I have a question regarding bolus insulin for snacks. How many carbs can he eat without having to bolus? He takes Lantus at bedtime, then Novolog for breakfast, lunch and dinner at a carb/ insulin ratio of 1:12. He goes to school all day, and sometimes gets hungry and I am wondering if it is necessary always for him to take insuling even for snacks?
Any ideas/input would be appreciated.

I have been on Lantus for over two years having switched from Humulin N at bedtime. Not only have I gained 30 pounds, I started having mood swings and irritability since starting Lantus and lately now in the past month I had two severe lows right after taking the Lantus (within 30 minutes of taking my shot).
The currently accepted treatment of choice is a basal (long-acting) insulin like Lantus once or twice a day and a bolus or rapid acting insulin before meals. A fixed dose of bolus like you describe is not as good as developing a carb ratio. You need to take the correct insulin dose each meal to cover what you eat (unless you want to eat the same thing every meal!).
Was prescribed Lantus 1yr and half ago and for all that time I was telling various doctors and the pharmacy that my sense of smell had been altered that all perfume smelt terrible. I even posted this on the internet. Also that my face cheeks get rash. All the Doctors and Pharmacies ignored me saying they had never heard of such a side effect. Further to much worse facial rash I insisted to go off the Lantus and get something else.
I have a diabetic cat, "Lickety Split", that is on 5 units 2X/day of Lantus. He has been urinating all over our home for the past two years. Despite the exhausting amount of methods I have read or been advised to do, the inappropriate elimination has continued and we have had to tear up carpets, throw out items, constant every day cleaning soiled areas.... Two years ago, I had questioned whether it might be diabetes because of s/s he was displaying.

I would continue to use insulin glargine, a recombinent insulin analogue (Lantus) without concern. This was the recommendation in the British Journal Lancet Vol 1, 374 issue 9649 p511-513 15 August 2009. The media has produced some fear based upon five studies that I have read, and used some statistical manipulation that would have failed me in "statistics one" in the eighth grade. The experimental protocols were pretty crummy.
Thanks for the feedback. I am still thinking about switching off Lantus just to see if I feel better. If not, I can always go back on it. I see my dr. in April and will see what happens.
Very little acitivity since winter, bad lungs, joints, gout, heart, etc. Doctor says he needs to change to Lantus insulin. Should we see endocrinologist for another opinion? Couldn't we try other oral meds first and dietary changes? Also triglycerides very high, 600s, for a while now. Chronic renal disease, but stable, Any ideas or recs.? Is it better to go insulin route? I am worried about hypoglycemia, as his mobility is limited.
just found out my son has type 1, he was in the hospital for a week with out of control bs levels of over 500. he works on a sliding scale and carb count for his insulin and gets 15 mg of lantus everynight. i am still having alot of trouble with his high bs at night. i have that stupid fear of giving him to much insulin and then he gets lantus. i guess the ?
Yes this happens a lot, when switching to lantus or the pump. Lantus is a long acting insulin that has no peak it gives you a steady basal rate similar to the insulin pump. I realize that it is hard to trust the the insulin enought to not have a snack, but it does work, and it is hard to resist the urge to react to the number.
I give myself about 21 units of insulin per day--13 units of Lantus and a sliding scale of Humalog between 6-10 units--depending on how many carbohydrates I have eaten--So, it takes me about 2-3 months to use a bottle of Humalog and the Lantus would take longer, but I must open a new bottle every month for consistency issues. Does that help?
MY DOCTOR PRESCRIBED LANTUS INSULIN TO REPLACE THE HUMULIN L INSULIN THAT I HAD TAKEN FOR SEVERAL YEARS. Hello I am new to novolin My Dr has me on 15 units twice a day after being on lantus for 1 year and it just did not work at all for me under 29 units was not enough and over 20 units bottomed my sugar out
My question is and this also did this when i was on lantus is it normal after injecting yourself with insulin that my blood sugar spikes up I am talking it can be 150 and after the injection it will jump up to 300 with in 3 hours is this normal or is it just me I know I am not making sense
i was treated with himulin 30/70 insulin for a years and usually my fasting sugar is high (200-400) and now my new doctor give me lantus and apidra insulin instead of himulin insulin and now my fasting sugar reaches to 215 not exceeded. Are lantus and apidra combatable for me?? and what are the side effects of them??????????
s also on a once-daily PM dose of Lantus and has predictable bg responses to insulin doses, and Lantus has worked really well for her, but she has not changed her diet. When she's in a period of intense exercise (during swim-team season), she reduces both her Lantus and Novolog doses a little, and it works fine.
Let us know if you've tried lowering the dose and what happened. I also was unable to find out anything about this in the literature.
I have been diabetic for ten years now and have been taking lantus and humalog this whole time. Well a new doctor Im seeing took me off lantus due to the fact that it could cause my twins to become insulin resistant. She has me taking more of the humalog but it doesn't seem to be helping me and now i have a harder time controlling my sugar where before i kept it pretty well controlled. Should i get a second opinion or does anyone have suggestions?
I have been prescribed Lantus insulin for my diabetes. Since I have started using the injections (6 months), I have experienced dry and burning in my eyes. My doctor suggested that I get my tear ducts plugged to make sue I have enough tears to be able to wear contacts. I have worn contacts since 1976, and this is the first major problems that I have had. I now have to wear glasses at all times; maybe once every two weeks I can wear contacts for 3-5 hours.
I do encourage you to go back to your doctor and see if he has any more suggestions for adjusting your insulin. For some of us, the best option has been the pump. But it is not for everyone and you should be able to get good control with insulin.
The most important thing is to not despair. Having diabetes is really hard and when things don't go well, it can be really frustraing.

i am not a doctor but a person who has ben diabetic 32 years. i am now on an insulin pump and only use Novolog, a rapid acting insulin for both my background and bolus insulin needs. i would recommend you call the clinic as that very well could be a reaction to the Lantus and they may put you on a different background type insulin.
m not a medical professional, just the parent of a kid with diabetes. Lantus is a long acting insulin that starts working within 1 to 2 hours, with a minimal peak in about 6 hours, and lasts 24 hours. You take one shot of it for your long acting insulin, and you still need to take a fast acting insulin to cover your corrections and meals. It is provides a fairly constant basal insulin all day long.
