Jaw pain after root canal procedure

Common Questions and Answers about Jaw pain after root canal procedure

jaw-pain

Avatar f tn t think I needed a root canal at this point but that during the dental procedure, the ligaments in my jaw were pulled (it was a long procedure, I have a very small mouth and she did a lot of jerking on my jaw) which changed my bite. He filed a tiny bit on the back molar and took the pressure off those teeth, which immediately made a big difference. Now, however, the area where the pressure was shifted to has started to ache off and on.
Avatar m tn Hi. Had a root canal done 2 days ago. During the procedure the endodontist uses a device as you know that measures the length of the canal and beeps at him when he finds the end of the canal... Well, it didnt beep or find one of them. He tried using all these different sized toothpick needles (the ones used to clean out the canals) and he still couldnt find it. He was having what seemed to be complications. Apparently the roots were super curvy and curved in different directions.
1307768 tn?1273363703 You may just be experiencing some post-operative pain from the root canal procedure. Did you have an abscess or anything prior to the root canal? I would call your doctor to let them know but I think over the counter pain medication along with some time should resolve the problem. They might want to put you on antibiotics just in case.
Avatar f tn I'm so sorry, honey. We are in the same boat. I had my 1st appt last Friday - the tissue around my root canal is so swollen that they couldn't finish it. I'm on amoxillin + lodine + tylenol (all max dosage) for 4 days now, and it's been hurting like hell. Before I went to see the dentist, it was only one tooth that's hurting. Now my whole gum + jaw bone hurts.
Avatar n tn I've had a root canal and the pain from that procedure has subsided. However, since the surgery I have had pain in my lower jaw, when I swallow, and it is painfull to open my mouth while attempting to eat. This pain hasn't gotten better or worse. It is subdued with a steady dose of Advil every 8 hours I have been to the doctors, and precribed anitbiotics, and after 3 days nothing seems to be working. Not even a slight improvment in my pain. Should I be concerned.
Avatar n tn t be that much severe pain after a root canal. Consultation with a specialist should hopefully find the problem and fix your situation.
Avatar f tn After the procedure, I continued having pain and ended up having to have a root canal. One month later, I was back in the office with severe pain. After many visits with no resolution. My jaw swelled up and I had to have the tooth removed. This required me to get a bridge. The tooth for the back part of the bridge had a crown on it with a previous root canal from about 10 years ago. I had never had any problems with this tooth.
Avatar n tn I do know that when he was doing the root canal that my jaw would pop everytime I would close my mouth. The other pain (other than the root area) seems to be located in my jaw joint and radiates to my head, ear, and neck on the left side. I don't know what else to do.
Avatar n tn Then had root canal done, stopped my antibiotics for a couple days after the root canal because the pain went away. Now I have a dull ache in my jawbone and my ear that comes and goes. It doesn't hurt, I just feel something there. I know I don't have an infection. Is it safe to put the crown on now?
Avatar n tn I had the same symptoms after my root canal. I was in SEVER pain. I was given a pain reliever and was told to put a heating pad on my jaw joint. The pain was unbearable. I missed three days of work, but the pain finally subsided.
Avatar m tn Thankyou for your reply. No i havn't, what's the post root canal treatment? I thought the RCT procedure removed all of the nerve?
Avatar f tn Had root canal last Thurs and by Sat I was in extreme pain and with swelling to lower jaw & lump on inside of cheek & gums. I was given Amox. I have been taking Amox for 3 days & NSAID. Get HA, tired/dizzy off/on. Endodontist saw me today told me the lump was actually bone swelling not soft tissue but not to worry. Has anyone heard about this condition? Is it due to too much injected anesthesia or is it an immune response or the infection? Please advise thank you.
Avatar n tn This can inflame tiny nerve fibers that SURROUND the root of the tooth, causing pain. The root canal procedure removes the nerves from inside the tooth, but the fibers surrounding it remain (called the periodontal ligament) and can elicit pain, especially to pressure. In the absence of thermal sensitivity, you can rest pretty well knowing the nerves inside the tooth are gone. This narrows the focus for finding the source of your discomfort considerably.
