Lamictal for mood stabilization

Common Questions and Answers about Lamictal for mood stabilization

lamictal

Avatar f tn m told can cause anxiety) and Lamictal (mood stabilizer for Bipolar). Buspar works great for me and is the kind of med that you can feel accumulate in your system. That way, you don't suffer if missing a dose. I take 10mg 3 times a day. It used to just be 2x, but my job got stressful and we made an adjustment. I was originally given Xanax which was a huge mistake on my GP's part.
1756969 tn?1332437163 Lamictal is a antiseizure med that is also a mood stabilizer that is primarily used for bipolar and seizure disorders. Some pdocs give lamictal to people with BPD to help with the mood fluxuations (lower mood changes than with bipolar).
739988 tn?1386672969 t been studied for mood stabilization yet and I need a mood stabilizer as well. Out of the mood stabilizers, Lithium and Depakoate are more likely to cause weight gain than Lamictal so Lamictal might be one viable option.
202665 tn?1248806733 I am currently on Abilify alone for mood stabilization. I do find it activating rather than sedating. I however wish I had something really activating to get me up out of my depression and super low to no energy which it doesn't seem to help me with.
1255530 tn?1269867619 However I do know for myself and many people with schizoaffective disorder, a mood stabilizer in addition to an antipsychotic is needed (that includes for me now) and I found Lamictal to be the only mood stabilizer that was really effective on rapid cycling but as always each person's experience various though I believe the antipsychotic/mood stabilizer combination with schizoaffective disorder is generally what's effective as both work together to address different aspects of psychosis
Avatar f tn I have been on Lamictal for about 4 years, it works very well for me. I have been on all kind of medication before, but lamictal is the one that get me back on my own feet. I am also on seroquel (a very low dose), but I am taking more for helping me to sleep. I have tried olanzapine before, and like ILADVOCATE, I also have a big problem with the side effect (weight gain).
574118 tn?1305135284 It depends on the specific person but Seroquel does have strong mood stabilization effects. It was complex for myself as a person with schizoaffective disorder or people I knew with bipolar with psychotic features as there a mood stabilizer and an antipsychotic was neccessary. With straight bipolar Seroquel being an FDA approved mood stabilizer should work at a therapeutic dose. You can see if at a proper dose you can tolerate the akathesia.
1134609 tn?1269272200 However, a recent family even has gotten me wondering; would the Lamictal be a good enough mood stabilizer for me alone? My mother was on Celexa for depression and Topama for seizures, but was taken off of the Celexa because it was causing her problems. She's been free and clear of the Celexa for 3 months and is only on the Topamax and she hasn't had any issues since. In fact, she's the most stable she's been in a long time.
Avatar f tn Except for Lithium, which is highly effective but an old line medication that will cause weight gain and cognitive confusion and if taken over time a potential for kidney damage (has happenned to 5 people I know) all the mood stabilizers were other medications first, usually anti-convulsants, then used experimentally for mood stabilization.
585414 tn?1288941302 s going on with me are new to clinical understanding (that I keep to the journal entries). Thankfully mood stabilization is not one of them.
574118 tn?1305135284 People some time mean AC as MS yet they are meant usually for epileptic i.e. used for BP off-label (e.g lamictal). Whereas AP for schizophrenia mainly also for BP off-label so usually used for BP in psychosis. The only MS i know of in books is the lithium. So why people can't be more clear saying instead of you should use an MS just say you should consider lithium. Some articles (medical) say there is no agreement on the meaning of an MS.
Avatar f tn Hi, I have rapid cycling Bipolar 1. I was also born with an inactive thyroid gland. That has made everything worse....for example I cannot take any of the antipsychotic meds out there. They are 10x stronger for me because of my thyroid and meds I take for that. I am on lithium which is an "anti-manic" mood stabilizer. I am also on Lamictal which is an "anti-depressant" mood stabilizer. Mood stabilization is all I have to work with because of my other illnesses.
Avatar m tn I think depression is a sign saying we need to change something in our life, for me it was my health, so I take tons of different vitamins for mood stabilization and depression, and a long hard workout for sleep(and they work).
Avatar f tn There are still many options left as regards mood stabilizers. For example, Lamictal has less of a potential to cause weight gain and sedation although each person responds differently to each medication. This has some helpful information about known mood stabilizers and medications that are used off label for bipolar that you could discuss with your psychiatrist: http://www.medhelp.org/tags/health_page/34/Mental-Health/Useful-Bipolar--Depression-Webisites?
