I have a question...I fell from a couple of a stairs and tore my lateral meniscus. The orthopedic told me that I have to get surgery because that portion of the tear is not healed. Also he mentioned that the cartilage in my knee is calcifying. So I want to know is the calclifying of my cartilage in my knee a long term risk for my knee?..And if I don't want to do surgery to take out the torn pieces..is it possible that my knee can still heal on its own?
History-Last march I injured my right knee playing lacrosse, I am 13 years old.I was sprinting and pivoted on my knee and heard and felt a pop. There was some swelling after the initial injury. I saw an orthopedic surgeon and was told it was either a possible tear in my acl, strain, or cartilage damage. The MRI came back negative. I decided to just play through the pain because it wasnt unbearable and the season was almost over. I went to lacrosse camp and it really started bothering me.
I am a veteran when it comes to knee problems. Torn meniscus cartilage, 2 knee scopes (arthroscopic surgeries), and finally a total knee replacement. If your knee is swelling, especially in the morning after sleeping, it may be a torn meniscus cartilage. The older we get, the more brittle our cartilage becomes and the more prone it is to damage from impact, etc... I have had lots of injuries over the years but the knee had the worst pain of all.
I am a 53 yr old female, who danced & taught Ballet for 36 yrs, now retired. I also have MS & RA. 15 yrs ago, I had arthroscopic surgery on my left knee for torn cartilage; I've never had any problems w/ that knee since. Until several months ago.
What exactly is a bruised meniscus and how long does it take to heal? I injured it 9 1/2 weeks ago and just had an MRI yesterday.
Now, as for the knee I would assume they are taking the bone and cartilage from an area that can regenerate because cartilage does not heal itself due to poor vascular supply. However, there is one area of cartilage in the knee that is more likely to repair itself. You will probably have to go through physical therapy for both the knee AND the elbow which is one of the reasons they think it will take so long.

Here are the results of my boyfriend's knee x-ray and MRI. Should this heal on its own or will he need surgery?
Previous findings with xray: Minimal narrowing of the medial tibiofemoral and patellofemoral joint spaces on left side.
MRI findings: Complex, unstable tear of the medial meniscus body and posterior horn. High grade ACL tear through the mid-proximal fibers.

There is evidence of a cartilaginous defect involving the hyaline articular cartilage of the lateral femoral condyle measuring approximately 6mm. A small cartilaginous loose body within the joint cannot be excluded. A small cartilaginous irregularity is also involving the articular surface of the medial femoral condyle. There is also minimal joint effusion.

He took all the fluid out and injected me with cortisone earlier today. The pain is unbearable and the swelling is coming back already. Has anyone had torn meniscus with advanced arthritis and had sucess with arthroscopy. He says I am not ready yet for knee replacement.
A preexisting condition called as chondromalacia predisposes individuals to wear and tear of the cartilage under the knee cap. The pattern of cartilage damage seen with chondromalacia is distinct from the degeneration seen in arthritis, and the damage from chondromalacia is thought to be capable of repair, unlike that seen with arthritis.
Treatment is by resting the knee and adhering to a proper physical therapy program.