Avatar f tn s not unusual for your tooth to be sensitive after a root canal. HJowever, yo may passes through pain depending on complexity of the procedure, condition of the tooth prior to the root canal - was there a possible fracture or presence of infection? Since, you are experiencing discomfort that resembles a toothache, then the temporary filling maybe too high. Check with your oral surgeon, as in successful filling , the sensitivity subsided in about 7-10 days.
Avatar n tn I had a root canal done almost a month back and at that time there was pain but not too bad and within a week the pain was gone. But now after almost a month the entire jaw where the root canal was done is hurting and it seems to be accompanied with some pain in the temple on that side of the head and pain in the ear too. So I was wondering is this is normal? Another question that I had was how long can I go before I I absolutely need to cap the tooth with a crown?
Avatar n tn I had pain radiating back to my jaw, and a headache. This all came about AFTER the root canal, because I had been feeling pretty good. I'm on my second round of antibiotics, and my dentist tried to tell me my pain was coming from the adjacent tooth, which also had a filling that had fallen out. I went to an endodontist for a second opinion.
Avatar m tn It got to a point where I would get fevers and headaches and some jaw pain. After the root canal I noticed those symptoms still. It went away after about 1.5 months. I guess maybe your husband's brain is still creating those symptoms and it could be his sub-conscious mind. It could also be something else but this is definitely a possibility. Hope he gets well soon.
Avatar n tn The dentist said he found that on one root of the tooth, it was thin and the filler material from the root canal was touching my gum through this roo because the tooth root was so thin is was actually broken through. He said he put some "material" to cover this exposed area and we will just have to wait and see if it works. I now have stiches in my mouth along the jawline under the tooth. My jaw is very swollen and painful.
Avatar m tn In terms of your trigeminal neuralgia, I don't think either procedure should complicate your condition at this point. It depends on the prognosis of the root canal and whether or not they think it'll hold up after the root canal is done versus removing the tooth and not having to worry about the longevity of the tooth anymore.
Avatar m tn I am in sooo much pain I can die. 3 days ago I was suppose to finish a root canal procedure my tooth is infected, I asked the dentist to numb me due to severe pain the first time it was done. When she did she inserted the needle into the top of my jaw, my tooth is on the back bottom left side of my jaw. Through out the whole dental procedure i didn't get numb and to my surprise it didn't hurt.
Avatar f tn That did not help and was switched to amoxicillin, followed by a root canal. The root canal was a week ago but the lump from the abscess is still on my gum. Is this normal? I was not put on antibiotics after the root canal but I took the last 2 amox. From the prescrip I had been given the week before.
Avatar n tn m having these symptoms after my root canal. The pain is not continuous in the root canal tooth but comes and goes. The heavy feeling in my head is continuous. I called my endodontist back and asked what numbing agent was used (mepivacaine 1.8cc 3%, bupivacaine 1.8 cc 0.5%, reinjected a 2nd time because I wasn't feeling numb enough with lidacaine l:100) Now my question becomes could these anesthetics be causing my problems. The side effects are similar to what I've experienced.
Avatar n tn The pain is still mainly in my jaw but I have noticed that hot/cold causes the pain in my jaw to intensify so I am not sure if the pain in my jaw is just pain radiating from my tooth. Any thoughts on if it is just a pulpitis situation and may calm down without further work being done? Thank you.
Avatar n tn If indeed it is being irrigated, your root canal procedure is not finished. you need somehow to see a root canal specialist. if you cannot find one, go to the US.
Avatar n tn before allowing any root canal procedure, get an opinion from a good root canal speciaolist. you may also have a simple pulpitis--which seens to be getting better on its own.
Avatar f tn After having a root canal in December '08 to prepare two back molars for crowns I lost my job and all my health insurance. The last molar has now split completely down the middle leaving two craggy and sharp halfs with a hole in the center. I cannot get into a dentist for at least 6-8 months, just finding work is difficult enough. My concern is since the root and temporary filling is gone what are the dangers to my health, any symptoms I should look out for?
