Avatar n tn The Symogi effect is the tendency of the blood sugar to rise as a result of low blood sugar. Low blood sugar can trigger release of hormones such as glucagon that raise blood sugar. The liver would normally respond to declining blood sugar by increasing glycogenolysis, as I discussed above. But insulin inhibits glycogenolysis, and as you may have observed, low blood sugar occurs most often near an insulin peak.
Icecream It is also important to know what to do when you recognize signs of low blood sugar. I suggest you have your blood sugar meter near so you can check things out if you feel this way. Low blood sugar is typically defined as a reading below 70mg/dL so have something handy (orange juice) or other quick sugar sources to quickly raise your blood sugar and follow that sugar burst by having a meal or at least a piece of toast. Good Luck!
Avatar n tn My 6 year old daughter was diagnosed Type 1 diabetes 9 days ago. I am proud to say her blood sugar has been within range every time I have checked over past 5 days. Except... Her blood sugar has tested low all four times I tested either while she was in bath or just out. She has tested between 57 and 68. Is anyone aware of "wrinkled fingers" from exposure to water causing low blood sugar readings? Her bath is just luke warm not REAL hot.
Avatar n tn There's no need to open multiple threads on the same subject. Depending on your system speed, ISP speed, and MedHelp traffic it may take a few minutes before you see your post posted. In regards to "At 2am he was shaky, sweaty, and weak" these are signs of hypoglycemia, low blood sugar. You should call his doctor immediately as his dosage may need adjustment.
Avatar n tn For me, Levemir seemed to work better in that it provided more consistency to my blood sugar levels. I like Levemir. I have switched to 2 shots per day (morning and night) instead of just taking the 1 shot at night, because the 1 shot at night may not cover the 24 hours. In terms of being hungry, have you checked your blood sugar when you are feeling so hungry? Maybe you're low. If that's the case, maybe you can lower the amount Lantus or Levemir.
704262 tn?1247674638 I take Novolog and Lantus insulin in the pen forms. I just started taking them like this about 6 weeks ago. I really like them!!! I take the Novolog 5 units in the morning and 5 units in the evenings, with meals. I also use a sliding scale with it. The Lantus I take just before bedtime. Right now, I'm at 25 units, from 45 units 3 weeks ago!!! I've found that when I take both just before bed, my morning fasting blood sugars are really low...like below 80.
Avatar m tn The blood sugar numbers you provide show your levels to be running slightly elevated most of the time. Normal blood sugar is 65-110. The goal of your treatment is to keep your blood sugar within those limits at all times. I would suggest that you speak with your endocrinologist about how best to adjust your diet and insulin to maintain your blood sugar within normal limits.
Avatar n tn Hi, this is probably reflecting the peaking of the lantus. If 60s are as low as you go, it 's probably not too big a problem. Your fasting blood sugar is not low. Likely what is happening is that you are going a bit low, and then going a bit higher. You may possibly consider changing your lantus dose to the morning instead of the evening. This way the 'peak' will be happening during the day.
Avatar n tn I too have had a couple of bad low sugar episodes... But not from Lantus, but from mistaking my Humalog pen for my Lantus pen. They are not exactly easy to tell apart when you are tired (I take it at night). I was taking 16 units, so imagine the same of Humalog! Wow! Cram those glucose tabs!!! On a pump now (or rather the pod) for the past couple days. Harder to goof up.
Avatar m tn The proper dose of lantus is the one that controls your blood sugar. IF your blood sugar fasting is 270 then you need to increase your lantus dose. Ideally your fasting glucose will be in the 80 - 100 range). Your dr allowing you to have a blood sugar of 180 before taking medications is also keeping you consistently high. Typically people with diabetes will have a correction factor to bring blood sugars down to target.
Avatar f tn it will be best if your breakfast is very low carb ie. eggs or meat and some veges, to avoid further increasing blood sugars too much. Eating may actually help stop the liver putting out sugar, which it does in response to an overnight fast. 6. Set an alarm clock and take an early morning correction of novolog to counter the rising blood sugars and prevent them going too high. 7.
Avatar n tn my blood sugar is 245 b4 bed how do I lower it quickly to a range that is comfortable?
Avatar n tn Before i start exercise i always have an orange juice or energy drinks to prevent low blood sugar. Recently i started weight training exercise. Its more like a group exercise where its 1 hour non stop weight training where u work out every muscle of your body I have noticed that after weight training , blood sugars are high..(complete reverse of cardio when blood sugar usually fall.
