Lamotrigine and carbamazepine

Common Questions and Answers about Lamotrigine and carbamazepine

lamictal

Avatar f tn Lamotrigine increases the plasma level of carbamazepine and its metabolites. Carbamazepine lowers the concentration of lamotrigine in the blood. Valproate doubles the plasma level of lamotrigine, and the level of valproate is decreased by about 25% in people taking lamotrigine. Phenobarbital and primidone lower the plasma level of lamotrigine by about 40%. Oral contraceptives can lower the plasma level of lamotrigine by as much as 50%.
5544493 tn?1369608788 re BP I or II, and whether your main problems are depression, mania, or a lot of both, and whether you have psychosis in the mix. Lamotrigine and carbamazepine are generics, for the record, and Abilify and Seroquel are still under patent and so there aren't any generics yet. Anyway, lamotrigine (brand name Lamictal) is one of the best for BP II where depression is the main issue, although it's approved for BPI.
Avatar f tn I was also given a choice by my neurologist on which pills to have it was either Lamotrogine or Carbamazepine, I tried the Carbamazepine and found it didn't help. I feel like a normal human being since being on Lamotrogine. The only side affects I had were in the beginning and that was just being more tired than usual, this passed within about 3 weeks. I cannot fault Lamotrogine. Hope all goes well for you.
Avatar m tn Lamotrigine has been successful in controlling rapid cycling and mixed bipolar states in people who have not received adequate relief from lithium, carbamazepine and/or valproate. It also appears that lamotrigine has significantly more antidepressant potency than either carbamazepine or valproate. Lamotrigine is also useful as part of the treatment of some people with major (unipolar) depression.

