Lamictal vs tegretol

Common Questions and Answers about Lamictal vs tegretol

lamictal

Avatar f tn ve read a statement from a Psychiatrist that Tegretol is always more successful for them than Trileptal is. Go to Bipolarworld - the Dr. in charge of that wrote a abstract of his experience using Tegretol vs Trileptal for BP. But Tegretol usually has side effects. http://www.bipolarworld.org/bipolarworld/Medications/Mood%20Stabilizers/stabmeds_main.
Avatar f tn I tried tegretol once for a month but gave me headaches that was the only MS i used before my today lamictal. In the USA they don't use it anymore because it's interactive with other drugs. Trileptal is its cousin though weaker and as IL said doesn't need blood test. Incidentally lamictal sometimes they mix it with depakote it says in its brochure. I wonder why he recommends tegretol. Is it he is suggesting any MS and that's all.
Avatar f tn Hi, I would have to do some research on a lamictal tegretal study. I'm not sure whether lamictal is licensed in the UK, something else I shall have to look into.
Avatar f tn I've usually always take a mood stabilizer, ie. Lamictal & a anti psychotic, ie. Seroquel. I take them in combination or ill be extremely manic. I've tried depakote & the only issue was weight gain & slight hair loss. I haven't noticed many side effects w/ lamictal. I think combining lamictal w/ lithium is a good decision.
2080404 tn?1643113754 If your pdoc like to choose between the above 3 (lithium, tegretol, depakote) then I advise you to choose tegretol. Otherwise there is lamictal which possesses advantages like less weight gain and some antidepressant properties. If you need to be aware of some MS there is http://www.askdrjones.com/medication-best-meds/ranking-the-mood-stabilizers/ it will give some idea.
1100992 tn?1262357216 t make you put excessive weight or hair loss like depakote or the other known side effects like lithium BTW egyptian doctors write it all the time. In asking them why not topamax, lamictal etc..
1134609 tn?1269272200 I currently on Lamictal, Neurontin, and Klonopin. However, there has been discussion of weaning off of the latter medications and adding a mood stabilizer to the mix. However, I am very sensitive to medication; Seroquel kicked me into a manic episode. Given this fact, what are some of the effective mood stabilizers for mania? What are some of your experiences with said stabilizers?
915369 tn?1355314810 the one which starts with T is Topamax probably an AP but Tegretol is an AC . could be tegretol still because the canadians follow the British who prescribe it you are still young so no fear of interactivity of tegretol about gabapentin many say it's good . problem is that pdocs don't write it usually neurologists only.
Avatar f tn I've been taking Tegretol(Carbemazepine) since 1993 for SAD, I recently spoke to my dr about possible birth control. According to him neither the pill or injection were going to work with Tegretol, and for this reason I'm now on the coil.
Avatar n tn Tegretol is one of a variety of medications in potential use when lithium (which is the only medication specifically developed as a mood stabilizer) no longer is effective. This is some information on mood stabilizers in general including Tegretol: http://www.psycheducation.org/depression/meds/moodstabilizers.htm For some people it has an easier to tolerate side effect profile than lithium.
925572 tn?1246540031 my pdoc raised my lamictal to 200 mg and gave anther mood stabilizer.
959034 tn?1253671476 I am 22 years old and I was diagnosed with epilepsy since I was about 5 years old. They told my mom I had 6 days to live when I was born because I had a tumor on my brain. I had brain surgery when I was a baby. Since then I've had 5 brain surgeries my last one was when I was 11 years old. I had a seizure on the operating table and was paralyzed on my right side. So whenever I have a seizure I go paralyzed on my right side and it takes me about 3 minutes to talk again.
1967424 tn?1325633780 I have not personally taken tegretol. Have you tried lamictal? It works well for a lot of people and has one of the best side effect profiles of the mood stabilizers, and is good for depression (although they might want something else to keep mania in check). I'm on lamictal, and despite having had some wacky side effects, it's working well enough that it more than makes up for the annoying bits.
918275 tn?1254068752 ask him if he can consider lamictal. Those are the only 2 meds i know of suitable for depression except the AD which is usually harmful to BP as they worsen mania and bring a lot of complications.
