Lamictal and tegretol

Common Questions and Answers about Lamictal and tegretol

lamictal

2080404 tn?1643113754 My doctor just took me off Lithium and what I was taking to sleep- Trazadone- and switched me to Tegretol and Ambien. I have Bi polar type II and Borderline Personality Disorder with Ultradian cycles. I just joined this site while doing absent-minded research browsing on the two disorders and decided "why not?". Set up a profile and even trackers which is something else. But I can't help but find purely scientific facts about the medicines, has anyone been on them?
Avatar f tn I tried tegretol once for a month but gave me headaches that was the only MS i used before my today lamictal. In the USA they don't use it anymore because it's interactive with other drugs. Trileptal is its cousin though weaker and as IL said doesn't need blood test. Incidentally lamictal sometimes they mix it with depakote it says in its brochure. I wonder why he recommends tegretol. Is it he is suggesting any MS and that's all.
574118 tn?1305135284 besides tegretol-lithium-valporate (depakine) are mainly the 3 classical ones good for mania, lamictal is only from 2003 and widely spread in the USA. Tegretol users the older/safer school of pdocs like in egypt like it. I had headaches from it. it's cousin trileptal doesn't need blood tests but weaker. there is a good site which ILADVOCATE recommends depression central google it and everything is there.
Avatar f tn Hi, I would have to do some research on a lamictal tegretal study. I'm not sure whether lamictal is licensed in the UK, something else I shall have to look into.
1100992 tn?1262357216 I found Lamictal the most tolerable out of the 3 and it worked specifically on rapid cycling and mixed states and could not tolerate Tegretol, Trileptal and Depakoate because of personality changes (but that's a potential side effect of all anti-convulsants used as mood stabilizers including the one I take now) but each person responds differently to each medication although generally, side effect profile aside as it is the only medication approved as a mood stabilizer before any other usa
1134609 tn?1269272200 We would really like to get down to 2 medications; Lamictal for BP depression and the other for the mania side of things. And then possibly a benzo as a PRN. But, I have Ativan and Xanax XR in the cupboard and I have taken one of the Xanax and two Ativan over the space of 6 months; all while I was still taking the Celexa.
Avatar m tn t require bloodtests and is safer. Lamictal does not require regularly blood monitoring because when I was on it the blood test was yearly and more of a general check up. Lithium of course does. Each person reacts differently though but the site "Depression Central" could give you an overall understanding.
915369 tn?1355314810 Yes well I tried Neurontin which is the other name for it in combination with Lamictal (Neurontin is generally used as an adjunct medication regardless of what medication its used with) and I found that it made me too nervous and that can happen but each person responds differently to each medication.
Avatar f tn I think Geodon is for BP patients who have equal mania and depression or more on the manic side (as opposed to Lamictal which is used for greater depressive BP). Trileptal is very similar to Tegretol - in fact, I think they are the same molecule but varied somewhat. I've read a statement from a Psychiatrist that Tegretol is always more successful for them than Trileptal is. Go to Bipolarworld - the Dr. in charge of that wrote a abstract of his experience using Tegretol vs Trileptal for BP.
Avatar f tn but i would like to share this with you lamictal and trileptal do affect birth control pills and vise verse i.e. you can get pregnant using these as they reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills by 40%to 50% ,,,,,,,,,,also (which done me a great harm) the birth control pills reduce the effect of BP meds up to 50% also. i read on some site (but i cannot remember which) that birth control pills can affect most of psychiatric meds.
Avatar n tn One thing that should be noted is that the medication Trileptal is basically clinically the same as Tegretol but because of some specific variations it has a safer side effect profile and does not require regular blood tests so if your psychiatrist decides to use Tegretol it would be worthwhile to ask about that.
925572 tn?1246540031 my pdoc raised my lamictal to 200 mg and gave anther mood stabilizer.
Avatar f tn I have seen lithium and lamictal which to me makes more sense, but tegretol and lamictal say i find strange yet i saw it. This proves simply that drugs are trial and error and it takes sometimes months if not years to find a good combo. The proof is that if the same patient consults 2 pdocs he will find them writing different options.