Avatar f tn but i would like to share this with you lamictal and trileptal do affect birth control pills and vise verse i.e. you can get pregnant using these as they reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills by 40%to 50% ,,,,,,,,,,also (which done me a great harm) the birth control pills reduce the effect of BP meds up to 50% also. i read on some site (but i cannot remember which) that birth control pills can affect most of psychiatric meds.
Avatar m tn carbamazepine, clobazam, lamotrigine, levetiracetam, oxcarbazepine and topiramate. These medications rarely stop the seizures completely but reduce the frequency and severity of them. I hope this helps, my prayers are with you and your son.
Avatar n tn These are anti-epilepsy drugs such as valproate, carbamazepine, lamotrigine, phenytoin, gabapentin, and pregabalin; muscle relaxants such as clonazepam and baclofen; tricyclic antidepressants such as carbamazepine, amitriptyline, and nortriptyline. The other option is surgery: Stereotactic radiosurgery, cutting or destroying part of nerve or removing blood vessel or tumor pressing it. If there is a tumor or blood vessel causing the symptoms then medical treatment will not help.
Avatar f tn I am taking carbamazepine, occasional lamotrigine and have recently been advised by my neurologist to add pregabalin, 2 daily. At present, my TN has shifted from the usual position from the left side of my face and down the left side of my nose to a new and very painful path from the scalp (front forehead) and down the left side of my nose. I cannot bear to touch my scalp without bringing on a spasm. Is it normal for trigeminal neuralgia to change position in this way? Thank you.
Avatar f tn Meds are pretty individual. Lamotrigine would be the one I'd ask for. It has a low side effect profile and is good more for the downs than the ups. If you are up more than you are down - lithium may be a better choice. Although with lithium you will need regular blood testing. Depakene is the other mood stabilizer but I know very little about it except it can make your hair fall out. I had a hard go around with the antipsychotics. Lots of side effects But finally Abilify works great for me.
Avatar f tn reports have claimed that carbamazepine, lamotrigine, gabapentin, corticosteroids or surgical procedures may be of help, but none of these have really been of much help. I find that the only thing that even comes close to helping me is either sitting on a very dark shower floor and having the water hit the top of my head, and then laying in a very dark, quiet room...laying on the side where the pain starts ( my left eye ). Other than that...I seriously hope we all find relief soon.
Avatar f tn I really feel better mentally, no depression or pain, with lamotrigine, and I am so sad that I might have to give it up. I just saw my doctor yesterday and since it is February, she thinks that may be it is just a stomach virus... I need to live my life without having to pull over at gas station rest areas constantly! If this is caused by the lamotrigine, will I "adjust" and the diarrhea go away, or am I just really too sensitive to this medication?
Avatar f tn Hi all, saw MS nurse yesterday and told her about my muscles cramping and leg and foot spasms. She has suggested I start carbamazepine to see if it helps. Im wondering if anyone has been on this and if it works. What sort of side effects it has? I see this would be used in trigeminal neuralgia too, which I think Ive had a couple of attacks already.
Avatar f tn For medical treatment of trigeminal neuralgia several types of drugs are tried either singly or in combination. These are anti-epilepsy drugs such as valproate, carbamazepine, lamotrigine, phenytoin, gabapentin, and pregabalin; muscle relaxants such as clonazepam and baclofen; tricyclic antidepressants such as carbamazepine, amitriptyline, and nortriptyline.Sometimes a MRI is done to find out if there is a tumor pressing on the nerve. In this case surgery is the only treatment.
Avatar n tn Hi, my girlfrien is 19 years old, she´s messial temporal sclerosis post neucisticercosis and she´s epileptic, she´s taking carbamazepine (1gr/day even somedays she doen´t take the complete dosis because she´s student and the sleepiness interfer with her studdies). i would like to know if she may have any seizure during the sex?
Avatar f tn Your doctor will start you on low dose of lamotrigine and gradually increase your dose, not more than once every 1 to 2 weeks. You may be more likely to develop a serious rash if you take a higher starting dose or increase your dose faster than your doctor tells you that you should. Your first doses of medication may be packaged in a starter kit that will clearly show you the right amount of medication to take each day during the first 5 weeks of your treatment.
Avatar f tn My son is 25 and has seizure disorder. This past Thanksgiving, he had a total of 5 seizures over 24 hours necessitating a hospital visit and stay. They put him on a third seizure medication (Lamotrigine). I spoke with a neurologist at USF who didn't like that a 3rd medication was added before his previous two were maxed out--he was already on Keppra (max dosage) and Depakote (sprinkles--very low dose), so she titrated him up on the Depakote so we could get rid of the Lamotrigine.
1204528 tn?1588786333 I am currently taking carbamazepine for BP disorder type II, and I noticed it's getting hard to breath, l had the same symptom a few months back, went to several especialists but none of them found any respiratory or circular problem. It turned out to be zopiclone I was taking to sleeping. I am not taking zopiclone anymore. Now the only medications I am taking are carbamazepine for BP II and anti inflammatory for my sciatica. Any ideas?
Avatar f tn Hi, You want to post this follow up question for Dr. Nassim in the Neurosurgery Forum, not Neurology. This way he can answer your questions with the additional info you have provided. Good Luck.
1756969 tn?1332437163 I take lamotrigine - 200mg -- and it has worked well for me with no side effects. It is usually weight neutral meaning it doesn't affect your appetite. I have taken other mood stabilizers and didn't like the side effects - lithium, bad hand tremor, diarrhea, vomiting; depakote, hair loss, weight gain; seroquel, extreme sleepiness Do remember that this is my experience and yours may be different.
Avatar f tn I was also on epilim and was taken off because of the weight gain, im now on lamotrigine, at the begining I found this to really lift my mood but then it wasnt enough so I was added some other medication, cant remember the name, I was ok for months but now for some reason I have started to cycle again.
1756969 tn?1332437163 ve been taking Lamotrigine for over a year. It caused no changes in my weight or appetite. And I swear by the medication.
Avatar f tn I take Carbamazepine for ATN and have a new, rare reoccurring rash on my legs. My Dr. says they are not related, but when I researched it there were a few articles that indicated Carbamazepine could cause the rash.
Avatar f tn And does Paxil interact with Diazepam and does paxil interact with carbamazepine? Does carbamazepine interact with diazepam and vice versa? Please help! Write me back! I am a single mom of two small children who is scared that something will happen to me.