Avatar f tn There are many other mood stabilizers such as lithium, Depakoate and Lamictal and Lamictal generally has less of these side effects (for general information on mood disorders google "Depression Central"). However, if your psychiatrist believes you require an antipsychotic, Abilify is generally the most tolerated out of what is available now though if you read through my posts you will see in the coming years there may be more options that are easier to tolerate.
Avatar f tn ve been diagnoised with Bipolar Disorder I, as well as a number of other psychiatric disorders, but for mood stabilization I take 400 mg. of lamictal and 10 mg. of remeron daily. Additionally, I take 10 mg. of diazepam 4 times a day to control my anxiety and panic attacks. I find that seroquel, which is actually an anti-psychotic is notorious for weight gain. I gained 40 pounds while taking it, until I told my doctor to take me off of it.
Avatar f tn yes, i know risperdal works right away. I've taken it before. I'll probably ask at my next apt, as my psychiatrist isnt in a hurry to put me on it yet, she wants to see if the lamictal will work, but at a low dose like 50mg i dont see it happening.
Avatar n tn Is this likely a symptom of either the hypomanic episode or the lexapro use? Since, has switched back to low-dose Zoloft and low-dose Lamictal for mood stabilization, and is doing very well. Supposed "possible emergence of bi-polar disorder" has been re-diagnosed as drug-emergent hypomanic episode. Any insight appreciated. Thanks This discussion is related to IRBBB.
585414 tn?1288941302 Its use is not as a mood stabilizer but I know many mood stabilizers that are anti-convulsants (with the strong exception of Lamictal which was great but could not take it for other reasons) caused problems such as Tegretol/Trileptal causing psychosis in me and Keppra causing suicidal ideations in me (all this is not that unknown). I can monitor moodswings and its not much of a problem but when its caused by a medication its much harder.
Avatar n tn Abilify is an antipsychotic with mood stabilization effects. It is the antipsychotic least likely to cause weight gain. It can work added to any medication your psychiatrist thinks is appropriate. If you've had trouble tolerating Depakoate, Lamictal is another option which is less likely to cause weight gain and cognitive confusion. You could ask your psychiatrist about that.
142722 tn?1281533616 Seroquel is an antipsychotic with a mood stabilization effect. You would need to be on some kind of medication to keep things stable until you have the baby so if you can't tolerate Seroquel ask your psychiatrist what other medications might be safe. There are other antipsychotics that are FDA approved as mood stabilizers and other mood stabilizers but only your psychiatrist would know which ones are safe to take.
Avatar f tn Any recommendations for a good mood stablizer other than Lithium, Lamictal or Depakote, or are those the only mood stabilizers there are? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
574118 tn?1305135284 my pdoc said lithium is safe and the proof is that doctors started nowadays to ALLOW pregrancy with lithium but not with the other mood stabilizers. Suppose I prefer lamictal. is it void for sure and defdinitely from any side effects or it still has some (except the common nausea, drowziness, etc...) can someone provide me with a site containing views of patients who used it and suffered. finally does lithium HELPS in DEPRESSION or for mania mainly. i.e.
Avatar f tn It may affect you less but you need full mood stabilization not just control of depression to fully recover. As I said you might ask for a consult to a mood disorders specialist and then your psychiatrist could follow up on what was reccomended.
574118 tn?1305135284 Things like topiramate (brand Topamax) and oxcarbazepine (brand Trileptal) are off-label, but the anticonvulsants in general are known for mood stabilization properties (oxcarbazepine is very similar to carbemazepine, but with fewer side effects, and a lack of license might be a monetary thing, not a clinical one).
Avatar m tn ve posted with the medication I am on glycine in Phase II FDA study, which is a glutamate antagonist, a whole new class of antipsychotic in study if the results are the same as what was acheived in me the answer is yes. Now as for mood stabilizers, they develop new medications each year and many are found to have mood stabilization properties and then they are researched as mood stabilizers but a mood disorders specialist could use them now as they approved medications.
Avatar m tn She is on a decent medication regimen except as the psychiatrist is probably aware that for a person with bipolar Effexor or any anti-depressent (Wellbutrin is the least likely) can often worsen mania so you might want to talk to him about seeing if that might be worsening things.
750223 tn?1234384662 HELLO... mood stabilizer????? Lithium, depakote, lamictal... tegretol... You can't typically manage Bipolar with out a mood stabilizer... straight antidepressants do normally cause a Bipolar person to stay manic with out the mood stabilizer on board..... Haldol is an antipsychotic- ativan is for anxiety.....
