1524655 tn?1291420532 The pain has gotten less indeed. However, after reading articles about articular cartilage, I understand that articular cartilage has limited ability for healing, escpecially if its not all the way to the bone (Grade 4). Although the surgeon said "no surgery needed", I still don't undertand how things would get better... How could my grade 2 defect possibly heal, since it is not all the way to the bone?
Avatar f tn A meniscal tear that goes untreated is like sandpaper in your knee and will rub on the articular cartilage and cause damage and can lead to arthritis or an exacerbation of any current arthritis. Good luck!
Avatar n tn I have a question...I fell from a couple of a stairs and tore my lateral meniscus. The orthopedic told me that I have to get surgery because that portion of the tear is not healed. Also he mentioned that the cartilage in my knee is calcifying. So I want to know is the calclifying of my cartilage in my knee a long term risk for my knee?..And if I don't want to do surgery to take out the torn pieces..is it possible that my knee can still heal on its own?
Avatar f tn History-Last march I injured my right knee playing lacrosse, I am 13 years old.I was sprinting and pivoted on my knee and heard and felt a pop. There was some swelling after the initial injury. I saw an orthopedic surgeon and was told it was either a possible tear in my acl, strain, or cartilage damage. The MRI came back negative. I decided to just play through the pain because it wasnt unbearable and the season was almost over. I went to lacrosse camp and it really started bothering me.
Avatar f tn I am a veteran when it comes to knee problems. Torn meniscus cartilage, 2 knee scopes (arthroscopic surgeries), and finally a total knee replacement. If your knee is swelling, especially in the morning after sleeping, it may be a torn meniscus cartilage. The older we get, the more brittle our cartilage becomes and the more prone it is to damage from impact, etc... I have had lots of injuries over the years but the knee had the worst pain of all.
Avatar n tn I am a 53 yr old female, who danced & taught Ballet for 36 yrs, now retired. I also have MS & RA. 15 yrs ago, I had arthroscopic surgery on my left knee for torn cartilage; I've never had any problems w/ that knee since. Until several months ago.
159619 tn?1707018272 I could walk fine before the surgery. Now I have a limp and am in constant pain, not only the knee, but my other knee, back and hip from compensation. DO NOT GET THIS SURGERY!!
1247571 tn?1296572214 I am 20 years old, 5'10 and 130 lbs. Healthy and have dislocated my left knee six times. The knee is not reliable and i have to be constantly worried about it. What is wrong with it? How do i fix or strengthen it? Please reply/ help soon. Thank you.
Avatar f tn What exactly is a bruised meniscus and how long does it take to heal? I injured it 9 1/2 weeks ago and just had an MRI yesterday.
Avatar m tn Now, as for the knee I would assume they are taking the bone and cartilage from an area that can regenerate because cartilage does not heal itself due to poor vascular supply. However, there is one area of cartilage in the knee that is more likely to repair itself. You will probably have to go through physical therapy for both the knee AND the elbow which is one of the reasons they think it will take so long.
Avatar n tn What is the recovery period after knee surgery for full thickness articular cartilage defect
Avatar f tn Here are the results of my boyfriend's knee x-ray and MRI. Should this heal on its own or will he need surgery? Previous findings with xray: Minimal narrowing of the medial tibiofemoral and patellofemoral joint spaces on left side. MRI findings: Complex, unstable tear of the medial meniscus body and posterior horn. High grade ACL tear through the mid-proximal fibers.
Avatar m tn A pain that goes away when you rest, but comes back when you start dancing and jumping again sounds like injury to cartilage or an intervertebral disc, which do not heal quickly or without treatment. Yes, please see a doctor for a diagnosis and treatment.
Avatar m tn is the left knee, and a recent accident disclosed a torn cartilage and arthritis in the left knee (and some swelling behind the knee.....no pain, just swollen). One injection of Cartisone and 1 weekly injection of Hyaluronic Acid for 3 weeks brought some relief, but very little. I read about Castor Oil Packs and within 1 hour, I eliminated the swelling (had been swollen for almost 4 months) and daily treatments of COP has eliminated 95% of all discomfort....
Avatar m tn Because of this, there is an increased risk of developing damage to the articular cartilage surface of the knee joint bones; this is commonly referred to as knee arthritis. Loss of the meniscus places more of a burden on the cartilage surfaces of the joint and are more likely to develop knee arthritis. So your ortho surgeon may have done an excellent job. You may have developed additional issues with the knee. I am not a physician this is only a suggestion, ice and rest may help.
378273 tn?1262097621 I sustained a knee injury 3 months ago. MRI showed Baker's Cyst with debris, subchondral fracture, torn meniscus partially stripped MCL, joint effusion and near-complete cartilate denudation in the lateral patellofemaral joint. Got a cortisone shot, which only helped a little.Ortho doctor called the fracture a bone bruise and said they take months to heal. The torn meniscus won't heal (he said) Other than a "scope" what can I do to get relief!
Avatar m tn There is evidence of a cartilaginous defect involving the hyaline articular cartilage of the lateral femoral condyle measuring approximately 6mm. A small cartilaginous loose body within the joint cannot be excluded. A small cartilaginous irregularity is also involving the articular surface of the medial femoral condyle. There is also minimal joint effusion. There is irregularity of the hyaline articular cartilage of the patella.
Avatar f tn I used to play a lot of soccer and have not in years, but I remember having knee and ankle pain quite often, enough so that I frequently wore knee braces and wrapped both ankles. I now play golf, and after playing one day I noticed some knee pain. There was no specific incident or sudden onset of pain - it just gradually appeared. I also started hearing more popping noises than usual, but now it hurt and I felt movement.
Avatar n tn The reason the arthroscopy was done is due to knee pain as a result of meniscus tear n torn cartilage. My doctor is not at our town. I have to fly in to another town to do the arthroscopy. I did call my doctor & was advise that this is normal after the incision. Well, I now can walk around but slow. My knees seem not able to support me even normal daily thing like going to toilet. I need some support in order to sit down or stand up. Just wonder if it is normal.
Avatar n tn A study shows that you can regrow knee cartilage. The technique used in this study spurs knee cartilage to grow back, which could cut pain and improve knee function, wrote Kevin Stone, MD, and colleagues. Stone's study appears in The Journal of Arthroscopic and Related Surgery.
Avatar n tn I have bad arthritis in my knee. My ortho doc (after MRI) says I tore the meniscus but he thinks arthroscopy is a waste of my time and money since I have such thin cartilage. He took all the fluid out and injected me with cortisone earlier today. The pain is unbearable and the swelling is coming back already. Has anyone had torn meniscus with advanced arthritis and had sucess with arthroscopy. He says I am not ready yet for knee replacement.
Avatar n tn A preexisting condition called as chondromalacia predisposes individuals to wear and tear of the cartilage under the knee cap. The pattern of cartilage damage seen with chondromalacia is distinct from the degeneration seen in arthritis, and the damage from chondromalacia is thought to be capable of repair, unlike that seen with arthritis. Treatment is by resting the knee and adhering to a proper physical therapy program.
