Lantus and low blood sugar

Common Questions and Answers about Lantus and low blood sugar

lantus

Icecream The main concern I would have about the addition to Lantus 20 units daily would be the risk of low blood sugar, especially in combination with glimepiride. Both Lantus and glimepiride can cause low blood sugar or hypoglycemia. Just make sure you're watching for the signs of low blood sugar, which are, sudden headache, feeling shaky, and weakness. There are many more signs of hypoglycemia and I encourage you to research it more yourself.
Avatar n tn My 6 year old daughter was diagnosed Type 1 diabetes 9 days ago. I am proud to say her blood sugar has been within range every time I have checked over past 5 days. Except... Her blood sugar has tested low all four times I tested either while she was in bath or just out. She has tested between 57 and 68. Is anyone aware of "wrinkled fingers" from exposure to water causing low blood sugar readings? Her bath is just luke warm not REAL hot.
Avatar n tn The Symogi effect is the tendency of the blood sugar to rise as a result of low blood sugar. Low blood sugar can trigger release of hormones such as glucagon that raise blood sugar. The liver would normally respond to declining blood sugar by increasing glycogenolysis, as I discussed above. But insulin inhibits glycogenolysis, and as you may have observed, low blood sugar occurs most often near an insulin peak.
704262 tn?1247674638 Yes, you can take Novolog and Lantus in separate injections, but they may not be mixed in the same injection or at the same injection site. Generally Novolog is only prescribed if you follow a strict physician-approved routine. If you have a meter and strictly monitor results of various combinations under vary circumstances use of both medications should cause no problems. Be careful using the Novolog because you can easily drop your blood sugar to very low levels.
Avatar n tn I too have had a couple of bad low sugar episodes... But not from Lantus, but from mistaking my Humalog pen for my Lantus pen. They are not exactly easy to tell apart when you are tired (I take it at night). I was taking 16 units, so imagine the same of Humalog! Wow! Cram those glucose tabs!!! On a pump now (or rather the pod) for the past couple days. Harder to goof up.
Avatar n tn This only resulted in the same 9am sugar, and a lower 1pm sugar. I have tried decreasing my Lantus the night before, thinking that its too much, because my sugars are decreasing throghout the day. This didn't change anything. On a non-school day, I didn't notice my sugars reducing during the day, so I don't believe that my Lantus dosage is incorrect. The only thing I can think of that can cause this low sugar at 1pm is the absorbtion rate of my Novolog from breakfast.
Avatar n tn Does anybody have any advice why blood sugar increases after weight training and stays up even 2 hours after dinner ( i do my weight training in the evenings before dinner) and blood sugar only comes down by middle of the night and goes so low that i get hypoglycemia. PLEASE HELP ... thanks i m going crazy trying to figure out how to adjust my insulin..
Avatar m tn Diabetes is a disease where the body does not proses carbohydrates properly resulting in high blood sugar (BG). lantus is a background insulin, lasts about 24 hours. lantus just keeps you idling along. When you eat carbs it raises BG as your body digests the food. so you need insulin to lower your BG the same way that food raises BG. When you eat or when your BG is too high you need to take insulin that is faster acting than Lantus.
Avatar n tn There's no need to open multiple threads on the same subject. Depending on your system speed, ISP speed, and MedHelp traffic it may take a few minutes before you see your post posted. In regards to "At 2am he was shaky, sweaty, and weak" these are signs of hypoglycemia, low blood sugar. You should call his doctor immediately as his dosage may need adjustment.
Avatar n tn The new insulin Lantus and Novolog does seem to allow me to gain weight more easily but I was able a while back to take off some 25 pounds by staying away from FAT and Lower my Carbs. When sugar went low used quick acting sugar like glucose gel or Coke stayed away from cookies candy bars ect to get it up. Excercise helped not pound wise but did loose inches. Best thing was to eat close to Zero Fat and Low Carbs.
Avatar n tn I will finsih up on the lantus as not to waste it and then go on the levemir flex pen never having to worry about the problems I had with the Lantus Auto Pen which will be a thing of the past. Oh your right when I get hungary my sugar is low and never realized that before as I have gone down to 80 at one point. I have to watch it now so I do not go Hypo. because that is a bad feeling in description and not nice to put up with. Thanks friend to or for answering my comment.
Avatar m tn m each day first day it was 56 next day it was 76 and finally on the third day after bring lantus to 27 his sugar level was normal I.e 112, after this of course it goes up to 160 before breakfast, but at least it's not as bad as before! This is a very valuable piece of advice for all those suffering from morning time ..highs.thank you very much !
