Lantus use in cats

Common Questions and Answers about Lantus use in cats

lantus

Avatar m tn I have a diabetic cat, "Lickety Split", that is on 5 units 2X/day of Lantus. He has been urinating all over our home for the past two years. Despite the exhausting amount of methods I have read or been advised to do, the inappropriate elimination has continued and we have had to tear up carpets, throw out items, constant every day cleaning soiled areas.... Two years ago, I had questioned whether it might be diabetes because of s/s he was displaying.
Avatar n tn Our lifestyles are different, and our split doses of Lantus are different. In my case, I need most of my Lantus in the morning and only 2 units at night to see me through the night. My twin on the other hand, splits her dosage more half and half. And yes, I agree that there is a peak in the action of Lantus somewhere between 4-5 hours, usually. Some people notice it more than others. I notice it a great deal and have to feed it when it happens.
Avatar m tn Do not dilute Lantus and do not mix Lantus with any other type of insulin. And, do not switch to another brand or type of insulin or change the dose or dosage time of any type of insulin you are using without first talking to your doctor.
Avatar f tn If you have abnormal glucose levels at bedtime, one philosophy is to bring them down to normal using a small amount of short acting insulin and then use the lantus to make sure they will be normal in the morning.
Avatar f tn I have been on lantus since about 2003, and in 2007 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I ve just been reading how lantus may cause cancer . im afraid the lantus may have caused this. did anyone else have anything like this happen? as well im type1 diabetic and my bloodsugers are really up and down all the time and i take a split dose of lantus. my suger will drop and stay down all day or for hours!
Avatar n tn I have had so much problem with that Lantus Opticlik that my Health Providers will switch me to the Levimere Flex Pen after I use up all the lantus cartridges. Is lantus a better insulin or is Levimere just as good as Lantus using it as a basal 24 Hour insulin???. I get my supplies from the Military Hospital because I am a retired service member and they do not have the lantus solostar flex pen but they do have the levimer flex pen.
Avatar m tn other wise my sugar levels are in range I wanted to confirm lantus alone is sufficient for me or i need to add rapid insulin also. C-PETIDE SERUM - IS .
1353681 tn?1387083733 Insurance forced me transition from Lantus to Levemir in February, and I haven't seen any difference in effectiveness. I am only taking one injection before bed, and it's worked just as well as Lantus in keeping my morning numbers in range. The biggest difference I noticed was that Lantus would burn every time I injected and Levemir does not.
12861759 tn?1432917955 I really think you need an in-person discussion with an endochronologist. You can use both medications, injected in different parts of the body. Even at night. A small amount of Novalog on the left side of the tummy and Lantus on the right.
Avatar m tn m not sure if you live outside of the USA, but my understanding is that Lantus is NOT available for use in a pen here in the US. My daughter just switched to Lantus via syringe & Novolog via pen after 8 years on an insulin pump. Her diabetes educator just gave her the Lantus prescription 3 days ago & said it is not available in any other form. I have read that outside the USA, however, it is sold in pen format.
Avatar f tn I am on Lantus since Jan 2014 and find it very hard to addapt. I was told to use 8 units at bedtime no matter what my reading is at night now i have notice at night when my reading is 9.7 and give myself 8 units of lantus my reading is very high in the morning 13.8 or more now when is lantus then suppose to kick in . my mealtime insulien is 2 to 3 units at mealtime, Surely I have to give myself more lantus at night maybe 12 units.
Avatar f tn I am a type 1A diabetic with normal insulin sensitivity and predictable bg responses to insulin doses. Until now. I went on a reducing diet (high protein, next to 0 carbs, increased exercise) but never decreased my once daily PM dose of Lantus (10 units.) Immediately my AM bg's jumped to over 200 and stayed there. No hypoglycemia during sleep (I never woke up, anyway.)I could bring my daily bg's down with my shortacting insulin.
704262 tn?1247674638 Yes, you can take Novolog and Lantus in separate injections, but they may not be mixed in the same injection or at the same injection site. Generally Novolog is only prescribed if you follow a strict physician-approved routine. If you have a meter and strictly monitor results of various combinations under vary circumstances use of both medications should cause no problems. Be careful using the Novolog because you can easily drop your blood sugar to very low levels.
