Lamotrigine and epilepsy

Common Questions and Answers about Lamotrigine and epilepsy

lamictal

Avatar f tn Your doctor will start you on low dose of lamotrigine and gradually increase your dose, not more than once every 1 to 2 weeks. You may be more likely to develop a serious rash if you take a higher starting dose or increase your dose faster than your doctor tells you that you should. Your first doses of medication may be packaged in a starter kit that will clearly show you the right amount of medication to take each day during the first 5 weeks of your treatment.
Avatar m tn carbamazepine, clobazam, lamotrigine, levetiracetam, oxcarbazepine and topiramate. These medications rarely stop the seizures completely but reduce the frequency and severity of them. I hope this helps, my prayers are with you and your son.
Avatar f tn i agree that it's very odd for a doc to leave the med decision up to you. i don't have epilepsy (my son does); but i've been on both of these meds. i've been on the lamotrigine for depression (it didn't work) and i currently take the topamax to control migranes. yes, topamax is also called "topastupid" and "dopamax" because i swear i loose IQ points on a daily basis. LOL!! Good luck.
1756969 tn?1332437163 ve been taking Lamotrigine for over a year. It caused no changes in my weight or appetite. And I swear by the medication.
Avatar n tn I weaned myself off of that once. It was hard, but mostly when I got down to 50mg. I was so dizzy and sick, and it felt like the room was spinning, and I couldn't walk because of it. Good luck!
Avatar f tn What are you on? I take a med called lamotrigine I have epilepsy and this is what we switched to I'm doing good with it I'm 8 week's today and baby is doing well!! You should see if that's something you could take!
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed about a year ago with Epilepsy and put on Lamictal. My question is, when God willing the time comes, what is the track record with these drugs and pregnancy and breast feeding?
Avatar n tn Recently I've been diagnosed with a bit of Bipolar Disorder. My doctor put me on Lamotrigine, a mood stabilizer normally used to treat epilepsy, seizures. I've experienced a little bit of blurred vision every now and then from it but wonder why I'm having a small trace of vaginal bleeding every once in a while. I'm on Portia as a birth control method and I haven't had my period for a while now.
Avatar f tn I take Depakote before i got pregnant and was taking prenatals just in case. Then when me and my husband found out i was pregnant, i was switched to Lamotrigine which is the safest for pregnant women with seizures. I know its really hard for us women with seizures now that we are carrying a life inside, we need to be extra careful. I understand you...
Avatar f tn I'm 20 years old and have been diagnosed with epilepsy for two years now. When I was diagnosed I had a few Grand Mal seizures and was perscribed lamotragine. However I then stupidly didnt take them and was fit free for a year, then I had another seizure again grand mal. since then I have started taking the medicine given to me.
Avatar n tn Absence seizures respond to sodium valproate, lamotrigine etc. consult a pediatrician for evaluation and management. Hope this helps. Take care.
Avatar m tn I want to start with the drug that I have the best chance of maintaining my intellect, fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and personalty.
Avatar f tn Someone from another forum mentioned that his/her dad also has epilepsy and has the same problems. I'm hoping its just the meds, but that persons dad is 50 and I'm only 20. I'm afriad mine might have gotten pretty bad really fast, considering my age and the time I've taken my meds vs. that persons dad.
574118 tn?1305135284 s an interesting theory and would help explain how anticonvulsants can help epilepsy, bipolar, and migraine, and would help explain some of the symptom overlap. TL/DR: Tegretol and Depakote are still first line treatments for BP I, and they as well as Lamictal are approved as mood stabilizers.
Avatar f tn Only a few interactions between lamotrigine and other drugs have been identified. Lamotrigine increases the plasma level of carbamazepine and its metabolites. Carbamazepine lowers the concentration of lamotrigine in the blood. Valproate doubles the plasma level of lamotrigine, and the level of valproate is decreased by about 25% in people taking lamotrigine. Phenobarbital and primidone lower the plasma level of lamotrigine by about 40%.
Avatar f tn I am on keppra and lamotrigine (sp?) Lamotrigine seems to help with the anger issues keppra was causing.
Avatar f tn yes app, keppra works well for both, i have just started this medication as i have been on sodium valporte and tegretol for many years, im slowly coming of the tegretol and going onto keppra, and if everything gos well they will then start to reduce the soduim valporte, i hope this has helped you in some way, if you like i can keep you informed of how things are going.
Avatar m tn I'm currently on the combo. It's working alright for me. I still get frequent manic episodes and psychosis (I'm schizoaffective, but neither drug does anything for psychosis anyways) but I've only had one depressive episode in the last 5 years, and I'm a rapid cycler.I had about 10 depressive episodes in 2-3 years and they stopped completely when I started lamotrigine (well, apart from the one, but it was work related).
Avatar f tn Hello, I am a first time pregnant mom to be at 35 and I have some complex med problems that require maintenance meds. I'm epileptic with a small brain tumor and taking Lamotrigine, which I know isn't great for the baby. But I'm low dose (200 mgs a day) and a seizure will most likely cause more injury to the baby than stopping. I also have an anxiety disorder and chronic pain due to a failed knee surgery a few years ago.
Avatar m tn In the USA, it is given for anxiety not epilepsy.. 6 mg/day is highest dose for anxiety. You may be tolerant and require the 4.5 mg for your anxiety. Do not lower your dose on your clonazepam without your doctor knowing about it, if you've taken clonazepam for a long time because you will withdraw. Since it works for you like it did for me, you are ok. Do not worry. Your doctors who are giving you this medication in combination with your other medications are prescribing correctly.
Avatar f tn I really feel better mentally, no depression or pain, with lamotrigine, and I am so sad that I might have to give it up. I just saw my doctor yesterday and since it is February, she thinks that may be it is just a stomach virus... I need to live my life without having to pull over at gas station rest areas constantly! If this is caused by the lamotrigine, will I "adjust" and the diarrhea go away, or am I just really too sensitive to this medication?
Avatar f tn when he saw his neuro and therapist he should have told them what he was taking, that way they would make sure that the meds they prescribe don't react badly to each other. i think you should try get them together to have a chat with both of them. there are some anti-epileptics out there that actually act as mood stabilizers as well, the two that i know of is sodium valproate and lamotrigine. i'm not too sure if they can be used for dual purpose but it's worth a shot right?