Avatar m tn I found Lamictal the most tolerable. Lithium was highly effective of course but I had some trouble tolerating it because of cognitive confusion and weight gain but its the most effective mood stabilizer in general. As for Tegretol (the clinical name of what the other medication was) I tend to be concerned about that one because it made me psychotic and it can often lower the blood level of an antipsychotic in people, which is the reason why. However, some people find it effective.
Avatar n tn Hi I am new here. I saw your post regarding bipolars need never be on antidepressants alone because they cause mania. Do you think that is true of all anti depressants, or just a few? I am always finding myself paranoid when I start thinking about my diagnosis. When I was on effexor alone, I became suicidal (never before), cut myself(never before) did sexually provocative things( my husband loved that) and as an artist, became more creative. Was this just effexor....
735919 tn?1236444549 thank you for the info on Lamictal, but does anyone take Geodon? I take 40mg Geodon and Lamictal. I do feel so much better, but i was wondering more about the Geodon side effects. I feel alittle more anixous im wondering if it is the Geodon.
501086 tn?1210123831 and now Lamictal, for the past two years. Of all the many meds I have taken, Lamictal has produced the least side effects. No sleepiness, no weight gain, ( that I can attribute to my meds anyway..ahem) and no englargement of the gums. In short I would say from my personal experience it's the best anti-seizure med out there. I only take 200mg a day, so it may be different for others who take a higher or lower dosage. Hope this gave a little insight.
Avatar f tn yes app, keppra works well for both, i have just started this medication as i have been on sodium valporte and tegretol for many years, im slowly coming of the tegretol and going onto keppra, and if everything gos well they will then start to reduce the soduim valporte, i hope this has helped you in some way, if you like i can keep you informed of how things are going.
Avatar f tn //bipolar.about.com/b/2009/04/13/fda-orders-suicidal-ideation-warning-on-many-mood-stabilizers.htm?nl=1 The drugs which must now carry this warning are: Depakote (divalproex sodium) Gabitril (tiagabine) Keppra (levetiracetam) Lamictal (lamotrigine) Neurontin (gabapentin) Tegretol (carbamazepine) Topamax (topiramate) Trileptal (oxcarbazepine I would agree with the statement that the risk is greater left untreated than with them. My suicidal ideations are MUCH less being treated vs.
477959 tn?1208204005 now I am still on a low dose of lamictal 75mg and am going to be raising the dose again in 2 weeks. My dr. told me that if lamictal doesnt work that lithium is my last resort. I really do NOT want to be on lithium. does anyone else know of some meds that might help. keep in mind that ssri's and snri's dont agree with me. sorry for rambling I am on one of my highs.
Avatar m tn lamictal has side effects that are very scary, so the Doctors have to start you on a low dose, because it can cause a deadly rash. my son took zonisimade and it didn't do anything for his Seizures.Every person is different . it takes time to see what will work for every person. still have not found the right medicines to stop my son Seizures.
Avatar f tn I am BP and I try to convince my pdoc to try lamictal. He put me on tegretol instead which I couldn't bare. I read good things about lamictal. Why pdocs prefer AC as MS because more effective and longlasting than AP. Although I am on seroquel which is OK, I believe the best 2 meds invented so far though not tried neither is lamotrigine (lamictal) and abilify.
Avatar f tn And, do I have just depression/anxiety, or do I have a mood disorder?! Just for the record I do take 100mg of Lamictal, which doesn’t really do anything but I’m also on a low dose of it. I just don’t want to get off of it because it takes too long to titrate up on it. Please help me with your feedback. Please don’t tell me to discuss this with my doctor. I already know that and already have discussed it with him (both of them) and have two different opinions.
Avatar f tn True in the brochure of lamictal it says it mixes well with depakote but I never understood why. Depakote, lithium, tegretol are good for mania whereas lamictal is good for depression, so why combining both. Perhaps he is just combining as much as he can mood stabilizers. You will find unfortunately pdocs combining all sorts of drugs. I have seen lithium and lamictal which to me makes more sense, but tegretol and lamictal say i find strange yet i saw it.
Avatar m tn If it was being used as a mood stabilizer (not an antipsychotic) Lamictal and Tegretol are quite effective mood stabilizers. I personally found Lamictal to be more tolerable and more effective but each person reacts differently to each medication. Go to the welcome page and we have some websites linked up for informational purposes about mood stabilizers. Speak to your psychiatrist about all this.