Avatar n tn This completely threw me off and I ended up being woken up by paramedics 3 times in 1 week. My blood sugar would be normal before bed and then by morning it had gone to 1.8. When I would eat a snack before bed to keep my blood sugar from dropping, I would go high - 13.0-15.0 on average. My doctor has now switched me back to my Novolin NPH and I am still having a hard time getting back on track. I go to bed high, and wake up high. I test at 3 in the morning and I am high, but coming down.
Avatar m tn have u ever heard of a symogi effect. It happens when the sugar goes low at night and ur liver and muscles dump sugar as an emergency mode.....
Avatar n tn Hi, this is probably reflecting the peaking of the lantus. If 60s are as low as you go, it 's probably not too big a problem. Your fasting blood sugar is not low. Likely what is happening is that you are going a bit low, and then going a bit higher. You may possibly consider changing your lantus dose to the morning instead of the evening. This way the 'peak' will be happening during the day.
962625 tn?1247123294 I now only eat proteins, vegetables and low sugar fruits. I drink unsweetened iced tea and water. For 2 weeks I was on 1000 mg of metformin ER per day, and for the last 3 days I've been on 1500 mg of metformin per day. I'm also taking Lantus 12 units per day. I definitely have the dawn phenomenon because my fasting blood sugars are now between 160 and 180 (used to be around 250). After I eat in the morning, it's around 150.
Avatar m tn The proper dose of lantus is the one that controls your blood sugar. IF your blood sugar fasting is 270 then you need to increase your lantus dose. Ideally your fasting glucose will be in the 80 - 100 range). Your dr allowing you to have a blood sugar of 180 before taking medications is also keeping you consistently high. Typically people with diabetes will have a correction factor to bring blood sugars down to target.
Avatar f tn it will be best if your breakfast is very low carb ie. eggs or meat and some veges, to avoid further increasing blood sugars too much. Eating may actually help stop the liver putting out sugar, which it does in response to an overnight fast. 6. Set an alarm clock and take an early morning correction of novolog to counter the rising blood sugars and prevent them going too high. 7.
Avatar n tn I am on a low carb diet and take lantus in low does and novolog when eating meals with more carbs than usual. Usually I can run 30 minutes without a low by just drinking 2 cups of coffee with milk. However, recently I am finding I am going down very low. Tried Drinking juices with carbs, raisins etc. only can run for 2 miles. I weigh 104 lbs 5 ft. and do not want to gain weight since I work hard at keeping my body fit. I weight train 4 times week.
Avatar n tn my blood sugar is 245 b4 bed how do I lower it quickly to a range that is comfortable?
Avatar n tn I have posed this question to both her Endocrinologist and GI specialist, without much confirmation of how the Celiac Disease affects blood sugar control. When she was first diagnosed with Celiac, her sugar was chronically low, especially through the night. Once we adhered to the diet, withing a few months her sugars spiked up and then regulated with insulin changes. Just wondering if others have seen the correlation. Thank you.
Avatar n tn Hi, Yes, those early morning lows are scary. My husband has been T1 for 23 yrs. We've been married 13 yrs. His morning lows came on gradually, he never had any when we met to having them once a month, at least, just a year ago. He was mean and stubborn when in this state. He too, was on three shots a day. His Endo changed his insulin and the morning lows came to a halt. In the last year, he's had...maybe 3?
Avatar m tn I do not know if pressure is high within sleep. Number two sudden shaking and bouncing of sugar, making the sugar high, thougar is not low. Why shaking happens in the morning. Can you please find any solution which medicine might reduce sugar safely without affecting pressure. I have some food allergy too. I cannot take tyramine reach food, which makes blood pressure/ heart rate hight. I do not eat those My idea adrenaline is stressed out and made this sugar problem .
Avatar n tn I find that it is pretty much impossible to drop severely low in that period of time with Lantus, if the dosage is correct and the last blood test was normal. It could be that the oral meds plus the Lantus are too much for him and his dosage needs to be adjusted. If it is happening often, have him test frequently for awhile and write down the results to he has a record of the patterns. Then he needs to work with his doctor to perhaps lower the dosage of one of the medicines.
Avatar n tn If your blood sugar is so high, it means your insulin dose is too low. YOu need to increase your insulin dose. The standard way is to increase it by 2 units every 2 - 3 days until your target levels are reached. Of course better if you have medical / dr. supervision. Low carb diet, weight normalization, and daily exercise will also help reduce how much insulin you need and help in getting your blood sugars lower.
Avatar n tn I found that I would become high after dinner so I would take more Humalog, however, this would make me crave sugar and sweets, it would drop my blood sugar levels, and it seemed like I was eating more just to make sure that I was safe...then I would spike from the sugar and have to start all over again with more insulin. I found that it made it very difficult to maintain my weight despite exercising regularly which was a huge source of frustration for me.