Avatar n tn My endocronologist has suggested I use Lantus in place of Ultralente as it is being discontinued by Lilly very soon. I was wondering, since Lantus can't be mixed with other insulins whether there have been any problems with it when injected using a jet injector. My concern would be whether there might be any residual insulin left in the injector that would mix with the Lantus. Any comments would be greatly appreciated.
Avatar n tn I have been on insulin for nearly 38 years and am lucky enough to have no complications so believe I have managed my control pretty well. However since starting to use Lantus (and I was one of the first users in the UK) I have stopped having real problems with hypos but have had great problems with consistency of delivery. I want to find out whether this is just me (and I do not think so) and how many other diabetics are having similar problems and what they are doing about it.
Avatar n tn This is a wonderful resource for Type I's...often a minority in support groups, IMHO. My first posting to the forum although I've been type I since age 7...now a healthy 45 year old (female). I am mostly happy with the current combination of Humalog Pen and Lantus. My questions are in regards to Lantus: I understand the "non-peak" aspect...but personally dropped very low in early a.m.'s (about 4-6 a.m) after injecting on a regular basis at 10 p.m.
Avatar n tn And as for the sweats about a half hour after taking Lantus, there IS a slight peak action with Lantus, although this peak action for most people is several hours after taking the Lantus. In my case, I usually take my Lantus at about 6 am, and I notice a peak that causes my glucose levels to drop by about 8 am. This happens even if I have not taken any Novolog or eaten breakfast (sometimes I wait until I get to work to take Novolog and eat breakfast), so it has to be the Lantus peaking.
Avatar n tn I take Lantus and my doctor is telling me that they do not come in a pen in the US only in Europe.I was on a different type of insulin 30/70 and it just did not work for me and that was a pen now I am back on the needle and I do not like it and never will I take the Lantus with the needle.
Avatar n tn I am in my second month of using Lantus with Humalog. At about week 2 or 3 I began experiencing sporadic rash in front of shins. Later, the itching and raised bumps appeared behing the knee at top of calves. Now I think it is appearing at left elbow. General feelings of itchiness accompany the outbreaks without apparent rash. I am attributing this to the new medication - Lantus - as all else remains basically stable in my life routine.
Avatar n tn For some, the split is about 50 percent in the morning and 50 percent in the evening, but in my own case, I take about 80 percent of my Lantus in the morning and 20 percent at night before bedtime. Again, each person is different, and the endocrinologist usually works with us to develop the right split of the dosage if it is felt that doing this is the best way to avoid high levels on a regular basis in the mornings.
Avatar n tn When I started using 2u Lantus in morning, 2 weeks ago, I'd go low in the late afternoon/early evening, and then my morning sugars would be elevated ... 140s, 150s. So I split the dose: I'm now using 1.5u Lantus AM & 1u Lantus PM. It definitely works better than 2u QD, and I've checked the middle of the night - not a problem. The drug sheet for Lantus doesn't mention BID dosing, but my internet articles do. What are your thoughts, and is Levemir better for BID dosing?
Avatar n tn I take Lantus every evening. I fell asleep and failed to take my dose. I woke at 5 am. should i inject novolog to correct my number?
Avatar f tn Even if my sugar is good before bed and I take my lantus it is always high in the morning. Any reason and any advise?
Avatar n tn My son, concerned that he may also do this made a point of keeping his Lantus in the bathroom where he gives himself the shot right before bed, and keeping his Humalog in his "pack" that he carries with him throughout the day. Thus the two insulins never cross paths.
Avatar n tn Some of us prefer to split the Lantus dose, taking some in the morning and some in the evening to equal the complete dose. That way, only half is petering out after 20 hours, and the sugar levels stay more even throughout the day. The Lantus shouldn't work quickly, for it crystallizes in the injection site and slowly dumps tiny bits of insulin into the body all day. So the quick-acting insulin is what you want to use to lower a high reading.
Avatar n tn So imediject has a valid point if you are taking Lantus in the morning. Many diabetics split their doses of Lantus and take some at night and some first thing in the morning so that peaking is minimal (for some of us, there IS a slight peak about 4 hours after injection) and the petering out of it as it wears off is also minimal.
