Lamotrigine and mania

Common Questions and Answers about Lamotrigine and mania

lamictal

Avatar m tn However, lamotrigine works best in keeping depression away and does little in deterring mania. The mania you have been having may have nothing to do with lamotrigine but because it doesn't do anything for it when it comes on. Other mood stabilizers, like lithium and Depakote work well for mania. I would discuss the option of adding one of them to the lamotrigine.
1756969 tn?1332437163 For example my doctor prescribed the birth control pill to try and regulate my cycle, the pharmacist caught that we had to increase the lamotrigine because BCpills decrease it and they phoned the doctor for an increase to the lamotrigine (generic Lamictal). There is a section under "Health Information" for bipolar but unfortunately not for borderline, but if you google DSM borderline personality disorder a few sites come up and give you definitions.
1114269 tn?1258680912 I have tried Seroquel and had a bad cardiac (tachycardia) response to it, and that class of drugs in general is not good for me (have had same problems). I'm also having problems with Ativan at the moment, have been taking 1mg at night every night for about 8 months. If I don't take one, I have the most horrible violent nightmares ever. So I don't know what to do.
2176476 tn?1338605299 ve been taking Lamictal for about 7 months, along with a secondary anti-psychotic to after a major mania episode. I started on Seroquel for about 3 months, and the combination seemed to work well. I had to D/C the Seroquel when my insurance changed and it wasn't covered. Since then I've tried first perphenazine (4 weeks), then thiothixene (six weeks), but they were too sedating and I was having a problem working.
6681951 tn?1383707622 I am 24 years old, after severe depression/mania/psychosis from age 12-20 I tried many Antidepressants/mood stabilizers/anti psychotics and even ECT(with no effect), I finally got the right balance of 225mg of Venlafaxine in the morning(8am) and 300mg of Lamotrigine at night(8pm). I have been stable with limited mania/depression and no psychotic features for 6 years now.
3140085 tn?1342843508 If I had exhausted all avenues and resources to afford a psychiatrist to prescribe for my bipolar 2, the medication I would substitute for depakote would be lamotrigine (Lamictal) it is generic in Canada now, so it may be generic in Mexico. It is closer in action and proven to help with bipolar depression more than mania (doesn't do as well for mania). You have to titrate up slowly or you can get a fatal rash. If you do that the risk of getting the dreaded rash is next to nil. Good luck.
Avatar m tn Anger can sometimes be part of an agitated mixed state which has the down quality of depression and the speeded up quality of mania and it seems like you are angry at the world. Only a psychiatrist would understand this in full but these are some ideas that you might speak to them about.
Avatar f tn Thanks for the responses! Ill just enjoy it whiler I have it then! And hopefully if will just get better and better and better! Now, if I had something for my awful memory! I use to have a very sharp memory. But my STM has went straight down-hill in the last few years.
1806584 tn?1316208037 I am on Risperdal for my mania, and I think it works great for that. Yes though taper down! I am sure you can find some other med that works for you to replace the abilify also??? Be careful with yourself...please.
1571730 tn?1314725245 I already knew I was bipolar and as did my doctor. The first medication they put me on citalopram, ended up causing really bad halluciantions and to me hearing voices, which I guess stemed from a manic episode (honestly when I go through my manic fits I'm never giddy I"m all irrate/irritable. They ended up putting me on bupropion 50mgs which did nothing for me now I'm going to I think they said 100mg twice a day or possibly 200mgs once a day.
574118 tn?1305135284 Best to ask a clinician for these kind of questions. Any answer I post comes from sources on the internet that are written by psychiatrists or statements made by my psychopharmocologist who has specific knowledge not my own judgement and must ultimately be answered by your psychiatrist. Yes anti-depressents can potentially worsen mania. All psychiatrist would agree but sometimes an anti-depressent is neccessary in bipolar as an adjunct. Mania is rare by itself. That's true.
Avatar m tn I'm in the Uk and currently taking Quetiapine, Depakote and Lamotrigine. The Quetiapine for me was prescribed for rage and agitation, I don't feel any anti depressant properties from it, but it has saved my life. Lamotrigine was prescribed 7 weeks ago and I feel a lot better, I am doing things that I didn't think I'd ever feel I could do again. Nobody has ever specified what type of Bp I have, I have symptoms from across the spectrum, I have mixed episodes.
