Avatar f tn I agree with Sandman, and found this website on the possible side effects of the ketogenic diet. It is apparently not to be used in the long term, as it doesn't provide adequate nutrition for a growing child. Side effects include hyperactivity, irritability and constipation (which as Sandman noted can result in encopresis, involuntarily soiling). I'm also interested in your statement "she's just like me".
Avatar n tn May I suggest you do some research on the Ketogenic Diet. It is a huge lifestyle change, but is totally worth it. Ketogenic lifestyle requires that you cut out almost all carbs. You eat less than 20g of carbs a day, moderate amount of protein 50-100g/day (60-75 is ideal for most people), and 100-150g fat/day. It is a high fat diet that switches your body from using carbs for energy to using fat for energy.

Tbd Many chose a new way of eating (WOE), LCHF (Low Carb High Fat). as diabetics it is carbs that raise BG, eating low carb works well for controlling BG. The "eat low fat" mantra is based on BAD science. even the US CDC says cholesterol in the diet is not a concern. Also when carbs are removed from the diet then some other form of energy is needed... fat. I eat under 50 gr of carbs a day and have been since 2000.
10094372 tn?1407761844 I’ve now gone four months without medication and no seizures. My diet is a 80/15/5 (fat/protein/carbs) ratio diet, and it works very well for me. My ketones are showing “green” in the mornings and “yellow” in the afternoon, using the Ketonix. When it shows “blue” it’s time to fast, exercise or have more fat! Now it is really easy to adjust the ketone level by just a simple exhale into the device. No disposable strips, no extra cost!
Avatar m tn Sorry about your son. There is a movie you might want to watch concerning epilepsy. The movie is "First Do No Harm". It is a true story concerning the use of the Ketogenic Diet with good results in treating epilepsy in children. Sure wish you the best with your son.
Avatar n tn Hi, You are already doing the lifestyle measures to manage diabetes with low carb eating and exercise. If you want to step it up a notch diet-wise, you could look into ketogenic diet, which can further normalize blood sugars for some. Changing your exercise time (maybe late afternoon / evening, if you typically exercise in the morning) may be worth a try. Other possibilities: - a small late night snack (with protein and fat) may help bring down your fasting numbers; this works for some.
Tbd key words will be low-carb, and keto. If you do look into ketogenic diet, do not use it as an excuse to eat too much fat; if you want to lose weight fat has to be limited to fats that come naturally with the foods that you eat, rather than lots of extra fats being added. There are now many cases where this has happened (you can look up Virta Health a company that tries to guide patients to do this), and there are also many online supportive communities.
