Common Questions and Answers about Lamictal in bipolar disorder

lamictal

Avatar f tn My new doctor thinks I've been misdiagnosed for depression/anxiety. He says this based on everything I described to him and because general SSRI's just cause me more problems than good (high anxiety and side effects). He says I'm not BiPolar, but that I have a mood disorder, on the BiPolar Spectrum... maybe unipolar. He says he does not know exactly what kind of mood disorder yet, just that I have one. So he's trying me out on Lamictal.
Avatar f tn I saw two new doctors and was told that since I have a mood disorder I should not be on anti-depressants and should be taking Lamictal. I was later diagnosed with Bipolar I and BPD. Lamictal has worked great for me. It did take a while for it to "kick in". I've been at 200 mg for 5 years now. I feel "normal". I barely have any side effects and don't feel medicated like I did with the anti-depressants. I think you should listen to your new doctor.
Avatar f tn was diagnosed as being bipolar. The prescription that he got was a generic form of Lamictal. I visited him today & saw the pill bottle, it says "41" but there were only 9 pills left in the container. The date was Dec. 19 - that's only been 7 days ago & it says to take "1 for the lst 7 days & then take 2 a day". I asked him why there were so few in the bottle & he said the pharmacy didn't have enough to fill the entire prescription.
Avatar n tn t like the sexual side effects. Lamictal, though, seems to only be approved for treating bipolar disorder and epilepsy. I have never been diagnosed with bipolar disorder nor do I have epilepsy. Is my psychiatrist really going out on a limb prescribing Lamictal for anxiety/depression?
1756969 tn?1332437163 Borderline Personality Disorder is primarily relationship problems with high drama, fear of abandonment and mood fluxuations. Bipolar is a mood stabilization disorder with mania or hypomania (lower level mania) alternating with depression. Lamictal is a antiseizure med that is also a mood stabilizer that is primarily used for bipolar and seizure disorders. Some pdocs give lamictal to people with BPD to help with the mood fluxuations (lower mood changes than with bipolar).
Avatar f tn ve just found out I am pregnant and I have been taking Abilify (Aripirazole) and Lamictal (Lamotrigine) for the last year, against bipolar disorder, my doctor recommended to reduce it slowly and then stop it. He said that I have taken it so far wouldn't harm the baby. I am still very worried and wondered if anybody has any experience with this. Thank you!
Avatar f tn I have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder for the first time at age 25. My dr had started me on lamictal and cymbalta (I also have fibromyalgia) I'm really just looking for information about it to understand it better and something my husband can hear or read to get him to understand that it is something I can not control even though in know when I'm doing it. Any suggestions?
Avatar f tn I take Lamictal for bipolar disorder. It was a suggestion made to me by my doctor after we tried every other drug on the market. It was a decision WE made together. He gave me some reading material and we discussed the side effects. Many of the side effects were similar to that of the other meds that I had already been on. The main issue for me is that it has raised my sugar levels. So I have to watch what I eat more than what I did before. BUT, .....
994257 tn?1266242692 I am currently taking 400mg of Lamictal ODT for bipolar II disorder and to help in the treatment of migraines my periods are coming later and later every month and they are really light. Is this common for this medication. Also I'm not actively trying to get pregnant but if I do what are the risks of staying on it or should I stop immediately?
Avatar f tn No bipolar disorder doesn't cause seizures and Lamictal and Depakoate are actually anti-convulsants. However, some medications as an adverse side effect can cause seizures. She needs to see a neurologist and get an EEG to determine the cause of the seizures. If it comes from one of the medications they can change it to another in the same class.
739988 tn?1386672969 t know whether what you are experiencing is a seperate anxiety disorder or just that the Lamictal has not reached a proper dosage in which social avoidance can be a part of bipolar. Since you have a psychiatrist you trust now why not speak to them more about that.
Avatar n tn The first is that people with bipolar require more sleep in general. The second thing being that when bipolar people sleep, they do not rest. I know personally that both are true for me. I can sleep for eight hours and feel like I only slept for ten minutes or didn't sleep at all. Also, depression can put you to bed for days at a time doing nothing but sleep. Depression drags ever last bit of desire out of you. For me personally, when I'm depressed the whole world is weighing me down.
Avatar f tn Even though he has not diagnosed you bipolar you are on bipolar medications (Lamictal and Seroquel). Does he know you quit taking the Lamictal? I wonder why he has you on those if you are not diagnosed BP? Also, why Beta Blockers? Is that supposed to help your anxiety? Have you contacted someone to get a second opinion yet? There are good psychiatrist and bad ones as well. Trust me, I had a really bad one and it almost cost me my life! Keep up posted!
Avatar f tn combination of medications for someone who needs to suppress menstrual periods and is also taking Lexapro and Lamictal for Major Depression with Bipolar 2 ? My daughter tried taking Yasmin continually (not taking the "fake" week of pills for 3 months) but experiences almost daily cramping, hot and cold flashes, nausea. The gyne was stumped as to which BC pill would be best, as Yasmin is for the PMDD, but causes the side effects for her.
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder since '95, but through a lot of research and getting completely sober I really feel that I actually have Borderline Personality Disorder with Severe Depression and Anxiety. I just got prescribed Lamictal because I've tried everything over the years and nothing works for long. I'm still on Topomax, Geodon, Prozac and Desyrel.
Avatar n tn I was diagnosed with PTSD and mood disorder. I am on a host of drugs that leave me zombie-like. I am taking Lamictal, Seroquel, Klonopin, Trazadone and Lithium. My Lithium dosage is 1050 mg a day. I am so tired and the weight gain and hair falling out are just two of the most troubling symptoms. My dr. doesn't even want me on an anti-depressant which I think will help. I am missing the occasional glass of wine. Do you think it is okay to have one while on these meds?
Avatar f tn I have been on many many medications over the past 2 years. I switched from Paxil, Prozac, Abilify, Seroquel, Zoloft, Clonazepam, Lorazepam, Effexor, Trazadone, Lamictal, Buspar, and many, many, others I just can't remember them all. Yeah, I'd have to say that maybe, just maybe, all these medications just may have screwed with my physiology at least a little, but what do I know, I was just a mere LAB RAT!
1540869 tn?1351214013 finally a psychiatrist that my dad saw (who is also bipolar) specialized in bipolar and diagnosed me with bipolar 2 and put me on lamictal. 75 mg of lamictal is a very low dose so i wouldnt give up on it yet. It's a good medication with little side effects (be careful of the rash tho)- but I'm on 500 mg of it now. I'm rapid cycling and med resistant so I've had to have med dosage adjustments throughout the years but since I was put on Lamictal.
Avatar f tn Namaste, Wellbutrin is an SSRI usually used to treat depression. Both Lamictal and Topomax are mood stablizers, usually used in the treatment of bipolar disorder and finally, Klonopin is a benzodiazepine, usually used to treat anxiety and panic attacks. After six years of being diagnoised with bipolar I disorder, SAD, GAD, panic attacks and PTSD, I realized that it was a long and tedious process to find the right combination of medications to stabilize my conditions.