477959 tn?1208204005 now I am still on a low dose of lamictal 75mg and am going to be raising the dose again in 2 weeks. My dr. told me that if lamictal doesnt work that lithium is my last resort. I really do NOT want to be on lithium. does anyone else know of some meds that might help. keep in mind that ssri's and snri's dont agree with me. sorry for rambling I am on one of my highs.
Avatar m tn Hi, I m desperately looking for help after seeing tons of neurologist and neuro surgeon about my daily chronic tension headache and tingling burning pain on my left side of body after a seizure last year due to a brain aneurysm. I m since on 400mg of tegretol cr daily and i suspected tegretol is the cause of my suffering. Any personal experience or advise to help ? All scans and test turn out fine.
452529 tn?1361847855 I saw a neurologist in 2004 and was put on carbatrol and taken off tegretol...well another seizure occurred. I stopped seeing that Dr. and went to a psych. with a background in neurology. He said my the tegretol was not carrying over until I took my night-time dose. So I was put on XR tegs. and prescribed klonipin for the jerks. Last month I was taken off 100mg of dilantin and I had a seizure on 3/30/08 and I asked to be put back on 400mg of dil, 800mg of teg, and 1500mg of depakote. The Dr.
959034 tn?1253671476 I am 22 years old and I was diagnosed with epilepsy since I was about 5 years old. They told my mom I had 6 days to live when I was born because I had a tumor on my brain. I had brain surgery when I was a baby. Since then I've had 5 brain surgeries my last one was when I was 11 years old. I had a seizure on the operating table and was paralyzed on my right side. So whenever I have a seizure I go paralyzed on my right side and it takes me about 3 minutes to talk again.
1967424 tn?1325633780 I have not personally taken tegretol. Have you tried lamictal? It works well for a lot of people and has one of the best side effect profiles of the mood stabilizers, and is good for depression (although they might want something else to keep mania in check). I'm on lamictal, and despite having had some wacky side effects, it's working well enough that it more than makes up for the annoying bits.
Avatar f tn I'm a 32 year old male and I've been suffering from grand mal and partial complex seizures for almost 20 years. I take Keppra and Lamictal, and thought I don't have any problems getting and keeping an erection, I find it almost impossible to ejaculate when I'm with my partner. Even when I masturbate, it takes a lot of time and concentration to achieve orgasm.
918275 tn?1254068752 i was recently put on abilify and tegretol and felt that my mood was better, as well, but no energy or life in me to even bathe! so, i took away the abilify and take just the tegretol and feel better. i suppose my answer about abilify is that it is not for me. i'd rather want to take baths, cook, etc. sounds crazy, but i'm sure u get my drift if u are on this forum. lol! was in the hospital and this dr. told me i have soft-bipolar and to never get on any antidepressants again.
2144876 tn?1341432818 but i cant stop crying and being angry and iam still having seizues, and started me on zoloft, and dont understand iam taking meds for epilepsy than Med for the said Effects ,cuz its making me Depresset? GOD..
735919 tn?1236444549 I was on Risperdal first for almost 15 yrs and developed granulomas ( nasty ringworm looking spots), and became prediabetic, then went on Geodon a for 1 expensive year and developed psuedo parkinsonism and had to quit it too.
501086 tn?1210123831 I would suggest you check out what your cap is and see if it is feasible for you to get these meds. I had to go off the Lamictal and remain on the Dilantin because of this and from the posts above wish I was able to try the Lamictal.
Avatar f tn yes app, keppra works well for both, i have just started this medication as i have been on sodium valporte and tegretol for many years, im slowly coming of the tegretol and going onto keppra, and if everything gos well they will then start to reduce the soduim valporte, i hope this has helped you in some way, if you like i can keep you informed of how things are going.
1039200 tn?1314912008 tegretol, valproex and lithium. These 3 drugs i claim they are better for mania and not depression because bipolars are supposedly dangerous people in early history. only when their illness is understood and the name manic-depressive is substituted by the more decent word bipolars and even more decent mood swings, they concluded that the bipolar pt must be cured from his depression too.
Avatar m tn How long have you had seizures? How long have you been taking lamictal?
Avatar m tn If it was being used as a mood stabilizer (not an antipsychotic) Lamictal and Tegretol are quite effective mood stabilizers. I personally found Lamictal to be more tolerable and more effective but each person reacts differently to each medication. Go to the welcome page and we have some websites linked up for informational purposes about mood stabilizers. Speak to your psychiatrist about all this.