505907 tn?1258369340 However, skin rash occurs in 10% of patients treated with lamotrigine and the risk of rash is related to rapid dose escalation and concomitant use of valproate. In approximately 1% of those that develop rash, it can progress to Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis, both of which can be life threatening.
5544493 tn?1369608788 Well, as thatquietgirl said, it really depends on the individual. Part of it also depends on whether you're BP I or II, and whether your main problems are depression, mania, or a lot of both, and whether you have psychosis in the mix. Lamotrigine and carbamazepine are generics, for the record, and Abilify and Seroquel are still under patent and so there aren't any generics yet.
1067022 tn?1257773762 Yeah I do stuff like this like apparently I withdrew the last $20 in my bank account at some point before I intended to. So I went to an ATM and saw it wasn't there and was like well f*ck this was a wasted trip and then I looked in my wallet later and there the $20 was. I also put loafs of bread in the sink before without being aware of it.
Avatar n tn hey my diagnoses is bipolar depression i take 150 zoloft,50naltrexone,60mg inderol,trileptal 900,stelazine 6mg,cogentin 0.
574118 tn?1305135284 what i really wonder about is whether i am being medicated correctly because my pdoc chose AP's and still does contrary to MS that I detested and tried lithium with no success on the contrary kept erring in the house like mad. So I read today: ---somebody who goes untreated could go from a diagnosis of bipolar II to bipolar I as the disorder progresses.--- therefore my concern was depression for 9 consecutive years (can't get up except by a tricyclic AD).
Avatar f tn If you can take prozac alone, it is less likely you have bipolar because those types of drugs can spring a bipolar person into mania if they are not prescribed with a mood stabilizer like lamotrigine or lithium. Once you get medicaid it would be worth going to see a psychiatrist and get tested. For cheap drugs check out Walmart. I think, although I could be wrong, that generic prozac is on their list of discounted drugs. Under $10 if I remember correctly.
Avatar f tn Only a few interactions between lamotrigine and other drugs have been identified. Lamotrigine increases the plasma level of carbamazepine and its metabolites. Carbamazepine lowers the concentration of lamotrigine in the blood. Valproate doubles the plasma level of lamotrigine, and the level of valproate is decreased by about 25% in people taking lamotrigine. Phenobarbital and primidone lower the plasma level of lamotrigine by about 40%.
Avatar f tn Hey all, my name is Daniel and I'm 21 years young. In about 2011 or so (i was like 17 I wanna say) I was perscribed Lamotrigine for bipolar disorder. Taking that medication seems to have been the stupidest thing I've ever done in my life. Or, the most coincidental occurance I've ever heard of. Just a week after tapering daily to the regular dose, I began to feel what I called "crippling anxiety".
967168 tn?1477584489 I really hope this Lamictal helps you and makes you feel better, and that mania doesn't become a problem. Can't say i know much about Lamictal but i hear it is a good anti-depressant property's which might be great. Be sure to let us know how it goes.
1487057 tn?1288157745 Hi, I am at present on Lithium and Cymbalta plus Lamotrigine This combination seems to work well for me... I can be 100% sure this does not bring on Mania for me as it is something I miss..... the only issue I do have still is Depression but I know this is caused by some personal issue which is going on in my life at present. I hope this helps in some way. Clive.
Avatar f tn I have never heard of antidepressant mania passing, just getting worse. Have you switched up your mood stabilizer/anti-psychotic. Because sometimes it takes the right combo before it works. I have only ever been on lamotrigine (can't take Lithium due to previous kidney issues). As an antipsychotic I tried Risperadol - worked great - made me lactate - deal breaker. Seroquel - zombie. Geodone - anorexic, tired.
574118 tn?1305135284 As I stated it worked fine for me on both mania and depression. I was stable at 325 mg. for close to ten years. It did at the end worsen mania but that's an extremely high dose. But in the meantime it was working well the whole time on both manic and depression. As for mood stabilizers it is typical to change after a decade for some people at least. It does happen every now and then.
Avatar f tn I am also on 200mg of lamotrigine and 50mg of Trazodone. I took my first full dose of Abilify on Friday the 6th and today is the 11th The Abilify is working about 70%. I have been crying more, I wrote a big long blog about how life is useless because I can't work full time and be a parent and all those other 'normal' things the drug companies promise you that you can do if you just take their drug. I am feeling not depressed but more morose, and just generally in a slump.