Avatar n tn My son has been diabetic for 35 years and has always had a problem with low blood sugar that comes on so rapidly that we have barely enough time to get some nourisment in him. Lately, in the past 3 months, he has had a sezure in bed around 5;00am with out any warning. This of course is very scary for his wife and son. Is there anything that can be done to help detect this coming on when a person is sound asleep?
Avatar n tn Over the last six months he has bottomed out at least 8 times usually at lunch time and the paramedics have had to be called to his workplace. Yesterday when they arrived his Blood Sugar was 19. It seems he drops so quickly that he is unable to treat himself by eating a snack. He keeps himself healthy by eating well and is overall good shape. We have an appointment with a new endriconolgist in the city next week but wanted to be able to discuss options and concerns.
Avatar n tn I find that it is pretty much impossible to drop severely low in that period of time with Lantus, if the dosage is correct and the last blood test was normal. It could be that the oral meds plus the Lantus are too much for him and his dosage needs to be adjusted. If it is happening often, have him test frequently for awhile and write down the results to he has a record of the patterns. Then he needs to work with his doctor to perhaps lower the dosage of one of the medicines.
Avatar n tn If your blood sugar is so high, it means your insulin dose is too low. YOu need to increase your insulin dose. The standard way is to increase it by 2 units every 2 - 3 days until your target levels are reached. Of course better if you have medical / dr. supervision. Low carb diet, weight normalization, and daily exercise will also help reduce how much insulin you need and help in getting your blood sugars lower.
Avatar n tn 30pm regularly I am at a low of 200 in the morning but high of 400 depending on meals by end of day. I am curious about injection sites. Do people with apple bellies have any issue with use of the injection site there. Does it slow the overall use of the insulin? Is there any better use by injecting into thigh instead? also I would like to hear more about people splitting the dose from once at night to once at night and again at maybe noon?
Avatar n tn I am fine but over the last six days I have had to eat 270-350 grams of carbs (yes I said 350 grams of carbs) over 2-3 hours to get my blood sugar over 100. My blood sugar wants to hover between 65-90. Has anyone had anything similar happen? does anyone have any advice?
Avatar n tn The new insulin Lantus and Novolog does seem to allow me to gain weight more easily but I was able a while back to take off some 25 pounds by staying away from FAT and Lower my Carbs. When sugar went low used quick acting sugar like glucose gel or Coke stayed away from cookies candy bars ect to get it up. Excercise helped not pound wise but did loose inches. Best thing was to eat close to Zero Fat and Low Carbs.
Avatar n tn I have just switched from Mixtard/Actrapid to Lantus/Actrapid 3 days ago due to very poor blood sugar control at night and in the morning. The current dosage of Lantus is 15 units in the morning with additional 15 units of Actrapic before evety meal i.e. breakfast, lunch and dinner. Blood sugar level in the morning shoots up to 15-16mmol (fasting), by noon it will remain at 9-12mmol (before lunch) and will gradually comes down to 4-5mmol before dinner.
Avatar n tn Thanks again for the response and I don't have any allergies that I know of. Funnily enough, for the last two days I have had a slight stomach bug and have therefore been unable to eat much. Consequently, my sugar levels at night have been remarkably good - similar to my daytime sugars. I did get a slight increase in my sugar levels this morning - but I suppose this is normal (dawn phenomenon).
Avatar n tn if you are taking NPH before bedtime, for that would be when it would be peaking) and just do a blood test a few nights in a row to see for sure if you are dropping low while you sleep. This can be verified or negated as the reason for the morning glucose rising fairly easily by doing this a few times to see what those middle of the night sugars really are. You can then drink some juice if you ARE low or just roll over and go back to sleep if you aren't.
Avatar n tn This completely threw me off and I ended up being woken up by paramedics 3 times in 1 week. My blood sugar would be normal before bed and then by morning it had gone to 1.8. When I would eat a snack before bed to keep my blood sugar from dropping, I would go high - 13.0-15.0 on average. My doctor has now switched me back to my Novolin NPH and I am still having a hard time getting back on track. I go to bed high, and wake up high. I test at 3 in the morning and I am high, but coming down.
Avatar m tn Diabetes is a disease where the body does not proses carbohydrates properly resulting in high blood sugar (BG). lantus is a background insulin, lasts about 24 hours. lantus just keeps you idling along. When you eat carbs it raises BG as your body digests the food. so you need insulin to lower your BG the same way that food raises BG. When you eat or when your BG is too high you need to take insulin that is faster acting than Lantus.
