing carbs at that time, she would not need humalog to cover food, HOWEVER, she would still take her lantus shot at bedtime.
No complications, no beginnings of complications. I use a combination of Lantus and Novalog, and because my a1c numbers are great, it has not been suggested that I change this for a pump. I believe that both pumps and the "poor man's pump" as the Lantus/Novalog or Humalog combination has been called, offer great control. But the real key to good control without highs OR lows is in testing. And this means using a glucometer even if the pump is doing tests as well.
m on a good track to continue the AM Lantus injections. Im also increasing my Humalog to equal 1 unit for every 10 g. carbs vs 15. Depends on what activities I'm doing. Also, I am taking a sliding scale 1-4 additional Humalog units in a.m. to cover high fasting bg...in addition to covering breakfast carbs. It seems to correct well, and I'm off to a better day overall.
My whole body starts swelling up after weeks of Humulin N shots starting from the feet and legs. I am very sure this is the cause because the swelling subsides and my body will return to normal if I stop my injections. Please help.
I am taking Humulin-N but my sugar level every morning is around 225.
Insulin reduces glucose [blood sugar] levels not elevate. Keep in mind many things elevate glucose levels; improper diet, lack of exercise, excessive body weight, even stress.
Test times:
1. - Lantus - before dosing to see your beginning day level
2. - Preprandial - right before you eat to get a baseline measurement
3. - Postprandial - 2-3 hours following a meal. This will tell you how the foods you ate affected your glucose level.
Also important to dose Lantus at the same time each day.
Why are you running out !?!??!?!
If it is just running out refill the prescription early 2 days. If you have Humilin R on hand I question how old it is. If more than 30 days it is probably expired anyway. I also question having this Insulin as it has been largely discontinued for use as better insulins are now available.
But the short answer is Novolog and Humlin R do not act in the same manner so substiuting can be very tricky and is probably not recommended.
My bf has been changes to Lantis one time at bedtime. It seem that he may be doing very well on it. The concern I have is about using Humulin R as your mealtime shot. I'm having trouble with how to know his carbohydrate-insulin ratio. I think I'm goind to start at 12 carbs/ 1 unit...Does this sound like a reasonable place to start? Also, what would be a good website to read up on this?
I have been on lantus since about 2003, and in 2007 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I ve just been reading how lantus may cause cancer . im afraid the lantus may have caused this. did anyone else have anything like this happen? as well im type1 diabetic and my bloodsugers are really up and down all the time and i take a split dose of lantus. my suger will drop and stay down all day or for hours!
