I have been on lantus since about 2003, and in 2007 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I ve just been reading how lantus may cause cancer . im afraid the lantus may have caused this. did anyone else have anything like this happen? as well im type1 diabetic and my bloodsugers are really up and down all the time and i take a split dose of lantus. my suger will drop and stay down all day or for hours!

I am curious as why you do not mention that Glargine(lantus) does NOT have a license for twice daily usage ,levemir has a licensce for OD and BD and has weight benefits for type 2 patients???? or are you heavily sponsored/involved with the manufactureres of glargine? I am interested.

Hi Dawn, Pizza can be tough to estimate, more because the carb content can vary so much from slice to slice and pizza to pizza. But although I'm just a mom like you, and not a doctor, it sounds like it's not just pizza causing high blood sugar. You didn't say what sort of long-lasting insulin she's on-- is it Novalin? Or Lantus/glargine? If you haven't tried Lantus (aka glargine) yet, I would strongly recommend talking to your endo about it.

Anyone out there on Lantus, and have you heard about this and will you stop using Lantus due to this news?? What bothers me about this news is that the study seems a bit shaky...but, I also feel, where there is smoke, can fire be far behind?? I, myself, am thinking of changing to Levemir, at least until the experts decide what to do. Only because, I have enough health problems, if I can save myself some anguish, I think I will...What's your take on this issue??

Montefiori Medical Center (Bronx, New York) performed an in-depth study of 240 women receiveing Lantus (insulin glargine) during pregnancy. The results were published in the Journal of Reproductive Medicine, April, 2009 (4) 208-10. They found the drug to be well-tolerated and advised continuing the use of Lantus during pregnancy. PubMed has no studies whatsoever that substantiate an adverse affect on pregnancy.

My blood sugars are out of whack and it just seems to be impossible to get them back to normal! I have just started taking glargine/lantus...but the control is still bad. Also, for those that have the pump...how is it and how has it affected your life style?

The Lantus / insulin glargine is a very good well-tolerated product. The injections are painless. It is often prescribed together with metformin.

Lantus (insulin Glargine) is a very SLOW release insulin, a so-called "24-hour" insulin. Because it does not rapidly alter glucose levels it is safe to use when driving. It isn't adviseable to increase the dose of Metformin. Other insulins have the tendency to rapidly (comparatively) alter levels of conscious and situational awareness. It is often prescribed together with Metformin and Glipozide. I would also hazard a guess that weight control is an issue.

as I never heard of these problems with Lantus. Lantus is a 24 hour basal insulin that starts to work in an hour after injected and lasts most of the day without peaking. Also, I have never heard of a Lantus pen but have a call into our local rep to ask. My teenage son has Type 1 diabetes and there is never a dull moment with diabetes, is there.

my doctor had me start by removing only 1 unit of my morning dose of Lantus, and then that night I took 1 unit of Lantus. That meant that I was only 1 unit shy of my total for the day. Then I waited 2 days to see what the pattern would be (you could even wait longer to see what happens). Then I did the same procedure again, removing another unit from my morning dose of Lantus and adding it to my evening dose. And wait several days to see what happens in the mornings.

t make sense why an A1c would be that high if he rarely shows high blood sugars on his monitors. Is he testing regularly? Is he on Lantus/glargine? (That really helped stabilize my daughter.) Let us know, and good luck with this challenge.

I learned everything about home testing from the people experienced with diabetic kitties on this site. Just type in www.felinediabetesd.com and look for Lantus (Glargine) links. If you could check around and ask for a Vet who is experienced with home testing, it would be better. Most Vets for some reason don't encourage home testing, but without it is like testing blind. My doctor just changed me to a new insulin - Glargine (Lantus) and I am sleeping now. They say that Melatonin helps but it usually only gets you to sleep and then you are free to wake up 4 hours later. If you are really suffering from sleep deprivation, try getting up at same time each day no matter what time you go to bed. When you get exhausted, you will sleep and you may start to correct the cycle.

My 17-year-old type-1 daughter is a competitive swimmer, and I know that during her swim season she has to reduce her insulin by a fair amount, and still she sometimes gets lows that can really take it out of her. She's also on the pen system, which has worked well for her. Is your son on Lantus (glargine) at night? When she switched to that, with Novolog at mealtimes, her numbers stablized and she has since then had fewer lows during workouts.

She complained of polidypsia, dry mouth, weight loss. Insulinotherapy was initiated with glargine, ten units at bedtime (glycemic value before aministration was 169) after reiceiving 6 units of aspart imediately (7 pm). Next day a fasting value of 140 mg/dl. Bedtime value (2 hours postprandial ) 269. After 10 U glargine, fasting value 120 mg/dl. Glycemic variation are very important and depend on the thyroid status. What is your opnion?

I have noticed that no matter what I do the lantus stings after I inject it before I go to bed. Is this common? Is there any tricks anyone has learned that has helped them?

I am a type 1A diabetic with normal insulin sensitivity and predictable bg responses to insulin doses. Until now. I went on a reducing diet (high protein, next to 0 carbs, increased exercise) but never decreased my once daily PM dose of Lantus (10 units.) Immediately my AM bg's jumped to over 200 and stayed there. No hypoglycemia during sleep (I never woke up, anyway.)I could bring my daily bg's down with my shortacting insulin.

I am not a phycan, but i would highly suggest that you dcusss this change with your endocronolgist as you might have to do this over several days as lantus is a 24 hr insurlin. The other is that lantus really doies not have a peak so it should not effect your luch time injuection.

Lantus is very slow-acting and really rarely causes severe hypoglycemia, in my experience, for warning symptoms occur long before it gets severe. However, if the warning symptoms are not listened to, I have personally noticed that the hypoglycemia that eventually happens makes me feel worse than some of the quick-acting insulins do.

And as for the sweats about a half hour after taking Lantus, there IS a slight peak action with Lantus, although this peak action for most people is several hours after taking the Lantus. In my case, I usually take my Lantus at about 6 am, and I notice a peak that causes my glucose levels to drop by about 8 am. This happens even if I have not taken any Novolog or eaten breakfast (sometimes I wait until I get to work to take Novolog and eat breakfast), so it has to be the Lantus peaking.
